Snowe: I have a responsibility to act

LEWISTON — If you ask U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe why she voted in favor of a bill that her party opposes, that she doesn't like all that much and that didn't even need her vote in order to pass, she says the answer is simple.

"It's (because of) the state I represent, the political legacy and traditions that I've inherited that are ingrained and instilled in me," the Maine Republican said in an interview Wednesday. "These are very challenging times for Americans and Mainers and the most important thing you can do is try to solve problems, and this is the major problem facing people."

On Tuesday, Snowe was the only Republican from among five congressional committees to vote in favor of health care reform legislation.

It's been a top legislative priority for President Barack Obama, but Democrats and Republicans have had difficulty finding enough common ground on which to build legislation, particularly in the face of the acrimonious debate that followed many politicians around their home districts during the summer recess.

Americans are rightly concerned about Congress' ability to reform the health care system, Snowe said.

"They've got conflicting emotions — they know we've got a problem, but they're not sure Congress can deal with it right and that's overshadowed by the decline in the economy and the anxieties that emerge from joblessness and the cost of living," she said.

Health care is an issue Snowe has worked on throughout her more than 30 years in Congress, as a member of both the House and the Senate. She has been immersed in the issue since last May as a member of the so-called "Gang of Six" group of bipartisan senators from the Senate Finance Committee. It's an issue she can't walk away from, Snowe said.

Though the bill she helped craft was not quite what she hoped it would be, Snowe said she voted for it to "keep the process going."

The finance bill will be blended with another Senate bill passed out of a different committee and will likely be further changed when it is brought to the full Senate floor.

"The industry has come off, this last decade, a 500 percent growth in profits, while premiums have gone up 131 percent, wages 38 percent and inflation 28 percent," Snowe said. "You know there's a problem. Is there a possibility of dealing with it? I feel I have a responsibility to do that, regardless of what party I'm in."

Snowe said too many of her colleagues are unwilling to take stands on issues, making it more difficult to reach consensus and grapple with the big issues.

"We live in a really risk-adverse environment here; you have fewer and fewer people willing to step out. That's what happens around here, people just say, 'OK, it's too risky so we'll just let it go'," she said. "I didn't expect to be the lone Republican. It's just sort of when the decks were cleared, I was the only one standing."

The public option is the

The public option is the only tool that will bring some checks and balances to the health care insurance industry. Snowe's remarks make clear that there are no free markets in insurance. Increasing premiums by 138% when inflation is 28% and income growth 31% (and no income growth among 60% of the population) is not sustainable and can only be the explained by active monopolies which by law the insurance companies have been allowed to create. But what made all these

But what made all these action possible was the false "free market" propaganda from Ayn Rand, Ron Paul, and all the libertarian nonsense in between. This is the intellectual capital spawned over the last 80 years that has lead us to financial disaster.

Scotty_O, its not hating

Scotty_O, its not hating Bush to recognize that the recession of 2007 was primarily caused by a failure of regulation - regulation that largely worked until 2000. A combination of repealing those rgulations and a failure to enforce those or new regulations caused the failure. That failure can be seen in the Madoff scandal. The SEC was warned about his criminal activity many times. Many times they failed to take actions their regulations demanded. Combine that with the repeal of various Great Depression laws and decisions to reduce liquidity requirements and you produce an asset bubble every time. Bush gets credit because he approved or should have approved many of the decision and it occurred on his watch. He let the bankers, the mortgage brokers, the assessors, and the consumers exercise their greed. He let the evil out of panadora's box. Not only did he let the evil out; he advocated that it was good. He bought into the Gecko lie "Greed is Good". He promoted it.
Now we must put the evil back in the box by creating a system of checks and balances which will one prevent regulators from ignoring their jobs and which will force accountability on everyone involved in these transaction and restore the Great Depression laws which protected the system for so long.

