SABATTUS — Three teenagers were charged with aggravated assault this week, accused of dropping chunks of ice onto passing traffic from a turnpike overpass more than a year ago.
Maine State Police say the boys, ages 16 and 17, were the culprits who hurled massive chunks of ice onto passing cars and trucks on an evening in January 2009.
Two men were hurt by the falling ice as they drove along the turnpike in separate trucks beneath Webster Road in Lewiston.
One of the men was seriously injured. Bob Deschaine of Sabattus was knocked unconscious when ice smashed through his windshield, hitting him in the face. A relative in the passenger seat was able to grab the wheel and bring the truck to a stop.
Deschaine suffered cuts and head injuries.
“He was struck by a beach-ball-sized chunk of ice,” said Maine State Police Spokesman Stephen McCausland. “It’s remarkable that he survived.”
The three boys, students at Oak Hill High School in Wales, were charged with aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon.
Tracking them down was not easy, police said.
Moments after Deschaine was knocked unconscious inside his truck, Lewiston police and Maine State Police searched the area around the overpass. The suspects were not found.
Because the incident happened on the highway, state police investigated. Trooper Roger Teachout was assigned to the case and never let it go.
“He’s been following up on this, as well as some similar incidents that occurred along the turnpike,” McCausland said. “He got some new information in the last couple of weeks that led to these three boys.”
Police did not know Thursday night whether the three suspects had been jailed. They were expected to make court appearances in May.

Oakhill Vandals
This case is all based on hear say beacause Roger Teachout is a crooked cop he asked a 16 yr old how to do this case and he messed up multiple summons for the accused teenagers!

ITS ME needs to wake up and face reality - if that's possible. Reality may be something ITS ME hasn't experienced for a while.

The "punks" you speak of from South Portland, the ones who are being given a chance to go out and play basketball, are the END of their sentences. They have participated in a program to actually make them working members of society. They aren't hardened criminals, they are kids who for the most part have come from terrible backgrounds and who made some mistakes. They have to earn the right to be on the team, and they deserve more than your ignorant scorn. Get the facts before you run your mouth.

This happens in other states by stupid people. If Maine would be more stricter with the penalties for dangerous acts like this, it might cut down on the acts. Just maybe. Look what they do with the punks in So. Portland's detension center! Let these lawbreaking kids go to the beach, play in basketball tournaments like normal kids "because they earned the rights by being good". HELL! They are supposed to be good in jail. That is why they are locked up away from normal population. This ice throwing incident is not an honest mistake for liberals to take pity on these poor kids. The need to be locked up for as long as they can be.

These kids did a very stupid act. Someone could have been killed. This does not speak well of the parents. Poor upbringing.
