Fire them all

After reading a couple articles in the Sun Journal, March 21, I just had to voice my opinion.

First of all, let's not blame the Democrats for all the nation's problems. Let's go back to when Bill Clinton was president. He handed over a $50-plus billion surplus to President George Bush.

Bush went ape; he thought he and all his cronies had a blank check.

If anyone thinks that the bad decisions made by him and the Republicans wasn't felt around the world, you better think again. If anyone cares to remember, the Republicans pushed bills through, without the Democrats, because they were in charge.

The Republicans are acting like a bunch of school kids. They want all or nothing, or, as Bush said, his way or the highway.

President Obama has been in office only a little more than a year and no one will work with him. So how does anyone expect things to happen so soon?

If the Senate and the House would work together for the country and the people, instead of their own personnel greed, things would get done. Let's all work together and get this country back to being No. 1 in the world.

I hope others will agree with me. Our representatives and senators need to stop bickering and stop the pettiness of who's on top and who's going to win the next election. If they aren't careful, we could fire them all and start over.

George and Joan Blaisdell, Sabattus

Who is responsible for the mess we are in?

"The three stooges Obama,Polosi and Reid are responsible for the mess we are in..." What planet to you live on. Surely not this one.

Our current recession began in December 2007. 11 months before the election. Most economists admit that the recession bottomed-out in March 2009. Geo. Bush entered office with a $50 billion fiscal surplus and a very minor and isolated recession caused by the dot com bubble. Obama entered with a $1.3 trillion deficit and the worst recession since WWII, 15 million people out of work, a frozen financial system, a million families going bankrupt each year because of medical cost. Yes, this mess must be all Obama, Pelosi, and Reid's fault.

 's picture

Think this Economy is Turning Soon?

Don't bet on it.  No, it's not Obama's fault that we are in this economic mess.  We are in a massive correction that was inevitable given the drunken spending spree that Congress and G7 nations have been on since the late 1940's.  Start with this one:  Every dime that I and every worker has had deducted from our gross pay since Social Security started has been spent.  Spent on recipients, battleships, carriers, welfare and B-2 bombers among other goodies.  This the year where more will be paid out in SS benefits than will be collected.  They've opened the file cabinet and hauled out the IOU's that we now will have to pay back.  They have invested in nothing.

We are $14 trillion in debt and, with Obama at the helm, will be adding to the debt at a rate of $2 trillion a year.  Our national debt  will soon equal our national GDP....generally regarded as a fatal tipping point to disaster.  If the government took all of our net worth away from us, it wouldn't begin to cover the debt we owe.

Maine is $14 billion in debt.  Hopeless.

You can thank the free-spending morons in Congress and in Augusta for this.  Decades and decades of them.  Morons is a strong word, but very appropriate given the disaster we are currently in.

Joe on the Street is in for one heck of surprise.  The elected elite are playing extend and pretend.  And the media continues to either be ignorant of the basic economics of our time or is willfully sweeping it under the rug.

Who's fault is it that the Health Care Plan obama signed and shoved down our throats on Tuesday EXEMPTS the president and his family, the vice-president and his family, the staff members who worked on the bill and their families, AND, the entire U.S. congress. They'll continue to get their cake Health Care Plan while the rest of us get the crumbs. Is THAT all Bush's fault too?

RONALD RIML's picture

And do you imagine????

It will also exempt members of the Military who have their own Government Health Care which has been shoved down their throats?  I've got to see if it exempts me, with my Tri-Care For Life which was Shoved Down my Throat (earned) as a retired member of the military.

It's a rough piece of cake, but someone has to eat........

Did you have any choice as to which military plan covered you then or the one that covers you now? They may not have been shoved and they were and probably are very good. But, you had no choice.

The plan is not going to cover illegal immigrants.

Why do you claim that it is???

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

Nothing; except that it's

Nothing; except that it's another one of obama's freakin' lies. He said that before he signed any bill, it would be on the web for 5 days so that  the American people would have the opportunity to see what was in it. This Chinese deal he signed on Tuesday had only been approved by the congress 36 hours prior to his signing it. What happened to the five days? Another bald-faced lie. And you guys think Bush lied. This guy will p**s down your back and tell you it's raining.

The wooden one or the other

The wooden one or the other one?

Libertarians argue that we need a radically smaller federal government. We tried that and it failed miserably. From 1781 to March 4, 1789 our federal government had no president, couldn't levy taxes or control commerce among its many failings. We, the people of the United States, not the states themselves agreed to be governed by a strong, vital national government in order "to create a more perfect union" of the people. That's why the Constitution begins "We, the people".

