LEWISTON — A national Muslim civil rights organization has filed a formal request with the Lewiston School Department to allow a middle school student to pray on school property. The group also wants Lewiston to modify existing policy and provide "constitutionally protected religious accommodation," such as a designated prayer room.
The group has also requested the school department institute diversity training for school staff, and to ensure the middle-schooler won't face retaliation because of her request to pray at the Lewiston Middle School.
According to the Washington, D.C.,-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, seventh-grader Nasra Aden had been routinely "praying discreetly during her free time or lunch break in a corner of a school hallway." But, on Tuesday, CAIR asserts a teacher told Aden "never to pray on school property" after Aden was seen preparing to kneel in prayer in a corner of one of the hallways.
After Aden told her mother, Jamad Warsame, what happened, Warsame spoke with school Principal Maureen Lachappelle and asked the school to accommodate her daughter's desire to pray. According to CAIR, Warsame's request was rebuffed and she has been "forced to pick up her daughter every day and take her to a nearby park to pray."
Lachappelle said Aden is not being forced to leave school to pray, but that the district accommodated her mother's request for her to leave the campus this past week for prayer.
Lewiston Superintendent Leon Levesque, who learned of CAIR's written accusations hours after a press release had already been published on various Web sites, said, "Students are free to pray quietly during class if they choose as long as it's not disruptive," because "prayer is constitutionally protected in schools."
"They can pray audibly or silently," and are subjected to the same rules of order as apply to other students in the school. "We have never denied a student's right to pray," he said.
Aden's uncle, Ismail Warsame, who lives in Orono, said Lachappelle and another school official told the family that because the school department "could not provide a room for Muslims to pray, it was against the school policy for anyone to pray."
Lachappelle disputes that was the department's explanation.
Lachappelle said she told Jamad Warsame that the school department cannot provide special prayer rooms for students of any religion, but that "students certainly have a right to pray in school. We know that's their constitutional right."
A lot of kids pray silently in school," Lachappelle said, at their desks before a test or during study hall. "We don't promote prayer and we don't deny" students' right to pray, she said. "We're neutral."
Levesque said that staff is trained to protect the right of students to pray, and he's certain many students do pray unnoticed. The district also allows religious clubs to meet in school buildings before and after school, and that students are permitted to be excused from school for religious holidays.
In a written statement, Ismail Warsame called school officials' alleged actions in responding to Aden's effort to pray "a stunning scenario of lack of multicultural competency" and "clear violation of our constitutional rights to free religious expression."
Warsame also accused Lachappelle of hanging up on him as he was asking whether the school department would accommodate the family's request to accommodate the specific religious needs of certain students. Lachappelle acknowledged she did end a phone conversation with Warsame abruptly because "he wouldn't take no for an answer."
According to Lachappelle, after an involved conversation about the school's position on allowing silent prayer, she said she told Warsame that "this is what the ruling is. We're disagreeing, and I'm following district policy. I feel we need to end this conversation."
CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said Friday that if the Lewiston School Department did not address its four requests to allow prayer, modify school policy, institute training and protect Aden from retaliation, "we wouldn't really have much choice but to take the case further" because "the student has the legal right and the constitutional right to pray in school in a manner that is not disruptive to the learning environment."
Hooper said no one from CAIR spoke to school officials before filing its four-prong request because it is their general practice to file requests and then follow up with schools and other organizations to institute changes.

Skai...thank you for showing the world how much you understand world affairs. I let people to be the judges, but for the rest of you Mainers, happy thanksgiving and I hope everyone enjoys their Turkey with their families. I do not celebrate thanksgiving myself but I am more than respectful to people's traditions. For the starters, being an American does not mean being white, black, Latino, Native, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Budhist, Atheist and the list goes on. One could be any of the above and still call this nation home. If you have a problem with that, move to the vatican or something.

