D. Marquis: Republicans incapable of governing

Thomas Shields (July 25) still refuses to look at his own party’s failures.

Intelligence agencies set talking points for all agencies of government while facts are gathered and confirmed. Benghazi was a serious investigation. Fact check.org says it cannot say the administration was intentionally misleading the public. There were huge mistakes made for sure. The last administration lied the U.S. into a war costing 4,488 American lives, 32,021 wounded, at a cost of $2 trillion.

Yes, Benghazi was tragic. Is Obama worse than the Bush administration? Please.

The people of the Middle East need to learn to solve their own problems. The U.S. cannot jump into every conflict around the world at the behest of Americans like Shields. American strength does not come from the barrel of a gun, it comes from the values system. It would be wrong to have the world thinking U.S. values are based on invasion, war and control.

Harassment of conservative organizations? The bombshell IRS audit released in May omitted information about liberal groups at the request of House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration’s office. The IRS was flagging liberal and conservative groups equally. Chairman Issa was on a witch hunt and got caught.

The deficit is falling under the Obama administration by $200 billion more than projected.

Why doesn’t Shields want to talk about the 37 times Republicans voted to repeal Obamacare? Iraq?

Could it be because the Republican Party is a shameful embarrassment incapable of governing?

David Marquis, Lewiston

D. Marquis: Republicans incapable of governing

Mainers, Thurs. night 17:30 August 1st
Boner [sic] couldn't get his own party to support his own budget bill today , fool that he is . He has alienated accountants , young people , women , minorities ( and other democrats ) , all sensible individuals , most other republican and independant voters who aren't sipping tea and marrying their secretaries ( Gingrich ) in the back rooms on the hill
He has no allies or friends because everyone knows he is a power hungry petty tyrant .He is playing piss poor politics and we all suffer
The US House of Representative had passed about 22 bills this year , things like naming post offices , stretches of hi-way and naming other landmarks
This is just about the worst Congress ever in our history and follows the worst executive officer since Warren Harding '21 - '23 ( i.e., Bush jr. )

In response to your final question...........

YES.
This witch hunt the Republican Party has been focused on for some time now, indicates how desperate they have become. I can't understand how the citizens, who elected these fools into office, can just sit back and watch this embarrassment unfold.
If these so called elected officials would just dedicate themselves to performing the jobs they were put in office to do, maybe we could be living in some kind of harmony.
Last night I heard Rand Paul comment, regarding this little feud he's having with Chris Cristie. How "there are plenty of Democrats to attack, so lets stop fighting amongst ourselves". That is exactly the kind of statement we have come to expect from the Right. Could someone please educate me as to how attacking the opposing side is more beneficial than working together? Do these yahoo's pay attention to the public opinion polls? If they did they may be shocked to realize how much they are driving people away with their theatrics.
This has gone on long enough. I don't want theatrics, I don't want big government, I don't want small government. All I want to see is a functioning government. Get rid of the "Ego's", just do the job they are there for. they could accomplish a lot in four years. I'm sick of elected officials wasting my time and tax dollars acting like school children out at recess.

Thats the problem, Frank

As the extremists gain a louder voice, the more moderate voters are turned off of the whole process, so as a result, only the extremists vote in the primaries, and the Tea Party and socially conservbative libertarians (contradiction intended) prevail. So then in the general election, the moderate yet loyal GOP voters either hold their noses and vote for their party anyway (and the TP candidate wins) or, in the case of a candidate too extreme to bear, they vote for the dems or stay home (and the dem in that district wins).

That's how they get in.

To a smaller extent, that's how the more fringey Democrats get elected, too.

Good letter

Very factual. Republicans have chosen to sabotage the Federal Government and the economy while implementing their real agenda in states they completely control i.e.
1. More than 200 unconstitutional laws denying health care to women
2. laying off public employees, cutting their salaries and/or reducing or denying their benefits
3. Suppressing minority voting
4. Unconstitutional immigration laws
5. Unconstitutional laws to impose religious dogma on secular institutions /programs

in hopes of gaining the big prizes - repeal of Medicare, Social Security, Anti-discrimination laws.

A vote for any Republican is a vote to turn our back on progress and America's future.

Benghazi

The Republicans, in their zeal to proactively smear Hillary, divulged a secret CIA operation which involved sending Libyan weapons to the Syrian rebels via Turkey. The attack on the embassy occurred because Al Qaida thought the CIA was operating out of the embassy when it was actually nearby. The embassy downplayed protection because their budget was cut and they also claimed they did not want to draw attention to CIA activities. After the attack both the CIA and the State dept. continued to protect our allies in Libya and in Turkey while the Republicans were spilling our secrets to Assad and to Islamic militants in Turkey. My guess is that the embassy personnel chose to protect our secrets rather than to call in military aid on that day and that they are heroes unlike the opportunists who made their sacrifice useless. I think we can probably blame the unrest in Turkey that occurred afterwards to be a result of this breach of security. Republicans are now looking to make war with the rebels in Syria while at the same time helping the Assad forces They are a circular firing squad.

"My guess is that the embassy personnel chose to protect our secrets rather than to call in military aid on that day and that they are heroes unlike the opportunists who made their sacrifice useless."

You guessed wrong - again.

"Here’s the time line: Attackers streamed into the State Department’s temporary mission on Sept. 11 at around 9:45 p.m. The ambassador called Hicks to alert him to the attack. As Tripoli and Washington scrambled to respond, attackers set a diesel-fueled fire that killed Stevens and information officer Sean Smith.

Americans in Tripoli sent a seven-person security team to Benghazi, which landed around 1:15 a.m. Held up by lack of transportation and escort from Libyans, it got to the annex around 5 a.m. — just in time for a second attack. Mortar rounds rained, killing American security officers on the roof, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty."

The IRS

The job of the IRS is to collect tax money owed. They should be going after all the tax cheats whether they are liberal or conservative. The fact that they suddenly had a bunch of conservative groups file for exemption all at once before the election would of course mean they would look there. The fact that their budget was cut and the congress wouldn't approve their leadership would also mean they would look to save money and had people making decisions who would normally look to leadership for that.. They went after the Occupy groups plenty. It just occurred at a different time. The current geniuses in the House want to cut the IRS budget by 83 billion. That should really improve things. The Republicans are now a circular firing squad complaining at the same time we have a deficit and defunding the guys who collect the taxes.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

You can keep trying to fool

You can keep trying to fool yourself with those talking points. Even IRS officials are telling a different story; they admitted to targeting conservative groups.

Who should the readers believe? Claire Camache's version of the story from backwoods Maine, or IRS officials?

Perhaps the IRS story!

Yea, I would disagree too

Yea, I would disagree too since the IRS admitting to bias does but a kink in your story.

Talking points

You also use talking point selectively. They admitted to using unusual processes to clump conservative groups together for purposes of efficiency not politics. That isn't the same. Issa also admitted to fudging the statistics to make it look as if they were targeting conservatives that is why the investigation went nowhere.

The #s are straight-forward. The I.R.S. has been targeting conservative groups, not that I disagree with the philosophy behind it, but the I.R.S. is supposed to be impartial in carrying out its duties and it's clear in this case they have not been. Goes to show you can't win em' all...
