Sabattus selectmen to weigh new gun ordinance

Daryn Slover

David Marsters is proposing an ordinance which mandates every Sabattus head of household to own a gun.

SABATTUS — The resident who a month ago unsuccessfully proposed the town adopt an ordinance requiring every household own a gun will be back in front of selectmen Tuesday with a new proposal.

This time it's an ordinance that says the town won't restrict gun ownership and only encourages every head of household to own a gun and ammo.

David Marsters' proposal starts:

“The Town of Sabattus shall pass no ordinance or policy restricting the residents from the lawful right to bear arms; a right protected by Second Amendment to our United State Constitution and the Constitution of the State of Maine."

In early March, selectmen voted down a proposal by Marsters that would have required gun ownership. He was looking for selectmen's approval to put the measure on the June town warrant, leaving it to a town-wide vote.

Marsters, a retired police officer, said at the time the provision would protect the safety of the town and potentially reduce crime.

Police Chief Anthony Ward opposed it, in part out of concern it could make residents a target for theft.

Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said Friday that he had some concerns about the new proposal. As written, it could prevent selectmen from restricting town employees from carrying guns on the job.

Selectmen will take it up 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Repubs/Baggers want smaller Government, so they say!

Just another example of conservatives' idea of small government and getting government out of the personal lives of the population.

How many laws like this do these people already have on books?

Laws that mean nothing?

Here is Dave Marsters real Plan

You see this retired cop who said previously in his first stab at this, he was intimidating the so called bad people and making them move and that he claims crime has been lessened. The only thing he can raise up, is his gun.

The real deal is Dave now wants everyone armed so that would give him more cause to shot anybody since he know claims they all are armed and dangerous. This is the makings of a psycho path making an accident looking for a place to happen. There once was a movie called Psycho Cop and Dave watched it to many times.

BTW - 2nd and 14th

The 2nd and 14th have this covered. This is redundant.

Here we go again

Time for David Marsters to go back to where he came from..things are fine the way they are..nobody is stopping anyone from owning guns..so what is he doing now. Is this proposal intended to not have to get a permit to carry a gun? I'm confused as to where this is going???? I think it's just an excuse to get attention and put his face out in the media , but all it's doing is making this guy look unstable. One track mind with this guy...GUNS, GUNS, GUNS... I don't feel safe having him live in my town..Yikes!!! He needs to get busy doing something constructive with his life other than find ways to get guns in homes. What does he think we live in, the wild, wild west??? I hope the Sun/Journal stops putting his picture in these articles..I really think he is doing all this for publicity and attention..

It is entertaining...

...that in the column to the right of this article is the headline "Auburn man cleaning gun accidentally shoots himself".

Actually he was shooting his gun and accidentally 'cleaned' himself.......

What would be the point?

State law prevents localities from enacting local gun restrictions anyway, so the ordinance has no real point, just like the first one and the one proposed in Byron. Mr Marsters is doing nothing but making Sabattus and himself the butt of more jokes about those crazy gun people.

Eric: a gun is not the only defensive weapon. I have a number of weapons at hand that require no gunpowder and can be just as deadly. I am not an anti-gun liberal, I just prefer not to have one. The number of cases of "thugs bursting into your house" are statistically insignificant and are a straw man held up to scare the sheep into getting armed whether they are qualified for it or not. Home invasions happen, but only if they have reason to think you have something worth stealing. Or you piss them off.

Personally, I would consider Mr Marsters, who freely admits driving people out of his neighborhood because he didn't like their looks or behavior, to be a thug and a bully, himself.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Bingo, Ba Zinga

And they wonder why they call them

Mass-Holes......

Carl Kimball's picture

EASY

Just leave it to the 2nd amendment and allow the people themself decide to have a gun in their home or not. It's not up to the town to decide for them.

Exactly

It not really about pro-gun or anti-gun. It's about freedom of choice. Even the Selectwoman in Byron who proposed their ordinance voted against it on those grounds. As her father (-in law? I forget) said, just he cause he's a gun owner doesn't give him or anyone the right to require someone else to own a gun.

Eric LeBlanc's picture

It's irresponsible for any

It's irresponsible for any head of household to not own a firearm for protection of the family. I bet all you anti gun liberals would wish you had been armed when 3 thugs kick down your door and rape and torture your family.

MARK GRAVE's picture

Let people decide and lament

Let people decide and lament the wrong decision if necessary; that is freedom. Government should be absent on both sides of the gun debate.

Carl Kimball's picture

NOT REALLY TRUE

I have been around for 63 years and i never had to have a gun for protection...call it luck or survival, but i've done well without it...it's up to the person to decide which they want to do, not the town, state or country...that's why it's your right to have one or not...has nothing to do with being irresponsible. When people say that, "irresponsible", it sounds like their trying to shame people into getting a gun.

Jason Theriault's picture

The problem

The problem is that most of the people I know on the other side are not anti-gun. More gun regulation doesn't mean keep guns out of your hands, it means keeping guns out of the hands of the 3 thugs.

And in your example, I bet all you anti gun control republicans would wish for more gun control when 3 thugs kick down your door and rape and torture your family after shooting you.

Eric LeBlanc's picture

Thugs don't follow laws and

Thugs don't follow laws and more gun control isn't going to change that.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Real Case Senario

You have legal gun(s) and need money, you sell them to anybody for cash and not caring or knowing about their history or acquaintances. Those guns are now in the hands of others with no care who they sell them too.

You now have a chain reaction out of control and you unknowingly just gave criminals, guns to break the law.

Now had there been a record you would of been the one who sold them to an unknown felon, so you then broke the law.

So now you are the THUG...reasonable deduction huh....

This is why background checks are necessary to prosecute the SO CALLED legal gun owners too.

RONALD RIML's picture

'Thugs' don't follow laws???

You'd be surprised, Eric.......

They're actually quite picky about the ones they choose to follow, and the ones they choose not to; like the general population as a whole.

How much interaction have you had with 'Thugs' - or are you referring to your family at large......?

It's the psychopaths one really has to worry about. Many wear suits and ties - even manage hedge funds.....

Jason Theriault's picture

Disagree

With better restrictions, less guns will make it to the black market. Look at England - they confiscated all the handguns. Now, according to your logic, criminals wouldn't turn their guns in, and the only ones with handguns would be criminals. That, however is not the case, and handgun violence is almost non-existent

I'm not saying get rid of handguns, I'm just using this as an example to prove your point is wrong.

Eric LeBlanc's picture

There are millions and

There are millions and millions of guns already on the black market and they're not going away. No amount of restrictions will ever change that. England never had anywhere near the gun surplus as the United States. My point stands and research proves it.

Jason Theriault's picture

That is incorrect

Guns confiscated by police are destroyed. So the number of guns would drop

RONALD RIML's picture

The y may not 'Go Away' but I've taken them away......

Next case.......

RONALD RIML's picture

David Marsters claimed he was going off to Switzerland

Where the whole country had to be armed to maintain their neutrality.

Then he found out they didn't want 'Gun Nuts' and reconsidered Sabattus.....

Are you listening there, Chamber of Commerce?????

Coo-koo

Time for Dave Marsters to be committed to the funny farm. They would be better off proposing an ordinance to banish Marsters for the safety of Sabattus and its citizens.

Dave was a Cop in Massachusetts and wants more guns......

I was one in Illinois and want less.