Third, obviously a problem exists between the super and the parents. Various court decisions require that governmental organizations make reasonable accommodations to allow people to exercise their Constitutional rights. Lastly, its not a question of Muslims becoming Americans. Its a question of Americans changing to accept new Americans and new Americans learning to live among us.
The racism, religious intolerance, and dowright bigotry in these comments unfortunately doesn't amaze, but it will give Lewiston a bad name.

First let me thank Queenhoney Bee for her courage to stand up for justice. Most of you who have only negative things to say about the Muslims and Somalis need some reality check. The City of Lewiston was literally a dying town when the Somalis arrived a decade ago. Please don’t tell me this city belongs to anyone in particular. The Franco- Americans who helped shape the city were also immigrants from Canada, hence NON-Natives. In fact, immigration is an American story, also the racism and the bigotry that usually comes with any new wave of immigrants is also as American as an apple pie. Study your history people. We Somalis are tough and strong enough to take it. We appreciate and are grateful for the hospitality of the people of Maine. We brought entrepreneurship, creativity and above all a vibrant culture with us. I invite all of you to get to know us. How many of you have met Somalis or Muslims. Sure like any other community we have our share of losers, criminals and trouble makers, but we also have brilliant, hardworking, and great individuals. You can choose to hate us or like us, but rest assured, we are here to stay. We are here to prosper and contribute to the future of Maine. One last word: I am a Somali, a Mainer, a Muslim and more importantly married to a Franco-American whose great grandparents helped shape the City of Lewiston. I am not a loser, and I am not stupid, I have college degrees and I am respected amongst my peers. Please stop these nonsensical stereotypes and the escapegoating. Nobody is stopping you from being successful, Somalis are only demanding their God-given and constitutionally affirmed right to worship their God as they see fit.
May peace and Justice prevail.

First of all, when some muslims and somalis dont get what they want, they say negative things about the city of Lewiston and its citizens. The franco-Americans were not the only ones to help "shape" the city of Lewiston and there are plenty of us that can lay claim to having franco-American ancestors. While it may be true they were, so called "non-natives",we today, who were born here and live here, are true natives of Lewiston.Has far as Lewiston being a dying city before the somalis came ,its still dying today. Somalis didnt make any difference....more manufacturing jobs, will.Your right about immigration being an American story. We welcomed all who wanted to come here and become legal American citizens.Yet alot of racism and bigotry is aimed at us Americans by some of the immigrants we welcome here because we dont conform to their ways. They should adapt to our country or leave our darn American apple pie alone! You say to us people to study our history and we need a reality check, well maybe you should do that also.Somalis/muslims are not prevented their freedom, language, culture, dress,or religion in the city of Lewiston.Yet when their demands are not met they resort to intimidation or force to get their way.School is not a church,synagogue,mosque,etc..There are times and places to pray ,even muslims have exceptions for school and work.

How exactly was Lewiston a "dying town" before the mass immigration? If anything, the relocation into our town almost killed it when the amount of people applying to welfare jumped considerably. In my opinion, the first major contribution of your people was the strong bonding that developed when the hate groups tried to campaign here in 2001. Mainers of all ethnic backgrounds stood together united against hate.
I don't think anyone is arguing against your right to practice your religion, it's the NAACP-wannabe CAIR that is demanding that government funded public schools kowtow to their demands and provide facilities catering explicitly to their beliefs.

