Mike Michaud announces he's gay

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine.

PORTLAND  — A six-term congressman and former paper mill worker hoping to unseat Maine Gov. Paul LePage next year announced that he's gay — a response to what he called a "whisper campaign" by political opponents hoping to weaken his gubernatorial bid.

Rep. Mike Michaud's statement: Yes, I am gay. ‘But why should it matter?’

More coverage: Michaud's view on same-sex marriage has evolved

Rep. Mike Michaud, 58, wrote in an op-ed that "whisper campaigns, insinuations and push-polls" attempted to get voters to question whether he's gay.

"Allow me to save them the trouble with a simple, honest answer: 'Yes I am. But why should it matter?'" he wrote in the op-ed published Monday.

The Democrat's announcement adds intrigue to a tight three-way race with LePage, the Republican incumbent, and wealthy independent Eliot Cutler.

A poll released in October suggested Michaud is about even with LePage. Cutler, who finished second to LePage in the 2010 election, is touting himself as a better alternative in a state where unenrolled voters comprise the largest voting bloc.

Michaud didn't identify who he thinks was behind the alleged whisper campaign against him. His campaign has not previously raised the issue.

Michaud's announcement could help him among liberals who may be giving Cutler a look, but more importantly, it diffuses the topic of his sexuality, said Sandy Maisel, a political science professor at Colby College. "He's demonstrated his intent to be open and to take the high road," he said.

Across the country, gay and lesbian candidates are making strides.

There are currently 538 non-straight candidates currently in office in the U.S., and those include a U.S. senator and a half-dozen members of the U.S. House, according to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which aims to increase the number of openly gay leaders at all levels of government. Currently there are no gay governors.

For his part, Michaud downplayed the significance of his announcement.

"That may seem like a big announcement to some people. For me, it's just a part of who I am, as much as being a third-generation mill worker or a lifelong Mainer. One thing I do know is that it has nothing to do with my ability to lead the state of Maine," Michaud wrote.

Born in a Millinocket, he worked in the Great Northern Paper Mill in East Millinocket when he launched his career in the Legislature. In Washington, he has focused on veteran's issues and considers himself a conservative Democrat, part of the "Blue Dog" caucus.

The son and grandson of mill workers, Michaud said he's never forgotten where he came from.

"Most of all, I was brought up believing you should judge a person based on the content of his or her character, not by their race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. That's a value I know most Mainers share," he said.

Michaud, who never has married, said he never liked to talk about himself but wants people "to know that I am not ashamed of who I am." A spokesman declined to say if he's in a relationship.

"And if seeing someone from my background, in my position openly acknowledge the fact that he's gay makes it a little bit easier for future generations to live their lives openly and without fear, all the better," Michaud wrote.

If elected, he wouldn't be the first gay governor. New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey announced in 2004 that he was gay, making him the first openly gay governor. Nor is Michaud the first gay candidate. In Maryland, an openly gay candidate, Democrat Heather Mizeur, is running for governor.

Mike Michaud Gay - So what!

In response to several commenters: Mike Michaud is a career politician and a mill worker. Might I say, a Union mill worker. Big Democratic party support right there!

I know he has done alot for the veterans, but I don't want to go back to the baldacci years of spend, spend, spend and someone who is backed by Unions.

He didn't come out with this now because of little whispers. That is just an excuse to bring this up for the people of GLBT communities. Homosexuality is such a big issue now, that no one in any campaign is going to make this an issue and thus won't be a distraction. If anyone tries to make anything of it, then they are going to come back and say that they have prejudicial issues with his sexual orientation.. Nope, this was done to gain another avenue of support from the GLBT voters. It was purely political.

I didn't read in the article it was the other party leaking this stuff. Don't forget the democrats are very good at leaking crap. Just look at your own party in the White House.

For the commenter who made the comments on Lepage. Go read the article from a couple of weeks ago in this paper and then go in and read the 8 chapters of articles and see what Lepage has done for human rights issues and the state. Go in and read how he worked in a bipartisan effort with a democratic leader on women and children's abuse issue. Read how this democratic politician gave him kind words for his leadership on this.

For all those that think this is going to be a campaign issue and you can't wait to see what LePage and Cutler fall on their face with this. Wait and see. You are going to see that they will say "It has nothing to do with how he will govern".

I

There's been a whisper campaign

about Suzie-Q Collin's sexual preference too and it's so funny how she married her long time friend & business partner! It would be nice if she was honest for once in her life. She is so deceptive in everything she does and everything she does is for political reasons. Hell, even her voting is deceptive because it's given her a "moderate" label, when really, she spent 80% of her time voting for Bush's foreign policies and 88% of the time voting for Bush's financial policies (both of which are still reeking havoc on our nation's debt total!)!