 's picture

Back to US History 101

The Constitution of the United States does not grant the Federal Government unlimited power over the several States.

It grants specific power to do specific things on behalf of the States. The Articles of Confederation did not go far enough. Rather than retrofit that document, a new Constitution was proposed.

Over the years, the Federal Government has usurped more and more power than it was ever granted by the Constitution, all for the "good of the nation" or the "good of the people." Nothing in the Constitution of the United States grants the Federal government such broad and reaching power as it wields today. It is no longer representative of the several States, it has become an entity of its own. That sucking sound you hear is your hard earned devaluated tax dollers being taken out of your paycheck.

But the blame does not lie with any single political party. We The People of the United States are solely to blame, because over the years, we have entrusted our liberties to unscrupulous politicians, and we have failed to hold them accountable. As long as it did not directly affect "me" we let it slide, until now everything government does takes more and more from us; freedom, liberty, property.

But who cares about a little liberty when we have so much "stuff?" When government can give us (read promise us) everything we want? A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have. (A quote sometimes attributed to Thomas Jefferson, but there is no evidence that he ever said that.)

When you have no more to give, because government is taking it all, and the things you "want" are gone and not even your "needs" are being met, maybe then you'll wake up and smell the coffee. But I doubt it.

Oh, and for the record, I'm not a Libertarian, nor am I anti-government.

in case you missed it....

those who earn over 200K ARE affected by the plan because they are paying into it! That is affect in my book. I did not see any "tronizims" last week before the vote with the same Rep Stupak remarked that he, his wife at home at 3am and his home state and washington offices were receiving the same threats by the radical lefties for potentially crashing the same bill he eventually lost his spine on. Forgot he was on the "wrong" side last week. Funny. CNN must not have covered that.

Can I get an "Obama's in bed with BIG OIL" from you like we heard when gas was at the $3 dollar a gallon mark during the last administration? Didn't think so.

Vote Libertarian

All those who wish to repeal the Constitution; vote libertarian. The libertarian Party stands for the rejection of everything that the Constitution was created to do. Fact is that the Libertarian Party is the Republican Party of my great uncle's day say 1940 when he died. Isolationist, luddites who fear economic progress and international cooperation.

 's picture

Libertarians today

The only thing we want to roll the clock back on is this bloated tick of a government we have. Libertarians want the feds to worry about national defense, and return states rights. The problem inherent in the current system is that we hire (elect) legislators. These legislators immediately begin working on re-election. In order to prove what a good job they've done, they have to pass more laws. This goes way beyond the protection of the citizens and begins to cut into liberties under the guise of necessity. Now, the "land of the free" is quite possibly the most over-legislated nation on Earth.

How so? Please explain. The

How so? Please explain. The parrot thinks you just pulled that out of your hat and flipped it out there.

Slight of hand

No deficit??? A Surplus. Do you see the slight of hand used by David Gagnon. Clinton cut the fiscal deficit and achieved four years of fiscal surpluses. So David directs you to the debt web page. Not the fiscal deficit which comes from the budget (revenue - expenditures) which is what we are talking about because that's what a President controls. Debt includes many items most of which the President doesn't control. Republican Presidents have added $12.0 of the $12.9 trillion to the fiscal deficit and that's a fact.

"...there was no reficit reduction, no surplus, no savings under clinton...The far-right fanatics can't even accepted well documented facts. 4 straight years of federal fiscal deficit reductions and budget surpluses using the same formula that for decades have shown the Republicans' wasteful spending that has created $12 trillion of fiscal debt of the $12.9 trillion that has been created in over 220 years.

The worst of the Health Care Reform bill that passed the house Sunday is better than anything the Republicans proposed under their new campaign slogan - Don't get sick, and when you do die quickly.

Steve Bannister's picture

A couple of things I find interesting...

Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid are UNIVERSAL entitlements, meaning, all who pay in have access. This bill is not universal. Of the many who pay in, only few have access. The majority who access it are not paying into the program. This is "affordable" healthcare. The government mandates all Americans purchase a good or service or face a penalty. That is just like SS and/or Medicare and Medicaid? I know well before hand that when I retire, if it is still there, and I do not take my monies accumulated in Social Security I will have to pay a fine to the federal government that will increase over time. That is the identical program we are arguing about! Sorry, I lost me train of thought for a minute.

