Stop adopting Haitian children

Adopting a child isn't like going to the pet store to get a dog or a cat. It takes a long time to adopt international children for two very specific reasons:

• The sponsoring country needs to be sure the child is adoptable; that a family really wants to give the child away; and the country agrees to let the child go.

• The adopting family's ability to provide for that child needs to be checked out. They must be aware of the difficulties of cultural and language barriers.

My daughter is working in Haiti with the International Rescue Committee Emergency Response Team to identify and support unidentified children. They are developing standardized tools so that regardless of the agency that finds a child, that child can be connected with extended families. She is also working with partners in Haiti to build safe places now for children to come and participate in activities. Creating a sense of normalcy for children is a very important step in recovery.

She tells me that the worst time to adopt a child is during a disaster or immediately after a disaster. These children need a safe place in their own country to adjust to the changes. The thousands who were lost as a result of the earthquake can never be replaced. To take the children away now is a travesty. Children provide hope and are the future of the country. Haiti needs them to help create a new and brighter future.

Whatever any of us think

Whatever any of us think about adoption and Haiti some things are clear.

The laws of Haiti must be respected.

Well-meaning groups that are formed on-the-fly to address the problems caused by the earthquake in Haiti are probably not the best groups to work with. There are many other groups that were in Haiti addressing the problems and needs of children for many decades. They understand the culture and the laws.

People who want to adopt a child are wonderful.

Haiti needs huge changes in many areas, cultural, societal, economic, political, etc., to begin to rise from the poverty that creates the orphan situation. The problems did not begin with an earthquake.

Wow tron I thought you didn't

Wow tron I thought you didn't like hate. But hey the people I care about want me to stay. As far as your vote to send me back. Well I am not sure where that is I am largely German but have quite abit of Indian (Native American for those how are PC) and the rest English and Irish. By the way I was saying leave them there because that is there home they should be there for the rebuilding so that they have national pride instead of coming to America where they are just a sad face for people to feel bad for. Once again I saw if you what to send your money go for it, more power to you, but I am not going to (expect through my taxes because of obama).

These are not ordinary times

These are not ordinary times and the devastation that has occured in Haiti requires immediate action to get these children out of harms way..........Loving caring people who have gone the extra mile to bring these children into their homes and provide them with a loving home and a chance to educate themselves.  Haitian people are intelligent, loving and beautiful people and any help we can provide them  is received with hope and love and is always appreciated.   Do not abandon these children, give them a chance to have a happy child-hood!

  Bravo all children should

Bravo all children should have a chance in life, thank God for orphanages when there available Haiti cannot  give protection care especially medical or evem a balanced diet to their people no child deserves this when outsde help is available and love and well being is offered, these children need help now thank God many people care.An orphanage in Haiti is not the answer now or ever has been, give the children a chance and a choice, they can always go back with an education and knowledge later on something they'll never get or have been able to get in the past.

People who want to adopt bless them it shows we still have compassion and love in this world BRAVO.

The biggest problem I see

The biggest problem I see with your bull-crap letter is that there is not now, nor is there likely to be soon, ANY safe place for orphan children in Haiti.  Yes we must be vigilant not have cults and other religious fanatics take the children, and goodness know you must be watchful of sexual predators that come out of the woodwork, but many of these children never knew anything good about life and now will likely never experience a good life.  If people want to give part of their hearts to these children.  You republicans would do well to learn a little humanity once in a while.

Why is this a Republican

Why is this a Republican versus Democrat issue? Also, and I may be wrong, but I think the author is a Democrat.

You are the biggest idiot

You are the biggest idiot I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. Only you would make this a republican/democratic issue. Since you have made it an issue, I'll go as far saying that if all democrats are like you Tron, having a Hatian child live with you would destroy this child beyond any normalcy. You are heartless, rude, and have no comprehension what compassion and reality is. I'm so glad that you aren't a republican because you would be the biggest embarassment to the party. Please go away.