Collins has no integrity. Mike Michaud does. MICHAUD ALL THE WAY! Down with LePlague and UP WITH THE CORRECT MEDICINE FOR MAINE!

DONALD FERLAND's picture

While I may appreciate the

While I may appreciate the work done to strengthen domestic violence issues, I feel Governor LePage is the wrong role model for the issue. Most abusers start as bullies with the do it my way on no way attitude. He is a prime example of someone who tries to control others and at what expense?

FRANK EARLEY's picture

If there's anything detrimental to this State................

If there's anything detrimental to this State, it's not whether Mike Michaud is gay or not. It would be four more years of LePage's destruction. Maine couldn't stand four more years of destroying the economy. We need healthcare reform, and we need bipartisan team work. This dictator like approach from LePage has got to stop. It serves no purpose. Come to think of it, LePage serves no purpose...........

Jane Ryerson's picture

Just like your democratic

Just like your democratic President and Senate is doing in Washington. Telling everyone what they can and can't have for healthcare. No thank you. Someone who just votes party lines and is not interested in the people they represent is not someone we need here in Maine.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Oh Please

Telling everyone what they can and can't have for healthcare.?????

The same as the House and LePage saying that others can't have heath care or state exchanges....your head feel off, don't bother trying to pick it up just kick it.

Fred Stone's picture

News?

It didn't take an article in the newspapers to figure that out, it's been obvious all along.

MICHAEL LEBLANC's picture

I'm shocked!

Shocked, I tell you, at the number of people who are surprised and/or think this matters to most Mainers. What really matters is that, in Congress, Mike has been a back-bencher who does what he's told 95% of the time. What really matters is, as governor, Mike would oversee a return to Baldacci-style profligate spending, all the while whining that obstructionist Republicans prevent the tax hikes to pay for it.

Kim Waite's picture

Mike

you do realize that the local/state/federal government cannot KEEP our tax money, right? They have to spend it! Otherwise, each would be a kingdom upon itself where the king/queen keeps the money and gives out scraps to only a few a the top. All tax money paid in must be paid back to The People in various forms.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

who does what he's told 95% of the time.

Back that up with some facts Mikey?

MICHAEL LEBLANC's picture

No thanks, Jer-Jer.

Refute it yourself. You seem to have a lot of time on your hands inside your nutshell.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

LOL

Eric LeBlanc's picture

I appreciate the honesty Mike but

I appreciate the honesty Mike but unfortunately your lifestyle choice and pro abortion stance will preclude me from voting for you in the gubernatorial election.

Kim Waite's picture

Michaud is MORALLY AGAINST ABORTION

BUT.....he cannot in good conscience be the final word on what a woman chooses to do for herself. He believes it's UP TO THE WOMAN TO CHOOSE OR NOT CHOOSE THIS OPTION FOR HERSELF.

Get it right, Eric. Stop spreading lies.

Eric LeBlanc's picture

She made her choice

She made her choice when she decided to spread her legs. Time to be a big girl and woman up. There's no need for these women to add murderer to their already tarnished resume.

Truth

If he is just coming out now he has not been truthfull to his voting public for the last 12 years. Hard to beleive a politician not telling us the truth. Let's not encourage secrets. Vote Lepage or Cutler

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

12 years, 12 days or 12 minutes ago what does it matter?

If he is just coming out now he has not been truthful to his voting public for the last 12 years. ??????

What if it was did he not meet your timeline qualifications of coming out? Didn't know that was a disqualifier or not for keeping his personal life out of it until now....

ERNEST LABBE's picture

Who cares about his

Who cares about his sexuality? He is a career politician, who once worked in a paper mill. The last thing we need is another lifelong politician.

FRANK EARLEY's picture

I wouldn't care if..........

I wouldn't care if he turned blue, and started chasing smurfs ,around. As long as his name isn't LePage...............

Jack Kaubris's picture

kudos to Mike

He has always been there for the working man and the great Middle class....this changes nothing. He has my vote.

MARK GRAVE's picture

Really, who the hell cares

Really, who the hell cares which way he swings! This is a non-issue, so why did Michaud go public. Perhaps he is trying to make this a political issue, gain support of the HBT voter?

No matter how he slices it, he is trying to gain political support; I guess just a generalized form of the victim mentality.

My advice for Michaud is to focus on state governance rather than his sexuality.

FRANK EARLEY's picture

All he's doing is......

