Right thing to do

Have you had a cold or flu yet this season? Were you able to stay home with your sick child?

We all get sick, but we can't all afford to stay home and get well. Nearly half of the full-time workers in the state can't take time off when they are sick.

For some, staying home means losing their job. Almost 250,000 Maine workers must go to work sick or not, putting everyone at risk.

That shouldn't happen in Maine. Parents should never be forced to choose between caring for themselves or a sick child and losing their livelihood.

My great-grandson is often sick since he started to go to day care. Sick children suffer when their parents don't have paid sick days. Pre-school-age children are the first to signal when flu season has arrived. Child care center rules require sick children stay at home, but many of them end up at day care because their parents don't have paid sick days. This sets up a chain reaction, with the virus passing from child to playmate, to playmates' parents, and to parents' co-workers.

Our state senators and representatives will have a chance to make a difference for Maine workers. They will vote on LD 1665, "An Act to Aid in the Prevention of the Spread of H1N1." This bill would provide between three and five paid sick days a year for full-time workers.

It is the right thing to do. I urge support for this important legislation.

This absolutely should not be

This absolutely should not be a governmental decision. Negotiate with your boss about sick leave surrounding LEGITIMATE illness. I can see this leading to abuse and burdening employers. Think ahead, and have that conversation.

Good grief, when did Mainers become so damned entitled and soft? The Nanny state mentality has got to go...enough is enough.

The parrot wonders just how

The parrot wonders just how much thought Dot has given relative to who's going to pay for this largesse? Pretty big word for a parrot, eh? Everyone who takes a job knows (or should know) the benefits that go with the job when they take it. Want a job with paid sick leave? Then that's the kind of job you take. Can't find one that doesn't have paid sick leave, but you take it anyway?. Cool...but why then, should paid sick leave for you become your employer's problem? Grow up.

How about if companies could

How about if companies could do Comp time. That is the employee can choose that instead of getting paid overtime they could take comp time which could be used for paid sick days. The Idea of comp time if you work 8 hours of overtime and choose to take it as comp you would have 12 hours of paid sick leave. Seems something like that would make everyone happy as well. Finally well said Tron

The beauty of Northwoods'

The beauty of Northwoods' suggestion is that the financial impact on the companies would remain relatively neutral. Win-win for everybody. Won't happen, though. Too freakin' logical.

Sorry Dot, make sick days

Sorry Dot, make sick days mandatory but not paid unless it is a large employer.  The Mom and Pop operations cannot afford it, generally.

That is very similar to what

That is very similar to what I have at work. We are give a number of Paid Time Off and from that we have to take our holidays, sick, vacation and "I just need a sanity day" from. This for me has worked well since I don't take a lot of sick time.

As strange as it may seem,

As strange as it may seem, for once I agree with you, tron.  Paid time off from work is an employer-provided benefit, not a basic right.  Larger employers provide time off as enticement to recruit and retain good employees, but small businesses that operate on razor-thin profit margins could find themselves losing money if they had to provide paid sick time while also paying for a replacement worker.  This proposal is a prime example of unnecessary government intrusion into private business,

It all started with the

It all started with the federally mandated family leave act. It was unpaid at first, but the incrementalists have brought it to this level. Like him or hate him, this is exactly what Limbaugh predicted would happen. Imagine a man taking 8-10 weeks off from work because his wife's pregnant. AARRGHH!!!
