M. Perreault: Cruelty to lobsters

Recently, I happened to watch a news program that showed a processing plant for lobsters. The lobsters were being torn apart while they were still alive. How cruel.

Lobsters can feel pain. They have feelings.

If you take a lobster and place it on a counter at home, just pat the lobster's head and it will fall asleep. You can also pat the lobster's head and, with your hand, bring the lobster's tail upward. The tail will stay up while patting it.

I also find it cruel at restaurants and lobster pounds where staff just throw lobsters into a pot to cook. Those lobsters suffer and fight for their lives. So cruel. And people should not steam lobsters; that is also cruel.

The best way to cook lobsters is to place them head first, one at a time, in heavily boiling water. They die quickly.

I love lobsters, but I don't want them to suffer, so I do it in the most humane way. I wish others would. It is the proper way.

PETA has lost all sense of its priorities, running around aimlessly like ants in a rainstorm. I wonder where its funding comes from--?? mystery donors say, like taxpayers.

Nuke 'em.

That's pretty quick ain't it? Messy, though.

What a waste of time PETA is. Today they worry about the pain of a lobster being torn apart and this in a day when over 1500 abortions are done daily. Do the fetus's feel pain ?

Hey PETA and Madeleine

Ever heard of baked stuffed lobster? Put them on their back, slice them open from head to tip of tail, fill with stuffing and plop in the oven while they're still flopping. It's a common practice at most Maine seafood restaurants
Now that's something to keep PETA busy for a while.

it wasn't a news progam...

It was a propaganda film by those ignoramouses at PETA. The same group that requested Fishkill NY change its name to something that didn't advocate violence to fish, that wanted to create a "lobster empathy center" in bangor, and who are against consumption of honey because it exploits the bees. Nothing they produce has one shred of cedibility.

Tim Sample is an embarrassment to the state. Probably phoney accent too.

Yup, Carol

He's from R.I., and phoney as a $3.00 bill.

In your humble opinion, of course.

Ah you a native, deah? You ah? Son of a hoah!

Also an FYI

Chuck em in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Knocks em out before the plunge. Also helps prevent the violent reaction to the boiling water, which makes the meat taste better.

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

And freezing them into

And freezing them into unconsciousness is humane, right?

Jason Theriault's picture

Actually, the English have the most humane way..

A english politician invented an electric chair for lobsters called "Crustastun".

Knocks em out in less than a second and kills in like 10 seconds.

I don't know, Jason. Ten

I don't know, Jason. Ten seconds is a pretty long time to be dying.

To put suffering in perspective for you; Christ suffered--lobsters are food.

In February 2005, a review of the literature by the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety tentatively concluded that "it is unlikely that [lobsters] can feel pain."

Jason Theriault's picture

Its sa tough call.

They aren't sure is what it really comes down to. Lobsters and crabs have the nervous tissues that they may feel pain(opioid receptors), but they don't have a well developed brain or nervous system.

From their tests, they have found that crabs react to painful stimuli, and that morphine has an effect on that stimuli.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

Hmm, if we don't know they

Hmm, if we don't know they feel pain, how do we know what a painful stimulus is to them; is it just reflexive behavior?

Morphine also effects reflexive behavior. Take enough morphine and reflexive behavior, such as breathing, stops.

Jason Theriault's picture

It isn't super clear

One of the experiments was with hermit crabs, where they found a shell that the crabs prefered, then they used electroshock to see if pain would dissuade them from staying in the prefered shell.

Your right about morphine. They said it could have been just as easily the other effects of morphine that caused the crabs not to react to pain.

Again, it's not clear at all. If it was clear, we wouldn't be having this conversation. =)

JOANNE MOORE's picture

If I'm dying.....

....(and aren't we all), I'll take morphine over lobster any day!

With all due respect, I hate

With all due respect, I hate to be your family - negativity 24/7. I can't do this, I can't do that, it is the republican's fault, I need more taxpayer money....it just goes on, and on, and on.

What we want is some CLEAR

What we want is some CLEAR lobster meat.

Not only that.

Years ago the renowned seafood expert, Tim Sample, pronounced lobsters to be "wicked numb".
