Vermont woman charged in Metivier's death

A Vermont woman has been indicted on charges of negligent homicide in connection with a head-on collision that killed her mother and daughter, and a young Lewiston mother on July 3 in New Hampshire.

Diane Silsby, 41, of Lunenburg, Vt., is charged in the deaths of her 83-year-old mother, Leona Dunn, of Lancaster, N.H., and her 15-year-old daughter, Nicole Silsby, who were passengers in Silsby's 2007 Nissan Altima. Silsby is also charged in the death of Rachel Metivier, 26, of Lewiston.

According to police reports, Dunn, Silsby and Metivier were killed when cars driven by Diane Silsby and Christopher Caron, 27, of Lewiston crashed head-on around 5 p.m. on Route 2 in Randolph. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Metivier was a passenger in an SUV driven by Caron. Caron's 3-year-old daughter and Metivier's 6-year-old son were also passengers in Caron's 2000 Ford Explorer.

Both drivers were injured in the crash. Silsby was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and Caron was taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. Caron's daughter was also treated at AVH, and less than a week after the accident all patients were listed in satisfactory condition at their respective hospitals.

At the time of the accident, New Hampshire State Police said neither
alcohol and drugs, nor road and weather conditions appeared to have
been factors.

Silsby is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in Lancaster, N.H.

According to press reports immediately after the accident, the Silsby family had moved to Lunenburg, Vt., from New York four days before the accident after Diane Silsby's husband, Jason, had completed his military career.

Dunn was a native of Harrison, and lived with her husband, Reynold, in Waterford, while raising their 12 children.

The whole accident was an

The whole accident was an unplanned tragedy, I don't know Mrs.Silsby, but I am quite sure she did not get into her car with intentions of any of this happening. Coffeeat8, I agree with you, I am TIPS certified, and I know that a glass of wine puts you at OUI, but that does not mean that you are "drunk". Diane has to wake up every morning of her life and live with this on her conscience, I am sure she is well aware of the hurt that was caused. I truly believe in an eye for an eye, her debt has been paid, who are we to judge. I pray that everyone will someday find peace in their own lives and stop trying to get satisfaction from blaming someone. If Diane does get found guilty, Rachel is still not with us.........
Rachel is my sister of 26 years, and always will be.

When you have to live, for

When you have to live, for the rest of your life, knowing you are responsible for the deaths of 3 people, 1 being your own child, the other being your own mother, and one the young, beautiful, mother of 2 sweet children - being hated, despised by everyone including yourself, I imagine it would be living in hell on Earth. Rachel was clearly a deeply loved, talented, remarkable young woman, to say the least. Her children must ache for her every second of every minute of every day, and no one is suffering more than they, I completely agree. So much suffering at so many levels, and yes - it was all avoidable, which is what makes this all that much more painful. Rachel's children are in our prayers, as is her family.

Excuse me? Silsby is going

Excuse me? Silsby is going through the worst punishment a human can endure?

I got to listen to my little four year old niece cry for her mother, my sister, at the dinner table this Thanksgiving.

I cant comprehend Jason

I cant comprehend Jason Silsbys military career being a point of interest in a drunk driving case..i have no sympathy at all for Mrs. Silsby..none....her incredibly selfish act has destroyed SEVERAL LIVES ..yet she gets to live.......There is something inherently wrong with that .................

We were in the same unit

We were in the same unit with the Silsbys for 3 years at Fort Drum. While you all are busy passing judgment on someone you don't know, let me share what I DO know about this family. In the 3 years we spent time with them, not once did I see a drink touch Diane's lips. Not once. While the rest of us enjoyed a glass of wine, she did not drink. Diane had a wonderful career on post with the Child Development program, and spent her decades as a military spouse supporting other military wives through deployments, and the stresses of military life. Her husband, Jason, is one of the most outstanding SR NCO's we've ever known. A war veteran, he paid his dues on the battlefields in the Middle East. His integrity is second to none, and to top it off - he is an amazing, loving father... and Diane an amazing mother. We cannot begin to imagine their pain through the loss of their beautiful daughter, Nicole, and Diane's mother. We attended Jason's farewell picnic just days before the awful crash. I will never forget his loving words to his wife for all her support over the years, and the way he told Nicole how she was the center of his universe, the light of his life.. and thanked her, too, for being such a wonderful daughter. I don't know what the circumstances were that led to the "alcohol" charge, but think about how many times we've had a glass of wine with dinner or lunch... just a small glass. If we were to get in an accident, we would be "under the influence". We have no knowledge of the details of what happened.. but what we do know is that Diane lost her daughter, her mother, and took the life of another mother - and is in the depths of despair. I'd say she's suffered the worst punishment a human can endure.

What more could be a

What more could be a punishment????? How about lock her up and throw away the key??? And that's just for starters. She lost her family?? Well she obviously didn't care too much about them when she decided to get behind the wheel of her car under the influence of alcohol!! She doesn't deserve to be free in our society where she can kill more people by her stupidity!

Are you kidding me? Rachel

Are you kidding me? Rachel was a good friend of mine all through high school and a great mom. I believe the woman deserves any punishment she gets for this "accident". Rachels children were left without a mom, something they can never get back. Diane Silby made the choice to get behind the wheel when she shouldn't have.
