Lewiston police follow a trail of blood up Ash Street in Lewiston on Thursday night. A man was taken to the hospital by ambulance from the corner of Walnut and Shawmut streets. Police had the corner of Ash and Howard streets blocked off with crime-scene tape.

Shortly before 7 p.m., police were called to the corner of Ash and Howard streets for a fight. Minutes later, witnesses said, a man was seen stumbling down Howard before collapsing a few blocks away on Walnut Street.

That man was taken to Central Maine Medical Center. Police, meanwhile were searching along Ash and Howard streets, following trails of blood while searching for other victims and potential suspects.

Most witnesses in the area reported seeing nothing of significance: They heard some yelling, they said, followed by several people running away and seconds later, police arriving from all directions.

By 7:30 p.m., police had cordoned off a section of the street at the corner of Ash and Howard. Several officers were searching between buildings while others were speaking with neighbors.

A witness said one of the combatants might have run into an apartment house on Ash Street as police were arriving, although that could not be verified.

Later Thursday night, police said there were two victims as a result of the scrap, but there was no further information about the condition of the men.

A Lewiston police detective was called to investigate and was interviewing witnesses late Thursday night.

There have been quite a few

There have been quite a few stabbings recently without a doubt. Just read previous issues of the SJ and you'll find them. Just imagine--pretty soon, we will be asked to turn in our knives in exchange for "Twinkles."

I am not doubting their has

I am not doubting their has been stabbings. But look at the articles, almost all of them were people that knew one another, not a random stabbing..

A person wasn't just waiting on Pine Street for someone to walk by, and then stab them.

These are issues every city faces. People are going to get mad at one another, whether you're in Lewiston, or Detroit. People are unfortunately going to attack one another over disputes, it happens every where, not just Lewiston.

I have walked the city after

I have walked the city after 9PM a few times, and what do you know? I'm still here. I can gladly report that I have not been attacked, stabbed, shot, or something horrific.

Of course their will always be disputes between people. Sometimes people become more physical than others. In my walks, and other people I know who have walked after sunset, we do not see people who are just trying to start trouble with us just for the sake of it. To dismiss Lewiston as being a safe city to walk after 9PM based off the actions of a few people, is wrong.

We read about confrontations, usually it's some sort of domestic dispute. I don't read many articles about people being randomly attacked on the streets of Lewiston.

The Sun Journal, nor the Police Department obviously have all the details at this point with this current situation. Maybe we will find out it was a random stabbing, the suspect randomly attacked the victim as he was walking by.

I'm not sure of any recent attacks, where someone that was walking through Kennedy Park, or down Lisbon Street, or Ash Street, or wherever you want was randomly attacked, stabbed, or raped. Even if that has happened, I don't understand how you can let it prevent you from walking around your town.

Do we allow the terrible tragedies such as the shooting in Newtown, CT from going to school?

Or, the shooting at a Aurora, CO movie theatre prevent us from going to see a movie? I think not.

At the time this was taken place I was at the Mayors debate at the library and the two men running for office were asked if Lewiston was a safe place to take a walk after 9:00PM. Both said it was very safe! What a joke!

Odds are it was very safe for you to walk in the area....

Simply let the two idiots fight it out, and don't bother preaching to them.

There are two or three

There are two or three streets in Lewiston I wouldn't walk in broad daylight without......
