Auburn man cleaning gun accidentally shoots himself

AUBURN — A Newbury Street resident was hospitalized Sunday evening after accidentally shooting himself while attempting to clean his handgun.

According to Sgt. Laurie Woodhead, a 22-year-old male was in his 38 Newbury St. apartment at about 7:20 p.m., attempting to remove a bullet from the chamber of his .40 Glock in order to clean the weapon.

Woodhead said the man was unaware his finger was positioned on the trigger when the gun discharged. The bullet entered his left palm and exited the side of his hand.

He was transported to Central Maine Medical Center by United Ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. The Auburn Police Department found the bullet, and no charges will be filed.

If only he had a gun, so he could have protected himself from shooting himself.

The safety?

I'm not sure about a Glock, but I know that my gun won't fire if the safety is on, even if I have my finger on the trigger. I know that accidents happen, but why on earth would you try to clear your gun with your finger on the trigger? Just proves what responsible gun owners say. "Guns don't kill/hurt people, it is stupid people that kill/hurt people."

Glocks have a trigger blade safety

So, by having his finger on the trigger, he'd effectively deactivated the safety.
The trigger blade safety is one reason they're popular with law enforcement; you don't have to remember to turn the safety off in a stressful situation, you just have to remember to pull the trigger.

That is why I said...

That is why I said that I didn't know about a Glock!!! My handgun does have a safety and it will not disengage by pulling the trigger. I always have a full magazine, one in the chamber and the safety on. I practice (fully empty of course) playing with the safety on/off, so that if I should ever have to use it for fear of my life, I won't have to fumble around, it is almost like second nature. The point was that no matter what type of gun you own, you should be familar enough with it to know what it will and will not do and always be aware of where your trigger finger is at all times.

and I agree

Perhaps you misunderstood me; I wasn't criticizing you, I was just trying to explain how he was able to bypass the safety like that.

I gotcha. Sorry if I came

I gotcha. Sorry if I came across as defensive. Accidents like this (preventable) tend to get my feathers ruffled. It makes responsible gun owners look bad. I value the Second Amendment, and this guy makes us look bad. The government is trying so hard to take our rights away, and people like him give them ammo for their cause. No pun intended.

you could say...

he's giving them a hand?

That's the reason...........

I think that's the reason, I have always preferred "Revolvers"............................

I wonder if.......................

I wonder if his first thought after shooting himself in the hand was, Damn, I hope the Sun Journal E-Edition posters don't hear about this, I'll never hear the end of it, and so he shouldn't.

Pulling the trigger is ONE way to remove the bullet from the chamber so you can clean the gun...but it's hardly the best one.
Not sure why he had his finger inside the trigger guard anyway; Glocks have got a pretty simple take down procedure that has nothing to do with the trigger.
Of course, if you make something idiot proof, they'll just build a better idiot.