All he's doing is simply beating his opponents to the punch. Everyone knows that in any fair race. As soon as things start looking bad for say, the Republicans in the race. Nothing is sacred anymore. I mean look at what they've been trying to inflict on the President since he's been in office. Look at the damage they have caused to this country in the name of "saving money". All they need is an idea, it doesn't need to be accurate, it just has to look or sound incriminating. Sportsmanship is not a word in the Republican vocabulary. Lets face it, their idea of investigating a source, is going ahead and releasing something and waiting to see if anyone complains.
All Mike Michaud did was release a statement that he was gay. We all know, had the LePage people released it, it would have been hyped to the rafters. Given the fact that Republicans enjoy repeating their juicy stuff as often as possible, we would be hearing about it non stop for years to come. Somehow there would be a conspiracy thrown in to boot.
No, I'm glad Mike did it the way he did it. Now we can just concentrate on good ol fashioned mud slinging.............

Jason Theriault's picture

I dunno - isn't that what he's doing?

"My advice for Michaud is to focus on state governance rather than his sexuality."

I think that's what he is doing. Getting it out there before the race heats up, and it becomes a distraction. I think it's a good idea. And I don't think he is taking the victim role yet. It all depends on how LePage and Cutler react.

CLAIRE GAMACHE's picture

It's a wash

I think this will result in some Michaud supporters switching to Cutler and some Cutler supporters switching to Michaud. I cannot imagine values voters switching to Lepage. After all where in the New Testament does it say that we should add to the misery of the poor and the sick because they are lazy? And where does it say we should worship guns and greed. The only values he supports are closer to the Klan version of Christianity than anything in the New Testament. I don't think anybody can belong to both those clubs at the same time. Personally, I think the independent and democratic vote will swing wildly for anybody who is close to or ahead of Lepage in the polls during the last weeks of the election. Nothing is more important than getting him out of there. What is sad is that this issue will successfully replace the Maine economy and a functioning government as the top priorities in campaign discussions. I guess that was the point of the push polling..

CAROLYN LIBBEY's picture

Well said. Governator

Well said. Governator Lepage--the Grand Wizard perhaps?

I think you've got it

I think you've got it backwards, value voters are in Lepages camp.

MARK GRAVE's picture

No progress is not an EBT

No progress is not an EBT card, but an EBT card and MaineCare is progress toward fiscal slavery ;-)

Kim Waite's picture

Progress to the Maine GOP

is going BACKWARDS. They don't know how to go forward. Hell, they even want American's to adhere to slavery again! Pathetic. Anyone voting for a republican is a person who is an inbred neanderthal!

MARK GRAVE's picture

Do you mean forward into

Do you mean forward into fiscal ruin? Do you know that all those government programs are akin to slavery? You must do what the government says to get your silver of benefits. The government will tell you what healthcare service you can or cannot have. You will be a slave to those programs, drop to your knees, face Washington DC, arms extended, palms up begging. That is pretty humiliating in my opinion.

KATHRYN PENDLETON's picture

Not

That there's anything wrong with that. LePage still has my vote!

Claudette Therriault's picture

It should not be an issue

But, I see from some comments here that bigotry is alive and well. I don't think it's a political ploy. He needed to announce it now, so his opponents won't make it a last minute issue.

Let's focus on what needs to happen to make Maine a better place and not sexual orientation..

Bob White's picture

How many times did he run for

How many times did he run for Congress? But now he has to come out... Interesting

making Maine a better place

making Maine a better place is lower taxes and jobs, not more people on welfare.

Lower taxes?

You mean less money coming in to pay the bills? Is that how YOU balance your checkbook? You reduce your hours at work or take a cut in pay?????

MARK GRAVE's picture

Solution: Cut spending. You have to power to change how you spend and hence create the bills.

That is, unless taxpayer dollars is your source of income. Well, you can cut your spending too. Hey, a universal solution - cut spending.

Bruce Lovett's picture

So sad...

It kills me that sexual orientation is even an issue still. It doesn't have any effect on his ability to lead and steer Maine back in the right direction. People afraid he's gonna redecorate the Blaine and State House? Oh shucks! Not like they don't need a facelift!

MARK GRAVE's picture

In this day and age,

In this day and age, sexualtiy is mostly a non-issue in elections. Michaud is outing himself purely for political reasons, nothing more.

Michaud wants some of that

Michaud wants some of that flaming homosexuall money frm out of state

It was reported yesterday,

That this issue (his issue) was coming out from others of the opposite parties that were investigating the fact and so he stated he was staying ahead of the curve before it got out in a twisted attack.

So in a way it was a politically motivated venture, because of the attacks forth coming from the LePage and the Repubs trashers..

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

How many times has he run for Congress? All of a sudden people are wondering......