I was linked to this news article from a website, one that I frequent constantly. Reading the comments, it seems like a lot of the people posting are from Lewiston themselves.
I feel the need to point out that it seems like most of you are very inexperienced when it comes to blacks, african-american or just plain africans. Religion is merely part of the large problem of what happens when culturally and racially alien ethnicities are forced to near one another.
What none of you seem to understand(or at the very least, refuse to admit publicly for fear of being called that nasty "R-Word") is that once they become the majority or even a sizable percentage of the town, that it will cease to be "your" town, or even the town you remember. It will instead begin to resemble the type of town that these people create wherever they go, the type of town they take with them no matter where they travel. Unless you fancy moving away or living in a city like Detroit(I mention Detroit because the people in this case are somalians, in reality it's far more likely to end up even worse than that - the african americans that live in Detroit are 20-45% white, or ethnic european depending on your preferred vernacular), you MUST take a hardline stance towards immigration by racially and culturally alien peoples.
I am not being a bigoted hatemonger, I am merely pointing out facts that anyone can see with their own two eyes. Different types of people create types of different societies. If you want to live in the kind of place that Somalians create (I hear Somalia is such a nice place these days) then by all means, ignore what I'm saying. I'm a black man and I live in Texas in a black area, so trust me when I say I know what I'm talking about(for those reeling in shock at the previous statement, I would like to point out that being black doesn't mean you can't see things for what they are - even when they have to do with your fellow kin).
Calling your fellow whites racist nazis or making obscure and nonsensical references to the klan will not change black behavior. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution and you should be ashamed of your ignorant and intellectually bankrupt behavior.

Lawmakers ask IRS to investigate CAIR
November 17, 2009
By Art Moore
Prompted by evidence in a new book, a senator and five Congress members are urging the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations to determine whether the controversial Muslim group's lobbying activities on Capitol Hill violate its nonprofit status.
The letter to IRS Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman is signed by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and members of the House antiterrorism caucus, Reps. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., John Shadegg, R-Ariz., Trent Franks, R-Ariz., Paul Broun, R-Ga., and Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.
The Washington, D.C.-based CAIR – which had its relationship with the FBI cut off this year after being named an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history – has been under increased scrutiny since the release of "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America," a WND Books publication by former Air Force special agent P. David Gaubatz and "Infiltration" author Paul Sperry. The authors present firsthand evidence CAIR is acting as a front for a well-funded conspiracy of the Muslim Brotherhood – the parent of al-Qaida and Hamas – to infiltrate the U.S. and help pave the way for Saudi-style Islamic law to rule the nation.
Get the book that exposed CAIR from the inside-out, autographed, from WND's Superstore!
The letter, also addressed to the House clerk, Senate secretary and Senate superintendent of records, points to evidence uncovered in "Muslim Mafia" that CAIR may be in violation of both the anti-excessive-lobbying provision of its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995 by failing to register with Congress as a federal lobbying organization.
As CAIR's own website states, the group's Governmental Affairs Department "conducts and organizes lobbying efforts on issues related to Islam and Muslims."
CAIR says its department is "active in monitoring legislation and government activities and then, responding on behalf of the American Muslim community. CAIR representatives have testified before Congress and have sponsored a number of activities designed to bring Muslim concerns to Capitol Hill."
As WND reported last month, Myrick, Shadegg, Franks and Broun formally asked the House sergeant at arms to investigate evidence from "Muslim Mafia" that CAIR is conspiring to plant "spies" inside Congress targeting sensitive security-related committees. In another letter, to Attorney General Eric Holder, the House members ask the Justice Department to reveal to Congress members why CAIR was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history.
"Muslim Mafia" points out CAIR, as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, is severely restricted from lobbying and expressly prohibited from political campaigning.
By law, the book points out, CAIR must notify the IRS of any intent to lobby by filing a special form.
A 501(c)(3) organization "will lose its tax-exempt status and its qualification to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions if a substantial part of its activities are carried on to influence legislation," the IRS states in Form 5768.
Internal documentation and press releases obtained by "Muslim Mafia" authors suggest a substantial portion of CAIR's operations involve lobbying operations.
In its effort to repeal the Patriot Act antiterrorism law in 2005, for example, CAIR made 72 trips to Congress, according to internal documents. "Muslim Mafia" notes Congress met just 150 days that year.
CAIR also spends $25,000 a year to organize a national "lobby day on the Hill" in which its members nationwide come to Washington – armed with CAIR talking points on a single issue – to meeting with their representatives.
CAIR, which calls its governmental affairs department a "lobbying office," also has created databases to streamline its lobbying efforts, including one to automatically alert staffers on Capitol Hill about its policy issues.
IRS statutes also forbid CAIR from supporting or opposing anyone running for office, but CAIR has held political fundraisers benefiting Muslim U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and other Democrats. The group also has used its resources to get out the vote for Ellison and Democrats in tight races.
In 2004, CAIR bused Muslim voters from mosques to polls to support Democrats in key Florida counties.
The IRS also prohibits CAIR from inviting Democrats to speak at its forums without extending formal invitations to Republicans. But with the exception of GOP Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, "Muslim Mafia" says, CAIR mostly has vilified Republicans rather than reach out to them.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, is suing "Muslim Mafia" co-author P. David Gaubatz and his son Chris over the evidentiary documents they obtained during Chris' six-month undercover penetration of the organization, which both the FBI and Justice Department have branded as a terror co-conspirator. As a result of revelations in "Muslim Mafia," the bipartisan Congressional Anti-Terrorism Caucus is calling for new, wide-ranging federal probes of CAIR. In the meantime, however, someone has to defend these two courageous investigators who have, at great personal risk, revealed so much about this dangerous group. WND has stepped up to the plate, procured the best First Amendment attorneys in the country and is paying for the Gaubatzes' defense – but we can't do it without your help. Please donate to WND's Legal Defense Fund now. Thank you.

