C. Saddlemire: Poorest Mainers being left out

Obamacare has made it possible for millions of Americans to have the affordable health insurance they deserve, and I'm one of them.

During the past two years, while serving on City Council and attending graduate school, I earned very little income and found the most affordable way to maintain some health insurance coverage was a catastrophic plan with Anthem that included a $15,000 deductible and a $175/month premium.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act — aka Obamacare — I was able to switch to Maine Community Health Options for comprehensive coverage, a $200 deductible, and a premium of only $42 per month.

But the lowest income earners in this state are being left out in the cold by Gov. Paul LePage's unjustifiable decision to refuse federal dollars for Medicaid expansion — a key piece of the Affordable Care Act.

I am young, financially stable, and have been served well by the president's plan. The poorest Mainers must not be left out in the cold during this historic effort to expand health insurance coverage throughout the nation.

If the same opportunity that I have received isn't expanded to low-income earners, the effect will be devastating for their individual livelihoods and crippling for Maine's economy.

The governor should do the right thing and expand Medicaid.

Craig Saddlemire, Lewiston

All of the madeup hype of NO actual substances from the right

Republicans don’t really have a Plan B so they have to make up far fetched lies with half truths or no truths at all.

Have you noticed that all the Republican actor testimony about these alleged horrifying stories never holds water?

Paul Krugman wrote a terrific column on this topic Monday. Literally every high-profile Obamacare-nightmare story retailed by one of these yoyos turns out, once reporters start poking around, not to be at all as advertised.

So we have a party that loathes the ACA and its effects and many millions of dollars to go find its victims, and so far it hasn't really turned up one.

The ducks

So far the ducks are lining up heavily in favor of the Medicaid expansion. Every day a new group petitions the legislature to approve it. So far the AARP, hospitals, doctors, business groups, social workers, mental health workers, school groups, military groups and thousands of citizens have come out in favor. You have to wonder who the folks who are against this are working for. Even the folks who claim this raises their taxes cannot mount a serious objection. The expansion is paid for with federal funds. Refusing the expansion does not put a penny in the Maine taxpayers pocket. The argument that you can't trust the government to pay up is ridiculous. It has paid up for Social Security and Medicare and the VA for years. The only way it won't pay up is if Republicans kill it. And it won't make health care more expensive. It will only relieve the cost of charity care. And we won't be stuck with the bill for the 10% not covered by the feds 3 years from now because the bill on the floor has a sunset provision.

Thank Me. Not obamacare!

Don't thank obamacare, thank me and all the other working folk who are being forced at gunpoint to subsidize your health insurance. If you have the spare time to "Serve" on the city council, you have time to earn enough money to buy your own insurance. But Nooooo! My guess is that every time a proposal to spend other people's money comes up before the council, you "Generously" cast your vote in favor of it.
Keep your hands out of my pocket!

RONALD RIML's picture

Greg -

Forced at Gunpoint?? Got an anchor tied to your azz???

Hop on a plane and head for sunny Saudi Arabia or the Worker's Paradise of the Peoples' Republic of China. Anything's got to be better than the Affordable Health Care Act - Right!!??

Hop to it, Lad!!!

The last time I checked, they

The last time I checked, they through people who don't pay their taxes in jail. (or give them food stamps) That's a gun to my head!

If all us hard working tax payers do leave how will all the layabouts and public pensioners survive? And, since my country's quickly becoming a "Worker's Paradise" why would I commute?

Careful what you ask for.

Careful what you ask for. How would the sponges survive if the producers all got up and left. The left won't be able to be so generous with other peoples money.

Food Stamps: Military Families Redeem $100 Million A Year In SNAP Benefits

6% of SNAP households included a child, an elderly person, or a disabled person. These vulnerable households receive 83% of all SNAP benefits

The average SNAP household has a gross monthly income of $744; net monthly income of $338 after the standard deduction and, for certain households, deductions for child care, medical expenses, and shelter costs; and countable resources of $331, such as a bank account.