I beleive the bill you are

I beleive the bill you are refering to was the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (yes all three repubs) Voted by Republicans 205–16; and Democrats 138–69 in July 1999 and enacted in November 1999. I Believe Clinton was President then. This is bill refered to as the one that repealed parts of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 created during the Great Depression. Again, though, what about personal responsibility, that was my main point.

we are still mopping up

we are still mopping up bushes mess where where you crybabies then to allow all the crap we went through with bush

Scotty_O's picture

That's the problem, your not

That's the problem, your not mopping up Bushes mess, your fueling the fire with more bailouts and trying to pass a health care bill instead of healing the economy. And no, I did not agree with the bailouts when Bush was doling them out either. And 25 percent of the Afghan war casualties over the entire span of the war has been on Obamas watch. If this is your idea of mopping, its time to wring it out and change the water. Quit being a finger pointing Bush hater. The economy tanked because of greedy banks and bad loans to people who could not afford them. I don't know about you, but I had to shove down 20% in 2001 for my house and prove I had good credit and an income to boot......some of the blame has to rest with the busdriver who signed the dotted line for the ARM loan for $750,000, and also with the banker who was too greedy to care if he/she could pay for it.

Scotty here is some support: Community Reinvestment Act!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_Reinvestment_Act

this was modfies in 95, Barney Franks was deeply involved in this bill. This bill laid the foundation for the collapse of the Financial market
For those who doesn't believe this DO your research Acorn was involved as-well.

Thanks, but I already got em

Thanks, but I already got em with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which was a bi-partisan bill passed during the last months of the Clinton admininstration. And guess what y'all, Snowe and and Collins voted for it! Many have tried to say it was Bush who de-regulated the markets, but it was all a republican bill, passed by huge majorities in both parties in the late nineties.

for the ones that say we

for the ones that say we need Welfare Reform more than we need healthcare reform, obviously have health insurance. When you go without it, you realize what is going on here. Did all you opposers READ this article??? Their PROFITS have gone up 500% (for the ones that dont understand "profit" that means how much these companies have made off of us. PREMIUMS have gone up 131% (once again, if you dont understand this...it means the price WE pay so that their PROFIT can increase 500%). WAGES (the money people make when they work)have only gone up 38%. INFLATION has gone up 28%. Now, I work for a small business that had to discontinue health insurance because of lack of funds. Why is the cost for insurance so much higher for us because we are a small company, vs. larger companies?? It should not matter, and the working population should be allowed EQUAL coverage no matter what company they work at.

Way to go Snowe!! Thank you for actually looking at the issues.

If you are referring to

If you are referring to TARP, financial institutions have to pay it back. So that eliminates the bailouts. For it to be "welfare", they have to be able to keep it and not pay it back.

Hard to believe ANYONE who

Hard to believe ANYONE who read the bill could be in favor of it. I think she voted simply because there was no public option in it. As Common Sense said this bill would lead to more unemployment as it hits any business with more than 25 employees to have to supply a health insurance option. While I agree somewhat with the pricipal of employers needing to provide some access to coverage that too few people. A business of that size will add at least $30000 a month to their costs. The company I work for employs 10000 world wide. They pay over $400 a month for their portion of my health plan with Blue Cross - and that is not the best plan available. I have a deductable and cover 20% out of pocket after that. To get no deductable and 100% coverage my portion goes op about $120 a month and theirs goes up about $300. A small business cannot afford that. A large global company can. Forcing health care on a small company is wrong. The costs of health care (not insurance premiums) is the issue. Every EOB I get from my ins co. shows that they only pay a portion of what the doctors charge as they bill higher than the negotiated coverage rate. Neither I nor the insurance company have to pay it. Only the agreed upon fee in the health plan is covered. That is the problem. The cost for treatment, not the insurance, or lack of it. If the government wants to fix the problem they need to look at the true cost of health care. The bills from doctors, hospitals and drug companies. Why are those costs so high? Not why Johnny doesn't have insurance.

A Mainer, an American, has to feel secure that Senator Snowe will think as she works for Mainers, and Americans, in Congress. I am proud as a voting Mainer of Senator Snowe for her willingness to try to work in a bipartisan manner. As a Democrat, I wish more Democrats, and Republicans, did the same.

Speak as rationally as possible, recognizing human beings are not always rational.

Before you pass judgement

Before you pass judgement you really need to read the bill. This one puts ot all on the back of small business and is going to cost a lot of jobs. Small businesses that require the number of employees that would require them to insure will close because they simply can not afford the to insure, if they could they already would be. Small businesses operating over the threshhold that can downsize to get under will layoff employees to do just that. Small businesses that can be operated below the threshhold will make that their number one business plan item and operating requirement.

