RUMFORD — People interested in seeking a six-month term on the Board of Selectmen will be interviewed by the board during a workshop at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in the municipal building jury room.
Then, during the board's regular business meeting at 7 p.m., selectmen will appoint someone chosen during that workshop.
The half-year term became available last month when Selectman Robert Cameron resigned due to prior commitments. Cameron, who has 18 months remaining in his three-year term, agreed to serve until after the board's second meeting this month.
Normally held on the second Thursday of the month, that meeting, however, was bumped from Thursday, Nov. 19, to Monday, Nov. 23, by unanimous vote at the board's Nov. 5 meeting.
According to Town Manager Carlo Puiia, the charter states that selectmen can appoint someone to serve six months. Then, that person, if they choose, can run against any other candidates for the remaining one-year term at the June 2010 town meeting.
In other business, selectmen OK'd instituting a winter parking ban either when the first snowstorm arrives or by Dec. 1.
The board also held two executive sessions. The first was about a personnel matter with Puiia, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Parks and Recreation superintendent.
No action was taken after that session.
The second involved a separate personnel matter with Puiia, fire Chief Robert Chase and Mark Tripp, the firefighters' union representative. After exiting that session, Puiia said selectmen unanimously voted 5-0 to deny a Fire Department grievance related to scheduling a vacation schedule.
Puiia said Chase established a vacation policy to reduce overtime and the union filed a grievance.
"If they are dissatisfied with the vote, the union can file for arbitration within 10 days," he added.

Some citizen is going to be seriously hurt or killed as the result or the Selectmen's lack of foresight in providing proper maning of the fire department. We are entering the heating season with a lot of people burning wood and chimney fires spread quickly. With only two men in the station to respond to a fire no action can be taken until call force people and Rumford has few of those left or another department arrives to help. A situation now exists where property damage will be much greater no matter what. Look for your insurance premiums to rise if your policy is not just plain cancelled come renewal time even if you have not had a claim. Rumford is now considered a much higher risk.
