Lewiston convict arrested in downtown bat beating

LEWISTON — A Pierce Street man was arrested Thursday and charged with assaulting a man with a bat the night before.

Rasaun Hampton, 37, was charged with aggravated assault. He is accused of hitting a man in the head with a baseball bat during a fight at 143 Bartlett St.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a gash to his head, police said. He was treated and later released.

The attack was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. When police arrived, they found the victim bleeding from his head. The assailant had fled. Police searched for Hampton throughout the night and on Thursday found him in the downtown area.

According to court records, Hampton has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for aggravated drug trafficking and assault. After his arrest Thursday, he was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

Did the alleged crime occur

Did the alleged crime occur in a bat free zone and if so are there any plans to propose a seven day waiting period to purchase a bat in the future and maybe some background checks on all bat purchases? Maybe register bats heavier than 15 oz? Could we make all bats out of foam so no one gets hurt again?

Hillarios

I bet those families at Columbine, Aurora, and Newtown just find you really funny.

I bet those little kids are just rolling in their graves, what's left of them, from your humor.

Maybe running into some ash yourself might get your mind straightened out.