There are no subsidizes for three years, that is not until after Obama leaves office. Democrats are so sure they can get this through just by their numbers it has become loaded down with enough pork laiden attachments to sink battle ship healthcare reform becoming a miniscule part of the misery it will impart. You really need to read the bill and the attachments before passing judgement.

If we could only return to common sense...

So the Republi-con platform

So the Republi-con platform is insurance and health care is only for those who have the scratch to pay for it. Of course, they would do everything in their power to make sure that they are the only ones who have the jobs that pay well enough to afford anything more than white bread, balony, and a couple of band-aids-just like they're doing now.

At least the Democrats and moderate Republi-cons are making an effort to do something, which is more than I can say for the hard line Republi-cons. All they can seem to do is pass tax cuts for the wealthy, claiming that it will trickle down to everyone else. It didn't work under Reagan, it didn't work under Bush I, and it didn't work under Bush II. That said, a conservative friend of mine once said "the only person who never makes a mistake is the person who does nothing." So good to see that the current crop of Republi-cons isn't making any mistakes.

I agree with you Ginger the

I agree with you Ginger the only Real option left is to have a party that is allowed only a set amount for financing thier campain, and only allowed no more than 100 dollar donation that includes meal, show, etc scams to curt the campain laws no thousand dollar plates consisting of chips and pastry!!!! and NO MORE PACS they would have to be individual and with stiff JAIL SENTENCES to drive home the issue as well as having a team of law enforcement with NO POLITICAL VIEWS allowed to wire tap and investigate all our goverment elected officals as well as employees LETS FILL UP THE JAILS WITH THE REAL CRIMINALS!!!! Enough is Enough the time is quickly comming for a revolution in this country and if we do not push for real change then WE WILL HAVE ONE OF THE MOST BLOODY REVOLUTIONS IN OUR HISTORY our fore fathers knew the results of tyanny of the people and they set forth a constitution which served us well for over 200 years, however the last 10 to 20 years we have been invaded by corruption and these so called public servents only serve themselfs!! they treat the constitution as a door mat something that justs gets in thier way. For example the current health bill charging someone not to buy insurance from a private insurer is unconstitutional these YOYOs KNOW IT yet they will say it is passed with a majority vote which is WRONG they would need a 3/4 agreement to amend many issues within this Law as the same with the previous Trade laws they passed which are NOW HAUNTING US!~!!!!!!!!
Manufacturing IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN THE BEST PAYING JOBS IN THE US THEY WERE ALSO THE BACKBONE OF OUR DEFENCE AND WE WER SOLD OUT BY THE SCUM IN WASHINGTON AND AGUSTA!!!!!!!!! THEY PASS SUCH BILLS KNOWING IN THIER HEARTS IT IS WRONG AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL YET THEY KNOW IT WILL COST SOMEONE OVER A MILLION DOLLARS TO BRING IT TO THE SUPREME COURT AND IF THEY PUT THE LAW DOWN THESE SCUMBAGS GO BACK AND REWRITE IT TO HAVE THE SAME EFFECT SO WE HAVE NO CHANCE ANYMORE TO FIGHT THEM. All I can say is if the day comes and they are attacked all i can say is YOU HAD IT COMMING TO YA YOU SOB!!!!.....

ya she and all her

ya she and all her republican and democrat cronies are real cool Rex. They all make 150,000$ a year, plus they get 130,000$ a year for their retirements, plus they already have the best health care coverage for themselves available, plus they vote for pay raises for themselves every year.Primarily they help the people that donate the most $ to their campaigns.that's the only issue both parties agree on.People are struggling to make ends meet, and feed their families, while all these politicians are spending millions to run for office, and many of them forget to pay their taxes. Both parties are loaded with millionaires that have lavish homes and lifestyles. They are so out of touch with the ordinary people it's not even funny. We need to form a taxpayer party.Root out these corrupt buffoons. Out-law campaign contributions, and lobbying, and enforce term limits so some of these 90 year old party manicans can give someone else a chance.