Church & State Violation Examples:
1. An organization uses a government grant for religious activity.
2. A public school event includes prayer or a public school teaches creationism or intelligent design.
3. The government displays a religious symbol or text on public property.
4. Prayers are recited before or after public meetings, that contain language or symbols specific to one religion.
5. The government funds religious hospitals that refuse to provide certain kinds of reproductive health care services for religious reasons.
Government funding of religious schools or religious social service providers
6. The government provides grants or other aid to religious educational institutions or “faith-based” social service providers. Such funding is particularly constitutionally troublesome if:
7. government aid is actually used for religious instruction or activity; or
direct cash aid is given to a pervasively religious institution or program; or
the aid recipient discriminates in employment based on religion with respect to publicly-funded positions; or
the aid recipient coerces service recipients to submit to religious proselytization or take part in religious worship; or
only religious organizations are eligible for funding under the aid program.
Religious activity in the public schools
The government promotes or sponsors prayer or other religious activity in the public schools. Examples include:
8. prayer at school-sponsored events such as graduations, assemblies, and football games;
9. prayer at the beginning of the school day;
10. religious presentations by teachers or outside groups during the school day;
11. distribution of the Bible or other religious literature in school;

The phrase "separation of church and state" is derived from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to a group identifying themselves as the Danbury Baptists. In that letter, referencing the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, Jefferson writes:
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.[29]

Please send your emails of support to the Lewiston school and ask that they NOT allow special treatment for Muslims. If they have a prayer room, that would be like having a church on school property. That is okay at a college where kids are adults and can make up their own mind but placing such things in schools for little children can manipulate them. In my opinion, they are trying to evangelize and bring Islam to our children.

Christians have been discriminated against for years at public schools so this is nothing new. If the Muslim students get free reign for their religious needs then freedom for Christians should also prevail (that means Christian groups, Bible study, etc. on school property).

This is coming as a shock, but I do agree with queenhoneeybee. To say that they are filthy and smell is an unnecessary attempt at a low blow and can be construed as racist, though it is your right to think that. I do agree that since they are here, they must follow our laws and regulations. When I was in H.S., a group of teens used to gather around the flagpole and pray BEFORE the start of the school day. The were told to stop because it was being done on school property, they weren't a school authorized group, and the school couldn't show favoritism to one religious group. This was about 15 years ago. Where are the groups that fought to keep prayer out of school now? Caught in between a rock and a hard place: protecting their rights and being called racist, or siding with one religious group over another. I bet those groups never thought this would happen, which is why they are now silent on the matter. I think that if they are going to have a prayer room for one religious group that it should be open to any student of any religion who wants to pray, and that that room should be monitored for safety, and controlled with times and student capacity and scheduling. That would show tolerance of all cultures and religious organizations. Muslims in this country must be tolerant of other cultures and religions too.

