Gun in school leads to guilty plea by teacher aide

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A teacher's aide who brought an unloaded gun to a Portland school last month has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm on public school property.

WGME-TV says Beth Bergeron entered the plea on Tuesday.

Police say Bergeron didn't know the handgun was in a swim bag she brought to school on Nov. 18 until a student saw the weapon in the clear, see-through bag. Bergeron immediately took the bag to her car and reported the incident to officials at Riverton Elementary School.

Bergeron, who's 49, was placed on paid leave and eventually resigned on Friday.

Having a concealed carry

Having a concealed carry permit is a HUGE responsibility. You should know where your
firearm is at all times. I fully support concealed carry for Law abiding citizens. I think
this woman made an honest mistake and owned up to it. I don't think she should be charged with any crime but I do think her concealed carry permit should be revoked.

Punishment did not fit the

Punishment did not fit the crime. It was a mistake not a crime. In a clear plastic bag, she was really trying to hide it. Hooray for the anti-gun crowd. There just isn't any room for common sense in our political perfect correct society nowadays.

Malicious intent or not...if

Malicious intent or not...if a student "accidentally" brought a weapon to school, that student would be severely punished. In this case, a "responsible" gun-owning adult brought hers. No weapons of any kind should ever cross the doors of a school building...period. If I "made the mistake" of reaching for money that I dropped in the car to pay my toll, and I "accidentally" rear ended a car and killed a family of four...should I be treated differently by the justice system? This isn't a question of being politically correct, this is an issue of personal responsibility. Very few in our society, or the world for that matter, take full responsibility for our actions. In defense of the woman in question, she did plead guilty and realized that she did commit a crime...however accidental it may have been.

An honest mistake and she

An honest mistake and she did the right thing...put the bag safely in her car and told the office about the incident...I feel she should be given some "punishment" but shouldn't be criminally charged. Leave without pay or ?? Not an arrest and dismissal.

She still should lose her

She still should lose her permit and go to jail for the offense! She should have known where her weapon was at all times if she needed a concealed weapon permit. What does she do when she needs the gun. Say "TIME OUT" and everyone waits until she loads the thing. She is dangerous and an idiot.

you know, I remember when

you know, I remember when kids at school could ride the bus with their rifle and drop it off at the principle's office during school. After school pick it up and go hunting out back of the school. No problems. ...sigh...