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Holy mooly

I didn't know there was a time line for coming out, since the election is ONLY 1 year out.
A lot of other stuff will be out to, will that be too soon and early for you also?

Maybe he just decided to venture into this lifestyle a week, a month maybe 6 months ago....Next time we will have them fill that out in their declaration to running to meet your timeline of expectations.

He must of just planned it, because it was something he wanted to get off his chest....or maybe there was some insinuations and chatter going on like he said and wanted to stay ahead of the rumor mill.

Maybe he was just waiting for your permission when he could...

I like Mike!

I've worked side by side with Mike at many veteran and fund raiser functions for years. His personal life has never been an issue with me, the cause he was championing was always the issue.
If Mike's skin was green, he spoke only in gibberish and walked on crutches my opinion of his ability to lead this state wouldn't change. His sexual orientation is not even a minor distraction, except for writing this comment, but it will be a major distraction for those Lepage/Cutler supporters who would make it so.
Mike has served our 2nd District with honor, distinction and dedication to us who have elected him. As our governor Mike's ability to think things through, arrive at decisions that benefit the people of Maine and especially his honesty are what matters to me.

Jason Theriault, why would you automatically think it was LePage? LePage has always been open with his feelings and is not afraid to speak them aloud. I would more than likely believe this is Cutlers doing.

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

I'd be less surprised to find

I'd be less surprised to find out it was leaked by a democrat as a means of solidifying the gay vote.

Jason Theriault's picture

Not blaming LePage

First off, I wasn't blaming LePage. But I can't imagine a situation where I was going to vote for LePage. No, my vote was going to Michaud or Cutler.

Now, if this was Cutler, he would absolutely lose my vote.

Mark Elliott's picture

I agree Robert...this is how

I agree Robert...this is how left wing socialists play and Michaud and Cutler are BOTH left wing socialists......they will eat each other up in the campaign.

Jason Theriault's picture

Intresting

My initial reaction is I don't know how this plays. Personally, I think it makes me more likely to vote for Cutler. The reason is that I don't care if he's gay, but if LePage and Michaud make the campaign about a referendum on homosexuality, I'm going to go with the candidate not involved.

Kyle Wilson's picture

shurring up the party base

I agree that this was a political stunt but it won't hurt him in the slightest. Anybody opposed to gay people probably wouldn't have voted for him anyway because most voters vote based on the party system and democrats are known to support "gay" initiatives. "Coming out" will probably assist him by making other gay people around the state feel as though they have a bigger stake in this election though it would mostly be a symbolic victory for them if he were to win. That will likely result in more gay Michaud supporters going to vote and may peel a few voters away from Cutler's campaign. This would, however be political suicide if Michaud were a conservative candidate. Out of curiosity's sake, does anybody know of a homosexual conservative who's ever been successful?

Chuck Masselli's picture

Ability

What does his being gay have to do with his ability to govern? Maine would certainly give itself a black eye if they shot him down for being gay, when they have voted for gay rights! I believe he made the announcement before he was found out and thought to be hiding it. Then it would really become an issue! He did the right thing. Oh...and I am not a democrat.

MARK GRAVE's picture

His sexuality is a non-issue;

His sexuality is a non-issue; therefore, he should stick to discussing issue relavent to state governance.

LePage will come out ahead on this issues if he dismisses Michauds outing with saying "What does this have to do with governing the state? Michaud would do better focusing on solving state problems rather than discussing his sexuality, which is a non-issue."

DANNY FITZSIMMONS's picture

So what??

I would rather have a gay guy than a foot in mouth in the Blaine house. And I would rather Michard be our next governor than a person responsible in part like so many others who thought their pockets were more important than the people of the united states by sending jobs overseas, these are the people responsible for the problems of today. if we had jobs for our people there would be no welfare issue, there would be no Social Security issue and even such things as suicide, and depression would be much lesser if there were enough jobs to go around yet that is just not the case because our jobs were sent overseas by such people who felt their own interests were of more important that their own country!

and he is historically part of the problem we have here in Maine. Time for him to go! He never had my vote anyway.

Being involved with the GOP

Being involved with the GOP personally, I can say I NEVER heard this "whisper campaign" he speaks of........ Just another tactic of the left. Appeal to voter emotions rather than logic.

Get off it, your hearing or reading is lacking hugely

I could give you 10 fold of Michele Bachmann, Steve King and many many others like her with attacks of homo sexuality as therir focus. From Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer and Brian Fisher for starters...

You should come out of the closet yourself some time and turn the lights on and really look, it is all over the GOP map on sexual attacks from the right wing lunatics.

Gay, Straight or Bi he's

Gay, Straight or Bi he's still too liberal for me. If Blue Dawg considered moderate, he's not.
