Portland approves crackdown on disabled parking scofflaws

Troy R. Bennett/Bangor Daily News

Portland will begin handing out $200 fines for people who tamper with or alter their handicap parking passes.

PORTLAND (AP) — The Portland City Council has approved an ordinance that allows parking enforcement officers to issue $200 tickets to drivers who misuse disabled parking placards.

The ordinance approved Monday takes effect in 30 days.

Parking Manager John Peverada estimates his department sees about 50 cases a year of people misusing the placards that hang from the rear-view mirror to either park in spots reserved for the disabled or get free parking at meters.

He tells the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/17CXdnz ) most of the abuse involves people altering the expiration date on a placard or using a relative's placard.

Under current law, only police can issue tickets for improper use of the placards, but the police chief says his officers are too busy dealing with more serious crimes.

About time

See many young users attach placard and run into stores. Portland needs to pay attention at Franklin Towers. Same car there day after day with placard not needed. Auburn Walmart one of the worst place for offenders. Just part of the I am entitled society of today. Fat , lazy and arragent.

It's about time.......

Not only should the police issue hefty fines, I would love it if we could rip people out of their cars by their ears and slap them around a little. They may only see 50 cases of abuse of the placards per year. When your handicapped and need to park, you see many more than 50. It really sucks when you need to go home and try later, just because some idiot couldn't care less...........
