M. Jalbert: Not a valid reason

The constant paranoia from the NRA and its members with their constant fear that their guns (toys, hardly) are going to be taken from them just constantly makes me crazy.

All I have heard is talk about trying to be more responsible regarding gun ownership and which guns should or shouldn’t be allowed.

To me, there is absolutely no need for any citizen to own any weapon with automatic or rapid fire capability, or 30-plus round magazines. I do not see any other reason for an individual citizen having such. Firepower needs should be the business of law enforcement officials and the military.

I believe most rank and file members want weapons for the purpose of personal enjoyment, such as target practice, competitive marksmanship contests, hunting game and, as some claim, for protection.

Unfortunately, we live in a big world with a lot of people with a lot of ideas and some will act on their ideas, good or bad.

I don’t see trying to control the weapons I have mentioned as a bad idea, but I am sure there are some who won't agree simply because they want what they want. It isn’t about need, it is about ownership.

To me, that is not a valid reason.

Marc A.J. Jalbert, Lewiston

I believe it's called a free society.

"It isn't about need, it is about ownership. To me, that is not a valid reason."
To me, it is fortunate that Mr. Jalbert doesn't get to make that call.

“To me, there is absolutely

“To me, there is absolutely no need for any citizen to own any weapon with automatic ...”
From the word go, you are displaying your ignorance about guns. Tomorrow I would like to you to visit your local sporting goods store and ask to purchase an automatic weapon. Please post back here and let the reader’s know what type of response you get.

“I do not see any other reason for an individual citizen having such. Firepower needs should be the business of law enforcement officials and the military.”

Then you lack imagination.

Adolf Hitler – Promoted Gun Control
Joseph Stalin – Promoted Gun Control
Menito Mussolini – Promoted Gun Control
Mao Tze Tung – Promoted Gun Control
Pol Pot – Promoted Gun Control
Fedel Castro – Promoted Gun Contol
Hugo Chaves – Promotes Gun Control
Karl Marx – Promoted Gun Control

Perhaps history would be a bit different if the citizens could have stopped these tyrants from killing millions of people. Now before you respond and say that cannot happen here in the U.S., just consider those were the same words crossing the lips of the populous the aforementioned individuals murdered.

In closing, I say you have a lack of knowledge of history. Please Google the individuals that I have cited above and learn how they came to power, how they murdered their own citizens for lust, power, and money.

So his obvious point...

...is negated by a technicality. I didn't realize abhorrence to 20 children being slaughtered, one with 11 bullet holes, doesn't count if you don't get the nomenclature right. Any port in a storm, right? PS: Adolf Hitler – Promoted Gun Control - this is a myth. Gun control in Germany was passed in 1920, long before hitler. I believe this mistake negates your entire letter.

OK.

Let's say it's true. And wikipedia has a general statement that says ANY entry may be challenged. How is it relevant to what's going on today? What you're saying is just a smoke screen - making excuses because you have NO REAL ARGUMENT to prevent restrictions on assault weapons and extended magazines. That's all. No other weapons. I hope you get a 285 pound buck with 10 or more points. I hope you put 10 in the black. If you're using an assault weapon with an extended magazine to get your deer, there IS a problem with that. If you're using an assault weapon with an extended magazine at the gun club, you're not putting 10 in the black, you're eliminating the target. I bet THAT'S fun and it does reveal a lot about your marksmanship or lack thereof. Assault weapons are NOT game rifles. Assault weapons are NOT for target shooting. They are people killing rifles. They were designed and built to kill people. For our troops overseas, I'm really, really glad they have them. Why have these wing nuts in the last few years ALL chosen to use an assault rifle? Because it kills a lot of people quickly. Even six and seven year old kids. It can put eleven bullet holes in a six year old body in the blink of an eye. I don't understand what you're so paranoid about.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

First, what is an assault

First, what is an assault rifle in your mind? I can have a semi-automatic that looks like a bolt action rifle and a semi-automatic rifle that is what we call an AR-15. They are both capable of holding 30 round clips. Just by looks, one would be an assault rifle and one will not even though both are just as deadly.

