Equality for all will come in time

Gays can be proud.

Twenty years ago, Question 1 would not have made the ballot, and made it with 47 percent of the vote. It took women 144 years to get the vote and years of struggle to gain equality. It took the blacks over 180 years to be able to go into a restaurant with whites, or to get on a bus and not be told to move to the back.

Equality for all people will come in time.

It seems like the born gay

It seems like the born gay line of reasoning comes from gays, not scientists. I don't believe anyone is born gay. If some people are born gay does that mean others are born pedophiles? When "I was born that way" becomes an acceptable excuse for someone's behavior we will be in a state of anarchy. Gay people choose to be with someone of the same gender. Everything you do is by choice. Just because the other option means going against the way you feel it is still a choice. Unless science cam identify a gay gene or another physical cause I will not believe that anyone can be born gay.

Since there is a belief that

Since there is a belief that people are born gay.....What if the gay gene could be found through genetic testing . Since the pro-gay/pro-abortion people are of the same ilk, what if a couple decides to abort their baby because it would be gay? Would they be considered bigots? Just something to chew on.....

Scientists have already

Scientists have already determined that no "Gay Gene" exists, and believe being gay is a result of other prenatal factors. The "Brother Study" showed that the more older, biological brothers you had, the likelier you were to be gay (results found in adopted children as well, eliminating the different environmental factors). The scientists used this info to suggest that a woman's body essentially became "immune" to boys and started producing more feminine hormones. While the exact cause is still up in the air, it's obvious that you are born gay (after all, can you pin point the time you chose to be a heterosexual?).

And to answer the original question, yes they would be bigots. While the government has no right to ask a woman why she is getting an abortion, using race, gender, or sexuality as a reason is immoral in my book.

My hope is that homosexual

My hope is that homosexual marriage, which is completely different from authentic marriage between a man and a woman, is likely going to be rolled back in more states over the coming years. Then there's Canada and Europe after that. Yes it will be a long struggle and homosexuals will have an occasional victory here and there, but progress is on the side of those who support an authentic marriage.

Explain how it is different,

Explain how it is different, besides the obvious fact of gender. To claim that two people wanting to secure their love is not in fact authentic is ignorant and hateful.

Unless, of course, the court

Unless, of course, the court case being sheparded by Theodore Olson and David Boies makes it way to the United States Supreme Court. Ironically, the defeat of marriage equality in California may very well end up greasing the legs of this case to force the Supreme Court to take up the case.

A decade ago we would have

A decade ago we would have never thought same-sex marriage would be legalized anywhere, and now there are a handful of states where it is legal. It is only a matter of time until it happens here. The vote this year was much closer than I expected and I believe that in a few years Maine will be ready. Many young voters see no problem with same-sex marriage and will support it. After all, what is the big deal?

Gays can be proud but

Gays can be proud but comparing being gay to being black, a women or catholic is just ridiculous. And to all you "holier than thous" out there that think the people voted against question one because they are bigots just don't get it and probably never will.

Discrimination and

Discrimination and oppression based on homosexuality is just as real, hurtful and offensive as that based on race and gender; therefore the comparison is valid.

It is nowhere near the same

It is nowhere near the same and only a fool would actually believe that. To equate the suffering of blacks in this country to the angst felt by someone whose lifestyle is not approved of is beyond ludicrous and actually downright shameful.

See my post below. You ARE

See my post below. You ARE born gay, which means it is not really a "lifestyle" at all. Lifestyle is the way you CHOOSE to live your life. Gay people do not choose to be gay. Once people realize this, I think we'll make progress on equality.

And how is it different?

And how is it different? Scientists today are proving that being gay is a result of biological factors in the womb, putting it on a similair level as race or gender. Your religion is more a choice than your sexuality, and we have laws that protect religious choice!

The letter writer is

The letter writer is correct, equality will come in time. I think when we look back on the struggle for equality for blacks and the struggle for equality for women we thought the average voter was not as enlightened or educated as we are today and it is difficult for many of us to understand how with todays availability of information and education, we can find so many people who just don't care that others do not have their full rights.

The marriage equality law

The marriage equality law was overturned by 31% of registered Maine voters. It was not overturned by the majority of Maine citizens. There is hope; equality will happen.