These last two posts do a perfect job in illustrating exactly what is HURTING Lewiston right now and what is keeping us from progressing. sunnyjournal: If you found yourself living in Mogadishu you would be completely lost in a society unlike anything you've ever seen before. I see Lewistonites all over seem to expect the Somali community to become flag-waving Americans the day they stepped foot on American soil. When any community of immigrants comes to a new place, there is always a rocky period of problems before things can be sorted out. People who don't understand this are clearly oblivious the the history of the Lewiston's French-Canadian and Acadian population. It will get better with each generation. I can already see significant progress with the youngsters in the Somali community. queenhoneybee: You're throwing words out there that are completely uncalled for. You have absolutely nothing constructive to contribute to the conversation. All you can do is whine about how everything out of someone's mouth is a clear example of prejudice. Perhaps instead of both sides jumping to conclusions and forming opinions based on hearsay, we could actually have a constructive conversation about something that's pretty important to our city's present and future?

When I was in school all students said the Christian's Lord's prayerbefore the Pledge of Alligiance. My Jewish friends would pray silently as we are a bigotted, racist nation and always have been. Non-Christian Americans are still being killed in our armed forces officer training colleges [Constatine's Sword].
If you racial bigots picked up a college grade Maine history book [can not find it to cite source as I just moved] you will find that the Ku Kux Klan was started in Maine before it reached statehood and before there were any black people here!

I must agree with and congratulate the following three especially for saying it like it is: Concernredinpineetree, Jami, and Bumble. Unfortunately the Muslim population will have to accept the unfortunate fact that in this country we are all treated alike. If they want special rules, such as allowing prayer in school, they will have to provide their own schools as the Catholic and Christian denominations do. If they want to pray at work, work for a company that allows it.
To our School administrators, congratulation for standing up to this special interest group; especially to the one who terminated the phone conversation. To our politicians, stand up for America.

It is their religious freedom/duty/routine...
There is a Maine State Employment Law that PROTECTS being discriminated against for religion. The Muslim Community should not have to change their ways in a religious sense for anyone else's.

The school has no problem with students praying privately so long as they do not disturb or endanger others in doing so. If the young lady sat at a desk or table and prayed quietly or silently I am sure nothing would have been said. Where the problem lies is in here kneeling in a hallway. You are not allowed so sit or kneel or place objects on the floor or in any other way obstruct the hallway. If a fire alarm were pulled or if some in attentive passerby tripped over this girl there would be all kinds of trouble. If pne of them were injured the lawsuits would be flying in all likelihood but either way someone would have been injured needlessly. Would this girl kneel and pray in the middle of Center Street? Freedom of religion is a great thing, but common sense is even better. Let the girl sit at a desk or table in their normal location and say all the prayers she wants quietly or silently with out disturbing others or putting her self or others at risk of accidental injury.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond. This isn't about prejudice.
This isn't about prejudice. It is about recognizing historical evidence. Politically correct multicultural attitudes are eroding the identity of this country. The country allows small minority groups to enforce on the whole society their notion on what they think their rights should be. The CAIR organization is a joke. They try to bully towns like Lewiston with political correctness. Just look at their stance on Fort Hood and how even with mounting evidence the guy wasn't a nut but a devout muslim radical. This country earned its reputation as a melting pot. It's what made us the envy of the world. It's why people over the course of time, died trying to get to America. It's the same reason why people volunteer to defend America. Far too often people want to change this country into silos of people who don't want to integrate but rather exist here in their own communities, not learn the most common languauge BUT benefit from taxpayer benefits. Why is it the Muslims have become so demanding in the past 10 years? It's becuase our political correctness has emboldened them. If a Judeo-Christian group did that in a Muslim run country how far do you think they'd get? Next they will want to institute Sharia law rather than follow established laws. They have already tried this in Europe. And stats show that the average Muslim family is growing faster than native Europeans so they will have evntual voting power to do what they want. The lunacy is many can barely afford to support their large families so they benefit from taxpayer aid. Does Jamad Warsame work? Hmm I wonder with free time to pick up her daughter during the school week? I have alot of issues with the way schools are run BUT NO prayer room please and NO visual displays of religion in school. It insults me they would even ask for such a thing at taxpayer expense. The minute CAIR gets involved it reeks of joke organization, farce, and sympathetic in many circles to radicals trying to use political correctness to get it's way. Lewiston be strong and don't be pushed around by Jamad Warsame or the farce CAIR.

