E. Ayer: The right to bear arms

What is it going to take for our elected representatives to understand the Constitution of the United States that they all swore an oath to uphold and defend as the supreme law of the land?

Perhaps there is a school teacher out there who can give our congressmen and women a refresher course in the meaning of the words in the Second Amendment that very clearly states that the people's "... right to bear arms shall not be infringed."

While President Barack Obama is pushing for weapons restrictions, I am concerned about a recent massive purchase of weapons and ammunition by the Department of Homeland Security, reported by many sources on the web, including the Associated Press.

DHS spokespeople have conflicting responses and several Republican members of Congress are demanding an explanation. The size of the purchase of ammunition is unprecedented and could mean a shortage of ammunition available to the general public, according to stories on the web.

Any attempt to leave the public defenseless is un-American. There is no other word for it.

It is interesting that Sen. Susan Collins had the courage to visit and face Mainers about gun control measures being debated. Where is Rep. Mike Michaud and Sen. Angus King? They all need to remember who they work for, and it is not Obama.

Everett Ayer, Sumner

So if your 'Right to Bear Arms shall not be Infringed"

Where's your 155mm howitzer, Everett???

Keep Dreaming, Lad.....

Yea, another one of these letters.

First off Everett, no amendment is absolute. You can't yell fire in a movie theater, and already some forms of firearms are off limits.

Secondly - DHS has put in a request for 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammo so it's available. It hasn't actually purchased it yet, and according to DHS, its a ceiling, and that it will use far less than that number.

(Notice the source)

This will not cause an ammo shortage. Take a deep breath, it's going to be ok

There's going to be a lot of cheap ammunition flooding

I dunno

It sounds more and more likely that Hillary is going to run, and she is polling ahead of everyone.
If she doesn't, than the GOP candidate would have to be considered a front runner. I mean, I like Uncle Joe, but Biden isn't Presidential, and he is too old. Gore might have a chance, but I would think Christie or Rubio would be able to win it out.

Regardless, there is alot of time between then and now. It will be interesting. And alot of it will be how the economy is doing. If it keeps going up, I think dems will get some Obama coat tail action going. If it takes a dump on itself, well, Republicans will hammer dems with that all day.

MARK GRAVE's picture

I actually think Hillary

I actually think Hillary would have be better than Obama. Anyhow the US has had enough of both Clinton and Bush's.

RONALD RIML's picture

We'll have eight years to evaluate Hillary's Presidency

Same as Obama.

That will not happen....

It would take ...

... a reading of the document for the first time, but that's no guarantee of understanding it, as evidenced by most of the current inmates in Congress and the Executive - including a certain former Constitutional law professor.

And we are rapidly approaching the tipping point where we won't be able to find a school teacher qualified to offer that refresher course.

RONALD RIML's picture

Poor Mike LeBlanc

He assumes here that it's the Legislative and/or Executive Branches of Government that call the shots on 'Understanding' a certain 'Document'

That authority - Mike - lies with the Judicial Branch.

And you want to play with the 'Big Kids?'

MICHAEL LEBLANC's picture

I will refrain from joining Mr. Riml ...

... on his typical ad-hominem playground.

I expect Congress and the Executive to exhibit some minimal understanding of a document they have all sworn to uphold and defend. That's not "calling the shots", it's demonstrating legislative responsibility, something in very short supply, especially since Empress Nancy voiced the doctrine of passing an unread bill to see what's in it.

The Constitution does not confer any such authority on SCOTUS or the lower courts. They took the authority in 1803 in Marbury v. Madison. The only shot they can call is to declare a law unConstitutional, and many would say they refused to properly exercise that authority last June.

Congress can begin calling a shot by passing an amendment and sending it to the states. The Executive has no part in this, but unfortunately it is determined to grab the authority to ignore a law if it "deems" it unConstitutional.

Weapons of war...

...(ie: AK-47 et al) can be are are regulated. That has absolutely nothing to do with the Second Amendment.
