Baseless allegations

This is in response to the letter from Daniel Cole, "Otten shouldn't run," printed July 14.

It seems that Cole knows of Les Otten, but it is clear that he does not know Les Otten.

Well, I know Les Otten, and I feel that it is important to clear up some of the baseless allegations published in that letter.

Maine Energy Systems of Bethel distributes and manufactures pellet boilers and related support for central heating systems, not stoves. Otten has worked tirelessly the last two years, encouraging Mainers to end dependence on foreign oil and embrace renewable energy.

The materials and workers in the construction of Sunday River were not imported. The lifts, snow-making equipment, the 800 condos and four hotels were almost completely built with local materials and labor. In fact, Otten trained winter ski staffs as carpenters, welders and construction workers to provide year-round employment.

Otten has been a Republican since 1972.

People are entitled to their opinions, but the Sun Journal should be more careful and refrain from publishing statements that have no basis in the truth.

Les Otten would be a great

Les Otten would be a great candidate for the Democrats. Scott: here are just a few of the many non-baseless reports:

His website says it costs $15,300 to buy and install the German Bosch system required (at least double the cost of US-made pellet systems). It would take big government subsidies to get anybody to do it ; source(s) of such subsidies never mentioned. Read between the lines: http://www.bethelcitizen.com/story.php?storyid=6269 "...[Otten] has “a deep belief that government is here to support business, and business wasn’t created to support government — and I think we’ve got it a little bit wrong.” Where did Otten get the $10 million to invest; see below.

"...Otten has declined to comment on whether he would run as a Republican, Democrat or independent. He said he’ll announce his political affiliation at the news conference...." Why?

See what his peers say about him: http://www.mainebiz.biz/news42838.html "...another example of Otten's greatest strength and his greatest weakness - his ambition....";

See esp. "Ups and Downs" -- he raised $265 million in an IPO; then "poof" (just like h is native New Yorkers on Wall Street and AIG execs.): "...By 1997, when Otten raised $265 million in an initial public offering of American Skiing Company, his majority share was valued at $270 million. And then, in an epic stroke of bad luck, a string of warm winters dried up revenue at a number of American Skiing resorts. Burdened by debt from its rapid expansion, American Skiing was never able to recover...." But Otten did.

http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080513/NEWS02/805... Maine Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan, who's also a member of the wood-to-energy task force, wonders if Mainers instead will choose less-costly pellet-burning stoves over central heating systems. "It's going to have to be a hell of a selling job to get people to tear out their oil furnaces and convert," said McGowan. "But I think Les's motto is, go big or go home."

CONCLUSION: Les Otten has shown he's willing to try going big (with other people's money) and, if it doesn't work, he goes home; who loses, if he does this as Governor?

Less Otten as the Republican candidate would help a Democrat win.

Otten has a great business

Otten has a great business mind and brings that to the Governors office. I do not know Les personally but have found the information on his site to be of great value. Since his views on education do not fit to the NCLB acts and rather reinforce a growing economic trend of investing in schools futures and markets then that sets him apart. RINO's are going to hate that though because that means rather then a prior setting of private education they have to reinvest from private to public schools. As an apart from that it is rather shallow though that many have not looked him over. Picked apart his strategies his reliance on not being overly negative but wanting to work the people creates a much better flow and stymies the tend of economic woe in Maine; as well as including several key fixtures into the deepening trend of our over reliance on tourism. The mixtures of jobs brought back into the State, a place to turn toward for public education, and the factors of finding an unsaid "fault" in the NCLB act makes him much more effective.

There are two kinds of Republicans in this world moderate and conservative for so long I've picked the moderate that now it is time to consider the path less traveled.

Thanks Scott for clearing

Thanks Scott for clearing that up. Of course the libs on here will continue to lie and spin against anything or anyone they perceive to be a threat. Now that includes you.
