WINSLOW (AP) — A Maine deli owner has changed the name of a sandwich named for actress Jane Fonda after receiving complaints from Vietnam veterans.
Gerry Michaud has served up sandwiches with creative names for more than 20 years at his Big G's Deli in Winslow, including one low-calorie version named after the fitness-conscious actress and activist.
But he's renamed the sandwich after hearing an earful from Vietnam veterans who were upset that Fonda was being celebrated between two slices of bread.
Vietnam veteran John Mullett, of Randolph, told the Morning Sentinel that veterans hold Fonda in "disdain" for her war protests and a photograph of her sitting on a Viet Cong anti-aircraft gun.
Michaud's now renamed the sandwich the "41,470," in honor of the number of U.S. combat deaths in Vietnam.

I had family in this conflict. Dont know how old you are but pictures and European press dont lie.. Check online back in that time and see just what happen . The men and women came home to be disgraced and treated like nothing. It took many years before they were acknowledged as heroes. My brother died from agent orange it took years for the government to accept this for vets and 1 yr after he passed the VA offered settlement. SO yeah to Big G's for respecting these HEROES.

At least she didn't drop napalm on defenseless civilians and children. She didn't drop Agent Orange that is still poisoning the environment and causing birth defects and cancer. And she didn't lay land mines that still maim and kill.

It's called the Joanne Moore Sandwich! The main ingredient is baloney.
Fonda's appearing in North Vietnam and trumpeting her opposition to American policy revved up the Viet Cong and cost many American lives. I have dog turds on my lawn don't deserve to be Fonda Turds.
I guess you would have been one of those who spit on me when I came home. Fellow Vietnam Vets, they still exist.

This is why:
On March 16, 1968, the American combat soldiers of Charlie Company, First Battalion, 20th Infantry Division swept into the South Vietnamese village of My Lai and massacred 504 unarmed, unresisting women,childre and elderly men. Babies were shot at point-blank range. Women and girls were gang-raped. Boys sodomised. Over 100 of the civilians were herded into an irrigation ditch and mowed down with automatic weapons. Villagers attempting to surrender were tortured, clubbed with rifle butts and stabbed with bayonets. Some were mutilated with the death signature "C Company" carved into the chest.
Four hours later, the entire village was burned to the ground and the corpses of its former residents were strewn elsewhere. Remember, these were the people Americans were sent there to defend. This was no ordinary search and destroy mission. This was a cold-blooded murder spree, later described by a member of Charlie Company as a Nazi-like thing.
But while the Nazi war criminals were tried and executed for similar crimes, the American army and government tried to cover up what came to be known as the My Lai Massacre - the most brutal and notorious U.S. military atrocity of the Vietnam War.
I would bet that the actions of these soldiers fueled the "enemy" with revenge much more than some Hollywood babe plunking her arse on a cannon in a misguided attempt at a photoshoot. And I would bet that she sleeps better at night than any survivors of Charlie Company.

I believe a Lt. Calley took the fall for that. Definitely a black eye on America's 'good guys' image. Totally inexcusable, but war has not been described as "hell" for the last 100 years without a reason. It is hell, for the military and the civilians who may inevitably be affected by it.
As bad as the incident at My Lai was, it does not absolve Ms. Fonda of any of the guilt associated with her own misbehavior, which in itself, served as a rallying cry for America's enemies. At that time she was to the Viet Cong what Tokyo Rose was to the Japanese--a PROPAGANDIST.

What, exactly, does FOX News have to do with Jane Fonda sitting on a Russian Tank, wearing a Commie field hat in the middle of Viet Nam? Fox News is no more propagandist than the alphabet channels except Fox looks at things from the right while the rest of them see everything through a left leaning prism. Nothing wrong with either view except Fox takes all the crap from you lefties as though they were the only ones out there reporting the news. I'll tell one thing, though; you'll get a hell of a lot more truth out of Fox then you will ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, MSNBC, or EIEIO. Prove me wrong on that. Show me where something true took place and Fox got it totally wrong and the others had it right. (crickets, please)

Lt Calley and 23 others were put on trial. His subordinates were given dishonorable discharges and Calley got life in prison but ended up serving 21/2 years under house arrest. I firmly believe the life sentence should have been carried out as I believe Fonda should have been tried for treason.

A lot of returning Vietnam Vets removed their Vietnam service ribbons from their uniforms and many changed into civilian clothes as soon as the plane landed. A group of us did neither when we landed in San Francisco, big mistake! The crowds and media were there waiting and things got pretty ugly.
Please thank your husband for his service and go to You Tube and Al Pelletier Rumford Me. My final performance of a song I wrote and performed at the 25th Anniversary of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC. I wrote this song to help Vietnam Vets make sense of what we did.
Sorry about the baloney remark, I still have a hard time putting this Fonda thing behind me.

Our country is probably MORE divided today than it was back then. Political discord has seen to that. Also, our children have seen another Vietnam; in fact, they've seen two. Iraq and Afghanistan. Would you agree?

I wrote the song about 10 years after the fall of Saigon when Americans were finally starting to come together and yes, you would have thought Vietnam would have taught us a lesson about sticking our patriotic noses in another countries business. As least our returning troops are being treated with some level of dignity.