Second, I don’t hunt. I shot my first and last deer at age 19. Killing just didn’t feel right. That said, I do participate in competitive shoot that use rapid-fire weapons. Many of the local law enforcement also participate. The weapon of choice is the AR-15.

Third, the majority of the approximately 32,000 gun deaths each year involve a hand gun according to the CDC, especially for deaths of individuals under the age of 19 years old. Any ban on assault weapons, if you can defined that term, will not save very many lives. The legislative focus is misplaced. Why, well continually demonstrate why – emotion.

Lastly, note that the 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting. It has everything to do with allowing the people the means to repel an out of control government. If the Jewish people of Nazi Germany had weapons, perhaps they would have not sacrificed 6 Million people; a much bigger value than 20.

I’m waiting for you to define assault weapon for me, if you are up to it that is.

I am.

Assault weapons area high velocity, semi-automatic rifles with features designed for military combat situations Good enough for you?

MARK GRAVEL's picture

So the Remington 700 bolt

So the Remington 700 bolt action rifle fits this description. This gun has high-velocity projectiles, and it is use in military combat situations as a sniper rifle. Your definition is too broad in my opinion. Moreover, I encourage people to join me and ignore what new laws come out of Washington.

RONALD RIML's picture

Bolt-action is 'Semi-Automatic?'

Hey Gravel

It's going to be hard to ignore the bunch of executive orders Obama just signed as LAW! Support all you want.
Oh , by the way, that Rem. 700 does not fit the assault weapon criteria as it's not a semi-automatic and it would have been impossible for that nut to fire over 60 rounds in 10 minutes with such a gun. My definition stands.

RONALD RIML's picture

Per minute.....not ten.

A good marksman with proper training ad a decent weapon can get off a respectable rate of fire with a bolt-action - but nothing comparable to a semi-automatic.

Mark no doubt hates this, but as a state-certified police firearms instructor, I consistently shot master class with a wheel-gun.

AL PELLETIER's picture

Crickets?

Yup, crickets.

Why?

What will that accomplish? After reading what I've written, you really don't know what I'm talking about? I think you're smarter than that. At least, I hope you are. I think you're avoiding the subject again. Or are you looking for another excuse where you can give another "Na na na na na na" reply.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

It is really simple. If you

It is really simple. If you want to ban assault weapons, the law must define what an assault weapon looks like, behaves like, ..., etc.

My question was asking you to define for the readers what an assault weapon is or is not. My question was clear.

If the assault weapon it the instrument of a law, it is very relevant that you define said instrument.

It is like making a law against speeding and not defining how one measures if one is speeding or not.

 's picture

It's not up to me to do that.

It's up to the lawmakers. You beating the wrong dog. Admit it. All you are looking for in my replies is a technicality so you can dismiss out of hand anything I might say. Nice try. What this all really tells me is that you have no argument to deny restrictions on machines designed to shoot a lot of bullets in the shortest amount of time to kill as many people as possible.

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

What it tells the rest of us

What it tells the rest of us is that you don't have a clue as to what an assault weapon is, but you want to ban them. And before you go and get all puffy; I don't either.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

It is called asking your

It is called asking your opinion. That said, I think I got your very elementary response - "[guns that] shoot a lot of bullets in the shortest amount of time"

Supprisingly you did not say guns that go bang bang bang.

All I can say to that is...

Detroit Red Wings goalie and former University of Maine All-American Jimmy Howard admitted that the National Hockey League lockout was stressful.

“It was mentally draining. It was a mental roller-coaster the whole way through. There would be a proposal and you’d get your hopes up and then the rug would be pulled out from under you,” said Howard, who lives in Dedham in the offseason with wife, Rachel, and son, James Russell Howard IV.

Now that the lockout is over, Howard can’t wait to get back to work.

The teams could begin practicing as early as this weekend and open the season the following weekend. There won’t be any preseason games.
