Maine to send inmates to clean up Lewiston lots

AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Corrections is sending prisoner work crews to Lewiston to help clean up debris and flammable material in more than 50 vacant lots.

More coverage of the Lewiston fires:

The crews are going to Lewiston in the wake of three fires in apartment buildings that have left nearly 200 people homeless.

Maine Correctional Center Superintendent Scott Burnheimer said prisoner crews will not work directly at the fire scenes, but will assist the city in cleaning up vacant lots that have debris and fire hazards on them.

Gov. Paul LePage calls that a proactive approach to preventing fires.

Maine inmates to clean up vacant lots.

Great idea if well supervised. If they are not well supervised, another opportunity for drugs. In Florida there are crews, more often than not, helping with cleaning the highways of litter and etc. People have to be more innovative in ways to make things work better. In Arizona they work.

clean up

What a great idea. Should be doing it all the time. That way they get plenty of fresh air as well and alot more room outside and will be to tired when they get back to complain about overcrowding or to tired to play table tennis. Maybe they will watch the news and see more idiots out there breaking the laws. Might make them think twice about setting fires or destruction if they had to clean it up. Be nice wouldn't it?
