Obama: Don't squander chance to reform health care

President Barack Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama told the nation Saturday his health care overhaul is financially sound, but a new analysis by congressional budget experts of emerging House legislation said it would increase deficits by $239 billion over a decade.

"I want to be very clear: I will not sign on to any health plan that adds to our deficits over the next decade," the president said in his weekly address. "And by helping improve quality and efficiency, the reforms we make will help bring our deficits under control in the long-term," he added.

It was the sixth consecutive day Obama sought to keep the focus on his chief domestic priority in the face of mounting resistance on Capitol Hill, including conservative Democrats. Republicans also renewed their criticism.

The president's remarks were released late Friday, a few hours before an update by the Congressional Budget Office said the overall cost of the House bill would "result in a net increase in the federal budget deficit of $239 billion over the 2010-2019 period." The estimate included the cost of higher Medicare fees for doctors, an important ingredient of the measure for the American Medical Association. The AMA, which represents physicians, endorsed the bill late last week.

The CBO analysis said the bill would result in a reduction in the deficit from 2010-2014, before it began to add red ink in gradually increasing amounts for the next five years.

Administration officials could not be reached for comment immediately.

Despite the estimate, aides at the three House committees working on the bill issued a joint statement saying CBO had said the legislation was "deficit neutral over the 10-year budget window."

It said the $245 billion for increased doctor fees "are not included in the net calculations ... as they will be absorbed under the upcoming statutory 'pay go' legislation that is pending in the House."

It was not immediately clear what they referred to.

Obama has said consistently the current drive for health care could be the last for the foreseeable future if it does not succeed.

"This is what the debate in Congress is all about: whether we'll keep talking and tinkering and letting this problem fester as more families and businesses go under and more Americans lose their coverage," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Or whether we'll seize this opportunity - one we might not have again for generations - and finally pass health insurance reform this year, in 2009."

Through the week, Obama tried to project confidence about his approach to cover millions of uninsured people. During a private meeting with Jewish leaders on Monday, he joked that the only thing more difficult than passing health care legislation might be negotiating Mideast peace.

At a late scheduled White House appearance Friday, he appealed to lawmakers not to "lose heart" and asked for deeper cost cuts to calm concern over the huge expense.

Republicans were not swayed.

"The president and some Democrats insist we must rush this plan through," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. "Why? Because the more Americans know about it, the more they oppose it. Something this important needs to be done right, rather than done quickly."

Two House committees on Friday approved their parts of the bill over Republican objections. That left one more to act. But Democrats facing tough re-election bids or representing conservative districts demanded additional measures to hold down costs.

Sadly enough all, the annointed one seems to be hearing a different tune. I don't know who the hell is singing it, but he sure as hell is hearing it. He's not listening to anyone I know. And Gil, nice observation. You raise a good question that none of the annointed one's minions seem to want to answer. Let's hope and pray that he fails on this one, Please!!!

I'm not sure why everyone is

I'm not sure why everyone is opposed to government run health care. It is not like the government has a bad track record of running things. Look at MediCare, Social Security, and AmTrack. I'm sure most veterans are just pleased with their government run health care. Oh wait, I guess those programs are not run very well.

There are two big reasons

There are two big reasons why the current version of ObamaCare should not get rushed through the review process. They are:
1) ObamaCare will provide free health care for illegal aliens.
2) ObamaCare will use taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions.

Although there are also countless other unanswered questions and concerns with ObamaCare, there is no reason to rush on this important issue. We need major health care reform, but ObamaCare would send us in the wrong direction.

Notice the lack of the brain

Notice the lack of the brain dead lemmings in here supporting this bill and their messiah. That's because they have no argument to raise. They have no defense for this pile of taxes that will destroy the greatest health care system in the world. They know that it is not about health care, the boy king could care less if you have insurance. It's about power. They are not here, because they know better.
"In the history of the nation, there has never been a political party so ridiculous as today's Democrats. It's as if all the brain-damaged people in America got together and formed a voting bloc." Ann Coulter

An open email to Senator

An open email to Senator Snowe and Staff....

Dear Senator Snowe and Staff,
I implore you please not to have your legacy and that of Maine, and as an American tied to the last couple piece of legislation being pushed. No on healthcare reform as it is laid out. Could you stand there and explain to all of us that it is a good reform and that EXEMPTING federal employees and union workers was because??? Explain to all of that we have choice, though you CAN NOT add anybody to your existing policy. Please Senator, do not join this legacy of spending and control.

Thank you,

As a federal government

As a federal government employee I have excellent health benefits likewise Congress. This is done by the government negotiating with insurance companies to keep their prices affordable which is basically the same benefits that the President is proposing for all Americans. I have choices of which insurer I decide to choose. Federal workers would be exempt because they already have those benefits.

Ps- In question to this

Ps- In question to this healthcare plan, why are Federal employees and union workers exempt? Is this not good for all?

Putting ideology aside,

Putting ideology aside, though i don't know if we can. The reason for the inability to put ideology aside seems simple.Truth, as defined in the dictionary, "that which matches final reality". Truth, there seems to more of us that believe government can give us something for nothing. The truth is that the government must first take from you what it would give to me after skimming something off the top. Truth there are too many that want something for nothing. Where are the Americans?? Those that work for what they want? Take responsibility for thier choices and while not happy about..pay the consequences for thier choices. Go to a neighbor or the church in time of need? Not the government...no, truth is , working under self-enlightment, all laws are looked at with the glasses.."do i make out in this deal, do i get something for nothing"...so sad...The government that can give you everything, can also take everything away.."One nation under God" , not one nation under Washington...peace

Indeed, concerns for our

Indeed, concerns for our future are valid when it comes to the counterfeit logic espoused by the provisional Usurper of 1600 Penn. Avenue. B. Hussein Obama says that he will not raise taxes with Obama Jones-aid while pressing Democrats to pass the measure in haste: the same 1018 page measure that includes a $245B tax increase according to the CBO; the same measure that precludes the option to purchase private insurance if not in effect when the law is enacted. Indeed, every time that the sonorous sophomaniac opens his mouth, he produces yet another utterance of corruption and fallacy; his words are steeped in deception, his intentions villainous. Never in my adult life have I been so ashamed for my country; never have the American people been so callously abused by their public officials. Hopefully, a new breed of representatives will rise from the ashes of this terrible injustice and stand firmly against socialism and the enfeeblement of out great Nation.
