Feds fine Maine $7 million for not meeting work-to-welfare goals

AUGUSTA — Republican Gov. Paul LePage says Maine faces more than $7 million in federal fines because it's not meeting work participation requirements for welfare recipients.

LePage said Thursday that Maine needed an overall work participation rate of 47.5 percent and 87.5 percent for two-parent families in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program in 2011, but fell far short of that.

He chided Democrats for failing to approve his proposals to overhaul the state's welfare programs this session, which he says would have helped boost Maine's rates.

But Chris Hastedt of Maine Equal Justice Partners says the governor's proposals would have had no impact on whether the state met the participation rate in 2011. She says Maine is now meeting the overall rate, which will help it appeal past penalties.

The solution is easy,

The solution is easy, eliminate TANF, so Maine is not dependent on Federal dollars and the rules they attached to those dollars.

If Maine is smart, it will not take dollars to expand Medicaid. First of all, the money is not free. Second, the money has too many strings attached.

Here he goes again..........

Here he goes again. Trying to blame the missed guidelines in 2011 on not approving his welfare overhaul plan this year. It's nothing but an attempt to gain the casual or non news reading voter by tricking them into believing that these possible fines could have been averted due to his projections. This one is almost laughable. What about the changes that have been made since 2011, and the fact that this year the guidelines were met. Do we really need four more years of this crap???????????

"Do we really need four more

"Do we really need four more years of this crap"

Absolutely yes. Why go back to Detroit style debt spending. Moreover and the best part of it all, he agitates you.

Here it is again

Mary Mayhew and LePage a total failure to Maine...failing to do the job they are both unqualified to continue doing.

Time to vote these useless people out. Repubs are dangerous and an embarrassment to Maine.

I just spoke with my cousin today, who has been a repub all his life until NOW! He is embarrassed by the party and by LePage and his cronies. He has registered as f last month, as an Independent, including his wife and two children and their husbands..

They all will be voting for Michaud, because he also stated that a vote for Cutler is a vote for LePage and that doesn't need to happen.

Wake up Maine, LePage is a cancer on the state.

It's a common pattern. A

It's a common pattern. A friend who tends to run to the libertarian and republican side of things (criticising Snowe and Collins as "RINOs"), big Ron Paul supporter in the last election cycle, etc. Says he will be voting Cutler this time because LePage is an idiot.

JERRY ARIPEZ's picture

Well he and others are

not alone on this same LePage is out, but a vote for Cutler is voting for the LePage, since that was clear from last elction as the spoiler vote...

Considering Cutler was the

Considering Cutler was the second place candidate, I'd say Libby Mitchell was the spoiler last time.

Adding insult to injury!

How much money was it that LePage and Mayhew stole from TANF funds to pay Gary Alexander for absolutely nothing?
How much federal money did Maine lose to fund it's psychiatric center? Wasn't it 40M or something like that?
How many millions has Maine lost by rejecting the ACA and leaving 70,000 Mainers without health insurance?
How much money did we lose by LePage trashing our bond votes in 2010 when interest rates were lower then today?
How many more times is LePage going to be embarrassing us on national TV?
How much legislative time and money has LePage wasted by vetoing every bipartisan bill that landed on his desk?
Everyday it gets worse and worse. Think about this when you vote this November.

Cutting TANF, and peoples throats

LePage wants less for people since it means more for the rich profiteers.......just like Congress beatch Marsha Blackburns commented that "We want more Charter schools to stop the Unions"....she said in NH....

Charter schools for the rich profiteers and it will cost more money to pay off the buyers of education eventually, with the illogical BS of attacking Teachers and unions to mess with teachers past and present pensions, wages and not being able to keep teachers since the job will be not worth staying on!

Repubs selling America and Americans lives, for profit...

True Jerry

Until they become a vice chancellor at the University of Maine and get a $40,000 raise to $205,000 per year because they're "uniquely qualified". (heard that one before?)

MARK GRAVEL's picture

Isn't the chancellor a

Isn't the chancellor a democrat, not a rich republican? So you mean democrats are wastefully spending tax dollars too?

And lastly, better to be uniquely qualified than not qualified for anything but emitting Co2 and methane.
