AUGUSTA — Just as the Maine Legislature settles one concealed weapons records issue, another one awaits action.
Gov. Paul LePage has signed a bill rushed through the Legislature in a single day that temporarily keeps data on Maine's concealed weapons permit holders confidential.
A separate bill awaiting action would create a central database of permit-holders to give law enforcement agencies easier access to the information.
The Kennebec Journal in Augusta (http://bit.ly/12MuHvP ) says police like the proposal. They say it would give Maine's law enforcement community better access to information that could help police get guns out of the hands of criminals.
Robert Schwartz, executive director of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, estimates there are about 45,000 permits in Maine. State police estimate there might be 33,000 concealed weapons permits.