True Repub logic; starve the Vets, their families, the poor, the elderly , the children and the disabled just so they can't have a better life, survive and let them die, and make it all about me.....

All because Faux Noise brainwashes you and simple minded others, that some do abuse it...So in your illustrious deductions, Lets just sacrifice the many for the few who make it bad for others...true repub/Tbagger illogical BS..

Throw People in Jail for not Paying Taxes?????

Hell, they make you a Millionaire!!!!!

Almost 1,500 Millionaires Do Not Pay Income Tax

Taxes are for us 'Little People"

The Kennedys and their ilk

The Kennedys and their ilk will always be able to avoid paying taxes and there's not a lot we can do about it. But if you're making over $67K, you're in the top 25% of earners, and your paying 90% of the Fed income tax. When do the people shouldering the load get to say "Enough already, help yourself" and not to any more of my money?

And if you can't afford Kennedy quality attorneys, they will throw you in the Hoosegow!

RONALD RIML's picture

Your Money????

I looked at both U.S. Federal Reserve Notes in my wallet, and neither one of them had anyone's name on them but the President whose likeness was on the note, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Treasurer of the United States.

But I reckon I could print your name on them if it would make you feel good.

Is that Greg - or Gregory????

No no. No need to go to all

No no. No need to go to all that trouble. Wouldn't want a lefty to have to work for any money. I'll just work a little harder and earn some more for you.

Well I thank both you and

Well I thank both you and your brother for your service. But the only people looking to cut military benefits are progressives.
I'm all for increasing military benefits, greatly! Both for active and retired.
I'm also for cutting benefits for those that won't work. In many cases it has become a generational thing. Shame on us for encourage that!
How about drug testing for those on welfare. (No, I'm not saying everyone on welfare is a druggy) If a junky asked you for money for a fix, you wouldn't give it to him. But we enable druggies every day. Again, shame on us!

And as for being a coward... Really? Are both you and Ron such tough guys that you can't get in a little website discussion and not judge someone that you've never met, a coward? I'm done.
Open your eyes, your country's going down the tube and you're pushing it!

RONALD RIML's picture

"The only people looking to cut military benefits

are progressives.?" You obviously weren't there.

Whoever or Whatever gave you THAT idea?? The biggest and best boost ever in military pay and benefits came under the leadership of Democratic House Armed Forces Chairman L. Mendall Rivers. This from Wikipedia.

- By the time Rivers became the chairman, he was well known for being a strong supporter of the American military in general, and of enlisted military service members in particular. In 1963 he established, through the vehicle of the House-Senate Conference Committee, the principle of linking military retired pay to increases in the Consumer Price Index, similar to the practice for retired federal civil servants. In 1964 he championed the cause of "hospital rights," guaranteeing medical care in military hospitals for military retirees and their dependents. After becoming chairman, he helped secure the first military pay raise since 1952 in 1965 despite opposition from the Secretary of Defense McNamara and President Johnson. Rivers was instrumental in establishing the additional enlisted pay grade of E-9, and he helped secure mobile home allowances and cheap air fares for soldiers returning from Viet Nam.[15] Rivers was greatly admired by the soldiers and they would repay his strong support by their adulation. They felt that he was their congressman and called him the "Serviceman's Best Friend."[31] A road in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam was called the Mendel Rivers Parkway[27] and the soldiers gave Rivers a captured Viet Cong carbine that he prominently displayed in his office. For obtaining drastically reduced air fares for soldiers on furlough, they gave him a cap with six stars and "The Big Boss" inscribed on it, indicating that Rivers outranked all military officials.[32]
After his death, the Navy honored his dedication by naming the submarine USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686) in his honor in 1971.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Billions of dollars in U.S. taxes are going unpaid because Americans are exploiting Swiss bank accounts, and the U.S. government has failed to aggressively pursue Switzerland's second-largest bank, a Senate investigation has found.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Take off your rose tinted glasses Greg

"""But if you think it's just Republicans you're wrong.""""????

Who protects the RICH again?????

