P. Butler: Canton tax increase outrageous

While other cities and towns were freezing or reducing spending, Canton selectmen chose to recklessly spend more.

The worse spender was the fire chief, who is also one of the selectmen. Within four different articles, his department ended up with $50,000 more than I believe he needs to run his department.

The public works department could have had its budget reduced by $25,000 or more.

The town government budget could have been cut by at least $15,000. Instead, selectmen included a 50 to 60 percent raise they gave themselves, even if they miss meetings.

Those are reasons that Canton residents' taxes went up. You can't spend more and expect taxes to go down.

The selectmen, budget committee and fire department members controlled the town meeting that had 18 or fewer voters. Those people did not represent the taxpayers of Canton.

That is what happens when residents don't attend their own town meeting.

The fire chief is one of the selectmen? Possible conflict of interest? Canton residents (providing they are really concerned about their tax increases) should take a serious look at that situation.

Just curious...

"...his department ended up with $50,000 more than I believe he needs to run his department."

Do you have a basis for that belief? Did you study the paperwork and go over the books at the department to make this determination? Or do you simply not believe it because you don't want to pay it? This is a serious question.

Wouldn't it be nice if I could tell my satellite provider I won't be paying the full bill because I don't believe what I watched was worth that much. Or I shave 20% off my electric bill because I don't believe it really cost that much to generate the power I used. Not because I know anything about what Dish's expenses are or how much it costs to generate power, but because I simply don't believe it, and that should trump what someone who is actually in a position to know tells me.

Percy I hope that you

Percy I hope were one of the 18 who attended. You are exactly right about the very poor attendance at the town meeting. If you don't vote don't, then you can't complain.
