J. Baird: Washington in a mess

On Channel 13 recently there was a gentlemen, John Joyal from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, who stated he was upset that he had been "sequestered" after working there for 37 years.

I have news for Mr. Joyal — the public is supposed to do as President Obama says. Does anyone doubt me? A headline on a Washington Post story, printed by the Sun Journal Oct. 18, said that although Republicans may not love Obama, they would be wise to fear him.

Are we supposed to fear the president?

How about Obamacare? If people don't get health insurance they can be fined. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't feel that is the American way.

Officials in Congress say the nation is broke, so why do lawmakers continue to give money away to countries that hate us?

Congress has been helping itself to Social Security money for years in the name of "helping the people of America." But I know better.

Does anyone worry that, in January, Congress will shut down again? There has to be someone in the United States who is better than who we have in Washington now.

Judy Baird, Lewiston

A good leader.

The thing with a good leader is that he may have different ideas but when he's done talking to you he will have made you think that you came up with his idea. See that is where Obama fails. Ronald Regan and Bill Clinton both were successful because they could listen and talk with you and when they were done people felt they each got something. They could bring people together. When you say something like" we will not negotiate " maybe so but that is not going to get you very far.

No one should be worshiping anyone in politics.......

This is one misconception, usually spread by those who, for whatever reason, disagree with the other side. No one worships anyone just because they support a particular direction a politician may be heading. We elected a person to do a job. it's a job which is needed, and extremely important to the public at large.
We elected a person because we approved his policies, we liked the direction his ideas would take us. We didn't elect the other guy because we didn't like the direction his ideas would take us.
Unfortunately, the opposing side had predetermined that they would force the policies, we intentionally rejected, on us anyway. As a result, by rejecting these unwanted policies, we are now the enemy. In their minds, we are "worshiping the president", because we are rejecting them, again. They just won't take no for an answer.............................

If kneeling in the direction

If kneeling in the direction of Washington DC, arms extended, palms up is not worship, what is?

Right on, Judy. I wish there

Right on, Judy. I wish there were more like yourself unafraid to speak about Obama and government atrocities Unfortunately, many Americans are "sheeples" and really believe "Commander-in-Chief" is another word for God. Oh, let us bow down to thee, oh fearless leader no matter what you do up front and behind our backs!

I think you'll find...

...the sequester was a by-partisan effort pushed through by both inept parties who had no clue about creating a budget. They later proved they had no clue about creating a budget and still do not. The result: we go through this all over again in three months. The sequester had nothing to do with the president.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

Whose idea?

Think about that again Bob...by.

"Some of the most detailed reporting on sequestration is from Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward and his book The Price of Politics. Woodward’s reporting shows clearly that defense sequestration was an idea that came out of Obama’s White House."

Boy, do I hate to admit it, everyone, but....

Mr. Gravel is right! I clicked on the link he gave above and it opened up a page originating from Tampa Bay, Florida. However, to his comments suggesting that he knows better than everyone else in Maine at least, Mark Gravel is an inventor from Roseville, California with several patents to his name. So, he has to be smart about something, just not every subject he would like you to believe!

So what is to become of St Joseph's - a pile of rotten timber?

Brian Franck's picture

I don't know!

But be assured, the timber used in building St. Joseph's Church is not rotten. It will probably outlast either you or I, and perhaps Paul St. Jean as well! As for the rest, we will have to take a "wait and see" approach.

Of course...

A few things

First off, just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't make them "sheeple". People can look at the same data and come to very different conclusions.

Also, you're not helping your cause buy accusing people of worshipping Obama. Matter of fact, most people think those attacking Obama are a little nuts because you equate supporting the President with worshipping him or some other hyperbole. So take a deep breath. Use rational terms for why you disagree with Obama's policies, and understand that while you may feel very strongly about things, people may disagree and you will not convince them you're right by turning up the rhetoric.
