4-year-old boy brings loaded gun to Hallowell preschool

HALLOWELL (AP) — Authorities in Maine are investigating after a 4-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun to his Hallowell preschool.

The district attorney's office has asked for more information to determine whether to bring charges.

Police Chief Eric Nason said a staff member found the loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic handgun in a bag the boy brought to Rollins Family Child Care Center on April 23. Nason said the gun's safety was on but a round was in the chamber.

He told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/10yCT22 ) the gun was in a bag the boy uses to carry belongings between the homes of his divorced parents.

Nason said the gun was legally owned by the boy's father, who reported that he had last seen it in the door pocket of his pickup truck on April 18.

Sounds to me like the mother

Sounds to me like the mother took and planted the gun in the bag to make the father appear reckless and irresponsible. It makes sense since they are going through a divorced and the spiteful mother probably wants to end the father's visitation rights.

Maybe, but

Nason said the gun was legally owned by the boy's father, who reported that he had last seen it in the door pocket of his pickup truck on April 18.
Maybe the wife set him up, but the door pocket of your car is NOT A GOOD (or legal) PLACE TO STORE YOUR GUN

The Maine Constitution is quite clear

"Section 16. To keep and bear arms. Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned."

The four-year old is a Maine Citizen. Who are we common-sense liberals to question to question his right to keep and bear arms???

hmph. Potentially misleading incomplete statement.

"Nason said the gun was legally owned by the boy's father, who reported that he had last seen it in the door pocket of his pickup truck on April 18."

It should be noted that the boy's father made that statement when he reported the gun as stolen on the evening of the 18th, not when/if he was contacted for this story.

"Last seen in the door pocket of his p.u."

So this fool took for granted no one would find or touch the gun there? And why is his handgun in his truck anyway? This episode could have gone real bad in the flash of a gunshot. To leave it where his kid had easy access to it? Some people just aren't suited to pro-create.

Well in another story a

Well in another story a person used a screwdriver should we ban those as well?

Here we go again. Discussing

Here we go again. Discussing the ban of silly items to ruffle feathers. Yes, technically a four-year-old could do some kind of strange damage with a screw driver but the results wouldn't be as quick and final. Banning weapons isn't the issue in this case as much as responsible gun ownership. Do you believe it's a good idea to keep loaded weapons out of the backpacks of unwitting preschoolers, Bob?

David Cote's picture

This is not about banning guns...

This is about banning idiots from possessing guns that don't know how to properly take care of them. The perception is this guy's lack of common sense helps in making responsible gun owners look bad, especially when they can't fathom why this incident is such a huge deal.

Forrest Gump

Stupid is as stupid does. The father is stupid. How do I know? It takes at least a moment of stupidity to be so careless as to leave a loaded firearm where a 4 year old can pick it up. Shame on him!

And since no one was hurt, thank God, I might add:

Hey, Stupid! We have a hard enough time convincing gun control liberals to listen to a little logic without your idiocy giving them courage! Thanks for nothing.

Reflection

Sure Bob, it takes one to know one, since you have so much in common, as you say ...time convincing gun control liberals....we are already convinced that there are a whole lot of you. Proof alone from all of the children killed in the last three weeks, you all have something in common, irresponsible mentalities on a grand scale.

Reflection

My children did not have access to guns when they were 4. They do now, in controlled situations, since they're older. They're trained to treat them with respect. And my family is safer as a result. You may find that stupid. That's your prerogative. But doing so (plus all the other inanities I've seen from you in the past) makes my opinion of you fairly clear. I'd insult you further, but you are not worth my time.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

And my family is safer as a result.

I'll bet Lanza's mother thought the same thing too...I can bet a whole many other parents said the same thing too...the Menendez brothers parents as so many countless more.....it's easy to live in a bubble...but be very careful the air gets thin....at least my intelligence and imagination as you challenged and stated has been very lucrative and successful for me, so the inanities as you stated don't mean diddly and fail to apply.

Bob Berry's picture

Low, but expected

Comparing my children to those monsters is both low and expected from you. Jerry, I would say shame on you, but it seems you have none. I wish I could express how strongly I loath you for saying that.

However, feel free to compare me to a monster's parent. If that's what you were doing, fine. Let's talk about that. Training my kids about firearms does not make them a monster. It does equip them to shoot. A mother teaching a girl to put on make-up does not make the daughter a prostitute. A father teaching a son to drive does not make him a drunk driver. An army officer teaching a soldier to make an improvised bomb does not make that soldier a terrorist.

Leaving a firearm where a 4 yo could grab it and bring it to school would make me stupid and irresponsible.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Bob, no contrast

You failed and, jumped and got defensive. I did not compare them to those monsters, the reality is do not think for a moment that this does happen to many, that is a truism. I am pointing out that thinking it can't happen is being naive, and you believe that all is good when it ain't. This is facts, reality. You can do all that is right and proper and in a blink of an eye it doesn't mean anything once it happens

I grew up with guns, hunted and very good with marksmanship, and safety since I have many and had a dad that taught us well about respect and proper use. I stayed out of the woods now since a rifle bullet missed my head by inches and hit the tree above my head.
Here it was a bunch of guys, up all night drinking and in the woods to hunt and nearly killed me.
I had a CCW in CT and in AZ, had to use it once, for self defense, or get to wear a tire iron, but guess what, there are no guarantees in life just because you claim you do all the right things and living with rose tinted glasses and think all is grand, it's not.

That is why I said, what I said, that just because you say it doesn't make it so....

Bob White's picture

Well Jerry you can take the

Well Jerry you can take the gun away from the Liberal but your still stupid