Republicans who oppose taxing the nation's wealthiest at higher rates saying it might be time to start taxing the working poor and elderly.

After all, those are the very groups that don't pay income taxes.

But the majority of our "freeloading" households have incomes of $40,000 a year or far, far less.
According to a new report from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center in Washington, about 46 percent of American "tax units" — don't you love wonk jargon? — will not pay any income taxes in 2011. (They will, of course, pay state and local taxes and sales taxes, and many will pay payroll taxes.)

There are good reasons for the "nontaxable" status of so many Americans. Some are so poor, they avoid liabilityunder standard income tax provisions. (About 44 million Americans were living below the government-set poverty line by 2009, according to census figures.)

Forty-four percent of "tax units made nontaxable by tax expenditures" are elderly citizens living on benefits and taking the credits they are allowed under the tax code because of age and income.

Another 33 percent receive credits for being among the working poor and for having children.

Some of the rest of the "tax units made nontaxable by tax expenditures" make higher salaries but use education and various other credits and deductions to avoid tax liability.

And yet Republicans suggest that they need to pay "their fair share." Mitt Romney made the point recently in New Hampshire, according to The Wall Street Journal, and Ms. Bachmann told a crowd in South Carolina in July:

"Part of the problem is today, only 53 percent pay any federal income tax at all; 47 percent pay nothing. We need to broaden the base so that everybody pays something, even if it's a dollar."

Fox said so.....according to you...but FACTS say differently

Maybe they support Obama now since they paid Romney $37.1 million and the right wing agenda was a huge failure and they hedged their bet on the wrong side.
President Barack Obama called Wall Street executives "fat cats,'' criticized their bonuses and tried to raise their taxes. The financial-services industry, in turn, has directed a stream of complaints toward the administration, fueling perceptions of a rift between the president and a key 2008 donor group.

But, defying expectations, the securities and investment industry has remained an important part of the Obama fundraising effort. Mr. Obama and the Democratic National Committee raised more than $14 million from the securities and investment industry through the end of April,

The Kennedy's??? They are MASS-Holes.. This is Maine!!!!

Damn, Greg. You should get out of L/A and see how Mainers along the coast live. Not too freakin bad!

So shoulder the 'Load' in Lewiston-Auburn if that is all you are capable of. Or you could relocate to the coastal areas and stick the 'Folks from Away' for what you think you are really worth.

Obviously you're not worth much - sitting back there pizzing, moaning, and taking up space.

There's some real $$$ to be made off the summer folks who have those fancy homes along the coast - enough to get people through the winter. Luckily I'm retired now and don't have to.

RONALD RIML's picture

How noble.

The ACA desperately needs several million more like you, Mr. Saddlemire, to pay those low premiums to subsidize coverage for those less fortunate (older) than you. If that were happening, ObamaCare would blanket all media 24/7 with gushing reports. So it's not happening, and the numbers they do release are inflated with those who sign up for Medicare and, yes, Medicaid.

I just went to the website for Maine Community Health Options, said I was 36 making $30,000/year, and learned that a gold plan with $650 deductible is $300/month. Evidently this fictitious Mainer is more "stable" than you and is expected to cough up much more to help the less stable.

I'm not a geezer and my daughter is definitely not a geezer. I live on SSDI and Medicare, my daughter and her soon to be husband have purchased insurance. The first time for both of them. He has a good job and she works two jobs and is a full time student. I couldn't be happier that they now have some sort of protection. At their age and with my daughters college loans to pay off, the last thing they need is unaffordable medical bills. that's what happens after just one hospital stay.
Mike you have way to much anger pushing in the wrong direction. Your only outlet is to slam the system. If people like you did more to help the system and quit your bitching over everything, things might become a little clearer for you. These morons was using Obama Care against the Dems like the 2012 election and we saw how well that worked...but their 2 dimensional thinking is to keep doing the same thing over and over and look to getting a different result...that is proof of insanity....they act like my Dobs, fetch the balsl and bring it back until they tucker and then do it again...
