A 1997 Subaru Legacy station wagon being driven in reverse late Thursday afternoon on Thad White Road in Mexico rolled off the road and landed on its roof in this drainage ditch, pinning a teen who was riding on the roof, police said.

An M/T Pockets tow truck of Dixfield takes a demolished 1997 Subaru Legacy station wagon away on Thad White Road in Mexico on Thursday. Its teen driver backed the car onto the road's soft shoulder, which flipped the wagon over, dropping it about 8 feet into a drainage ditch. A teen who had been riding on the roof was pinned beneath it.

Firefighters from Mexico, Rumford and Dixfield lifted the rear of the car and held it up, allowing Med-Care Ambulance crewmen to retrieve the injured boy, Rumford fire Deputy Chief Richard Coulombe said.

The teen, whose injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, was taken by Med-Care to Rumford Hospital, Mexico police Lt. Roy Hodsdon said at the scene.

Citing pending charges, Hodsdon declined to identify the injured teen, the Canton driver of the 1997 Subaru Legacy station wagon or two teen passengers from Peru and Dixfield.

The accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on a dirt road that parallels the Webb River. Hodsdon said a 15-year-old boy from Canton, who was learning to drive, backed the car toward a curve, got into the soft shoulder on the outside of the curve and flipped the car over. It fell about 8 feet, landing upside down, pinning a leg of the teen who was riding on the roof, Hodsdon said.

Coulombe said they had enough manpower between the three fire departments to lift the rear of the car high enough to free the pinned teen.

Hodsdon said the boy, who had scrapes and bruises, escaped serious injury.

"Soft mud kind of cushioned the fall into the water in the brook," the lieutenant said. "I talked to the ambulance crew and they said he was conscious and breathing. It could have been worse."

One of the passengers complained of elbow pain but refused treatment, Hodsdon said.

Driver inexperience was cited as the accident's cause.

The car was moving a very low speed, Hodsdon said. "He wanted to practice driving because he was getting ready to go take his driver's test."

The station wagon, which is owned by Barry Prescott of Canton, was retrieved by M/T Pockets Towing and Repair of Dixfield.

. . ..Ya' gotta' admit , we all did some crazy things driving as teens . Heck , We flipped a VW once while trying to put it in-side the school ( and lived to tell about it ) We also rolled old payloader tires down the hill and literally snapped apple trees with them before they would cross the lane at the bottom and go in to a swamp
i can well relate to this particular accident
The Bishop of Micronesia ( Amando Samoa ) almost killed me once in a similar accident when the Toyota ® pick up truck he was driving over a causeway flipped over and pinned me underneath it -- under water -- whilst i was purportedly teaching him to drive
If i died i knew where i was going ?
We hope and pray that the youngster pinned under Barry Prescott's Legacy ® will be okay after this ordeal [ and his 15 year old and other buddies ]
There is a simple lesson in all this . †hink and drive . No car surfing . Car accidents are the number #1 killer of teens in these U S of A

Stating the obvious & being overly obnoxious.

No there was no license. Yes he was lucky & it was a dumb act. Jeff, dumbass? You're a dumbass for calling a kid a name like that especially when the kid may see your ignorant post. Stacey your comment is actually positive, though I'm sure you 'thought' it would be a negative jab...see they actually LIVED and reasonably intelligent people could actually conclude that all involved learned something and will probably avoid that type of situation in the future.
What happened to basic human niceties? Why can't people be thankful that no one was hurt seriously and then go on with th

With all due respect, you

With all due respect, you seem to be trying to make "business as usual" out of an illegal and utterly stupid act. Thankfully, no one WAS killed.

If they need to see Jeff's

If they need to see Jeff's post to realize that they are dumbasses, well... They are dumbasses. Doubly so if this incident didn't already cement that fact. As Jim Kirk said in Star Trek IV, "Double dumbass on you!".

You complain about basic human niceties but you called someone else a dumbass for their comment. Oh, the irony...

hmmmm...

If you're gonna get wrapped up in posting, so far as to call someone out for using a word, at least look through previous posts. It helps to follow along..."Jeff" used the term dumbass first and since he was who I was referring to in my post, it was definately appropriate. Have a Great Day Andrew.

Oh man

Veronica, you are totally right! We should always gloss over the stupid things that kids do when parents don't give them the tools to not be complete idiots. Phew, it's a blessing from a god that they didn't die and the parents aren't dealing with a funeral, golly gee willikers aren't we all just happy enough to skip?
Oh, wait. Back when the Beaver was on these kids wouldn't have pulled this stunt because they knew that dad would be taking them behind the woodshed. Now, we just get to sit around and see if it's lesson learned or if some other Darwinian pool cleaning will take them out.

Seriously?

Get a grip Stacey. Not every kid is as so obviously intelligent as you must have been. And news flash!!!!...even kids of the BEST parents make mistakes.

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

I agree, but what the hell

I agree, but what the hell goes on in a kid's head that causes him to think that lying flat on the roof of a moving car is a good idea?. You couldn't get a monkey to do that, unless you strapped him down.
It has nothing to do with intelligence; it has to do with the ability to make intelligent choices.