When I was in school, we used to have morning prayer over the intercom. The students chose whether to participate or not. Then, the government said they would no longer allow this. I would have liked it to continue, but it was against the law. I prayed silently at times. It was not disruptive, and no one was even aware of it but me. Couldn't Muslims do the same? If they don't want to do this, I have another suggestion............
Some members of my family pay to send their children to private school where they have prayer. They are not rich people and must "tighten their belts" to do this. But they feel it is in the best interest of the children. Perhaps the Muslims could pool their resources and start a private school.
If they do start making special rules for Muslims, they should also do this for each religious persuasion in the public school system.

Wait until our lackluster list of aspiring local political candidates swells with immigrant names.
Somalis and other "New Mainer" type immigrants now comprise at least 15% (or better) of Lewsiton's population. I don't have the exact statistics, but a huge percentage, are on some form of social assistance. It's been quite a change in demographics, all occurring in a little more that 5 years. We are just beginning to witness the City of Lewiston repeat it's hsitory once again, re-evolving through immigration. This time the lure to pursue better life here is not factory work, but social welfare (that offers excellent fully paid: meal allowances, health care, dental, educational, & housing benfits). It's an income source that yields more of an at least "perceived" benefit that increases in direct proportion to the number of babies you can produce. It's a lovely formula that most religions seeking to increase their enrollment via mass reproduction of the faithful can thrive in.
Basically it also boils down to healthy adults making a living off the production of children.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.First off I have to say I
First off I have to say I can't believe Maureen Lachappelle STILL is at the Middle School. Her demeanor and attitude-everything about her STINKS! I do not doubt this one bit. Not only by the schools standards "by protecting one of their own" but who Maureen is and her personality in general. Its more than apparent that it hasn't changed. Lewiston Superintendent Leon Levesque should've maybe schooled his teachers and principals in the matter before it got to this point and portrayed themselves/Lewiston/Maine as discriminating, prejudiced losers. Shame on you Maureen for telling a mother and her child to take them out of school and pray at a park! Leon Levesque finally can her, will ya!?!
I can't believe it took a Muslim Civil Rights Organization to back up Jamad Warsame and Nasra Aden. Anyone and everyone-don't matter who they are should be able to pray if they want and the schools (as public and diverse as they are) need to be accommodating to children with any and all religions. I am very sorry to them both and probably the many other children who were denied their right and religious freedom to pray in a safe, comfortable environment within the school.
Aside from all of this-I know of too many children's stories who are discriminated against and harassed at school because of their religion-Muslim. Children learn from their parents-we as adults and teachers and people who are looked up to-set examples in how we treat others. Another thing I can't stand is how SOME parents blame the Muslim Community as a whole for fights that might break out or arguments in the schools. Don't think that you're children are the angels because you refuse treat the Muslim Community Equally yourselves. Have you ever been backed into a corner or bullied every single day of your school life? Its not fun. Stop discriminating and thriving on hate people! Stop being so dang prejudiced.
I am just glad that this situation has been reported and something is being done about it. I hope that the school does something about this immediately. Maureen needs to know that she can't treat kids and their mothers like crap. Fire her!