Still waiting for either, SSDD, Tron or anyone to explain to me how we support a program, any program that is payed into for 10 years and provides only 6 years of benefits. Once again my automobile loan analogy; I  purchase a vehicle and take a loan with a ten year term, however, I cannot take possession of, or drive my new vehicle until I have made four years of payments. At least in this scenario I know where my money is going. Can either of you or anyone for that matter, explain where our money is going for the next four years and how this exceptable practice? I pay 15% of my employer provided healthcare, State funded Dirigo Health and now Obamacare. Obama ran on hope and change. it should be "Change, That's all you'll have left, when Obama's done"

RONALD RIML's picture

So without the Republicans -

Obama probably could have actually got a National, Single Payer System like the rest of the real countries have.

Instead - we're stuck with  "No Insurance Company Left Behind"

Just what is it that the GOP owes to 'Guido and the Mob?'

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

How many Americans are going

How many Americans are going to Canada and U.K. for health care?

How many Canadians, Brits, and God knows who else are coming to America for health care?

Why couldn't they have just fixed the current system, which just happens to be the best in the world, instead of trashing the whole damn thing?

 's picture

lol make up your mind, Veritas.

I think you just like deriding people.

You jump on folks for being against the new bill, then you call it for what it truly is, "No Insurance Company Left Behind" (Brilliant. I need to remember that one), and THEN blame the Republicans for a bill the Democratic party single-handedly shoved down the throat of the American people in an attempt to make Obama look good.

This has nothing to do with health care reform. It's all about Obama getting to say that he made good on at least one of his campaign promises.

"but we are not going down

"but we are not going down the road of socialism, communism or progressivism without a fight, not with weapons or hateful words, but facts and the love of freedom".

Getting harder and harder to see how we're going to pull it off without bringing weapons into it, since obama's in charge of the military and they will follow his orders and destroy the opposition unless the military rebels against him as in a banana republic coup. Facts and love of freedom won't do it. Progressives never allow facts to stand in their way and they hate America and everything it stands for. It will get nasty and dirty before it's all over. Although I don't believe it will happen the way you say, I do share your sentiments, Komrade Papa Gino.

So just how Regressive do you recommend being???

You fear progress?  Progressives drive you up a wall?

Then, by all means - regress.

But how far?

1850 far enough?

Get them Darkies back under the whip - and celebrate the recent victory in the U.S.-Mexican War where California, Nevada, Utah and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming were ceded to the U.S. - and the U.S. was given undisputed control of Texas.

Funny that all them Mexicans now want to come back to what used to be Mexico before we invaded and conquored it.

If the bill had not gone through for obama's signature, the libs would be in the streets, looting, and destroying property in unprecedented numbers. Tipping cars in the streets and setting them on fire. But, you'd have to watch Fox to see any footage. And which lib is going to give up American Idol or Entertainment Tonight to witness reality. Unless, of course, it's a reality show.

For those of you, whom like

For those of you, whom like tron refuse to research before making statements on this blog, I will use this quote because it is so well written and is factual:

"While most exchanges in the letters section express differences of opinion, there are occasionally a few that deal with matters of fact. The federal budget is one such factual issue. There was no budget surplus during the eight Clinton budget years, and the nation's deficit increased by approximately 43 percent during his presidential tenure.

Those who choose to dispute that fact should go to the Treasury Department's Website and find the Bureau of Public Debt's numbers. William Ryan. midlothian."

Just tired of seeing uninformed Democrats like the Blaisdell's and tron's misuse of a fabricated CNN story in 2000, to try and save the Clinton legacy.

 's picture

You have got to be kidding Tron...

The Democrats rammed through the health care "reform" bill in both the Senate and the House.  It was a 100% Democrat written and Democrat voted bill.  There was no Republican input and deals done behind closed doors amongst Democrats only.  I don't expect the Republicans to "go along" with the socialists.  I expect them to stand up to socialism at every opportunity.

How do you know, Tron, that the threats aimed at the socialists and sell-outs were made by Republicans?  You are jumping to conclusions.  Let's see what the investigations yield.

I hope the voters of Maine's 2CD vote Michaud back on to the fork lift.  Oh wait.  There might not be a mill left for Mike to return to because part of the health care "reform" included a removal of the tax break on a key chemical used in Maine papermaking that will hit the Maine paper industry hard.  Imagine that, union brothers.  Mike, who depends on the support of the union leadership for his existence as a politician, votes to take food right off the brothers tables.  This aspect of health care "reform" goes conveniently unreported by the Maine newspapers.  I wonder why?
