New high-end alpine ski shop opens in Bethel

BETHEL —  A new alpine-based ski shop recently opened for the season on Route 2 between Bethel and Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry.

Sport Thoma is an 8,300-square-foot store at 288 Mayville Road. It is owned by Peter and Nancy Kailey, a Sunday River founding family. The Kaileys also own five Sport Thoma Ski & Snowboard Shops in New Hampshire. The Bethel store marks their Maine debut.

The full-service rental and retail shop features:

* A stand-alone retail sales room.

* A race room-specialized service, including ski tuning, that caters to the local alpine racing community.

* Gravity Jones Orthotic Fabrication, a high-end, boot-fitting and orthotics service owned and operated by Adam Greenier, a 1994 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington's Ski Industries program.

The store is also a dealer for Holmenkol Wax, both for the recreational skiing and specialized racing communities, Leigh Breidenbach, general manager, said Thursday.

"We don't mix it altogether. We're not Marden's," Breidenbach said.

Fall hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday. Once the Newry ski resort opens, however, Breidenbach said the Bethel store will be open seven days a week, starting at 8 a.m. in the midweek and at 7 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The rental and Best Tunes services will be open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

For more information, contact Breidenbach at 824-2266 or visit www.sportthoma.com.

A Main-Land Project

We worked on this project. Great location, great business, and I truly enjoyed working with Mr. Kailey. We love to see a business growing!

The one located in Newry.

This is a good thing Mr. Steve Dosh. As a Newryite, We are glad that a local boy has returned to invest his business in the area. His Dad and a group of Bethelites had a vision of a Ski Hill on a mountain in Newry. The rest is history. I support Sunday River.
Drop by for a visit the next time you are Stateside, you will be impressed.