i think your just out here to piss people off..... i guess we'll need an advocacy group for all kids to settle this once and for all, we have already bent over backwards for these people and if they don't like it, see ya, simple as that. i am sick and tired of kissing their butts whenever they don't get what they want, our own kids are going without to cator to these. and by that i mean if we have a kid with special needs, most of the time the kid has to go live in another state to get those special needs met. you think this is so good and they need it all..... let them go live with your ass. you make me sick, and you are probably sucking up a bunch of welfare too.

well, i guess if i peed someone off-i did my job. =] glad to know that i can be the one to 'attack' now, because i commented on a story that entails discrimination.
as far as a school for a child with special needs... i agree something needs to be done in the state of maine for the best quality care and more schools/facilities. i can only assume your comment refers to a child who is mentally or physically handicapped/blind/deaf or both. how does that start? i don't know-maybe people who can be advocates for a place such as that within the state of maine.
My comment stated that ALL people with ALL religions should have a safe, comfortable place to pray-if they must. We are a country of diverse and unique. This isn't the 'white-man's' land no more. Never was. As far as the Muslim religion. This is what is asked for them do to. They shouldn't have to change their ways or routine to please anyone else.
I assume terms like 'they' and 'sucking up a bunch of welfare too' are meant to be pop-shots towards the Muslim Community. They are prejudiced, stereotypical remarks that are distasteful. The Muslim Community are human beings and deserve the utmost respect just as myself and the next person.

You know, what you said about Maureen Lachappelle is not very nice at all.And about Lewiston/Maine as discriminating, prejudiced losers. You have just offended all of us who live here.It seems has if your the one who discriminates and thrives on hate.Your always throwing the hate word around like its the only word you know.Just because someone disagrees, or believes in right & wrong does not make it hate.We that went to public school never had a special room to pray in.We also didnt have special rooms for kids with blue eyes and kids with brown eyes.A schools purpose is to give an education, not a safe, comfortable place to pray.Even muslims need to adapt to where they are living,if they need to pray during school hours than they should probably attend a muslim school that practices their ways.We are not going to change the whole city of Lewiston just to suit everyones culture.Has far as being harrassed and such at school because of their religion,it sounds like one of your special interest themes. They do those things (fight, discriminate, harass, argue, ridicule)in school also. I see them go by my house every day, and alot of them behave like the rules that we have to live by ,do not apply to them. There are alot of muslims who are nice, peaceful, hardworking people that are adapting to this country and dont expect special treatment. You stir up and incite hatred with your anti-Lewiston talk. You really need to have a talk with your ownself.

It always amazes me how people like you are so quick to defend Muslims, when you obviously know NOTHING about Islam. Wait until a group of Somali men call you a sharmoota (whore) to your face ...and THEN tell me how you feel? I know arabic cuss words and hear them frequently in LA!!!

Wow - talk about prejudice! While I don't really care for the principal or vice principal at LMS, I think she handled it the way it should have been handled. No matter what I say, I am sure I will be called racist or Prejudice, but I believe that SOME of the people in the muslim community believe that they are entitled to special treatment because they are muslim. I have heard way too many conversations with them which lead to them yelling and arguing to have it "their way" and they won't bend until you give in. I don't blame her for hanging up on him, she said he wouldn't take no for an answer and I believe that is true. This is a tough situation no matter what, but why does everything have to lead to filing some kind of "case" against everyone???

Might as well build a mosque, catholic church and every other religous building on every school properity, just for one kind of people that make a big friggen deal about everything. They moved here they need to deal with it just like everyone else. I'm getting sick and tired of hearing that WE need to change our ways for them. It was their choice to move to the US, so they can be change their ways. If not then I should tell my employer that I can't work on Sunday's and have Boxing day (canada) as a paid holiday. (Like hell that would happen)
