Bay State man charged with murder of Lewiston woman

BOSTON, Mass. — A Dorchester man was indicted Tuesday, accused of shooting two Lewiston residents in the head last summer, killing one and leaving the other near death.

Amos "Ace" Don, 24, is charged with first-degree murder for the Aug. 25, 2009, slaying of Erica Field, 29, who was found dead in a car next to her boyfriend, who had also been shot.

Don is also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault with intent to murder for the shooting of Field’s boyfriend, Shameek Garcia, now 32.

Don additionally was indicted on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm for the handgun he allegedly used in what police described as a drug deal gone wrong.

Field and Garcia were shot inside a rented car in a Norwell Street truck storage lot, according to a press release issued by District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.

Field, who worked at a hamburger stand in Lewiston, died at the scene. Garcia was left in critical condition, requiring several weeks of hospitalization.

In the months following the shootings, Boston police worked closely with their counterparts in Lewiston. Police said Don had traveled several times between the two cities, before and after the shootings.

On Sept. 29, more than a month after Field was killed, Don was arrested at 977 Lisbon St. and charged with drug trafficking. By then, investigators had begun to suspect him in the slaying, and had begun to monitor his movements.

Lewiston police officers Derek St. Laurent and Carly Conley were assigned to the team of investigators working on the case.

Don was released from the Androscoggin County Jail on the trafficking charge. However, he was arrested a short time later in the Portland area.

With Don in jail, police continued to put together their case against him.

In Massachusetts this week, Conley hailed the efforts of Suffolk prosecutors, Boston Police homicide detectives and members of the Lewiston Police Department since the night of the homicide.

“Investigators here in Boston and in the victims’ hometown committed themselves to a thorough, exhaustive investigation,” Conley said. “A shared effort across jurisdictional lines brought us to this point, developing evidence strong enough to support our burden of proof.”

Prosecutors say that Don and Garcia, accompanied by Field, traveled to Boston on Aug. 25 to obtain drugs for sale in the Lewiston area. Instead, Don allegedly directed them to the Dorchester lot and shot them both in the head.

“This case is about the assailant’s actions, not the victims’ choices in life,” Conley said. “No one deserves to be gunned down in cold blood and left to die in a parking lot far from home.”

If convicted of the murder charge, Don faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, Conley said.

Two months after the incident, Don was arrested on an unrelated federal gun charge. He has since pleaded guilty to that offense and awaits sentencing in U.S. District Court in Maine. His arraignment on the Boston charges, on which additional details are expected to emerge, has not yet been scheduled.

---==== to all the LOSERS ===------

regardless of who you are or what high horse you rode to your computer desk, we all have family the same as erika and shameek.... soooo think about this before you go running your mouth about "who deserves what" think about the fact that you have family and if you wake up get in your car and go to work and die in an accident on your way there, does that mean you deserved it knowing that getting in a car was a risk?!.... c'mon have some decency, these are lives that were lost, whether or not you knew these victims or not, they still left family behind and with that comes sadness. enough said. anyone else who leaves an ignorant comment on this article is just as much of a low life as the one who shot these two.

So thankful that this man will pay for his crimes. IF any of you knew Erica you would know that she was a victim in this whole thing. Ya she made a choice to be around drugs (alot of people do btw most of the people you pay to see in movies or the people you listen to on your mp3 player just for example)  but you know what that doesn't define a person or give anyone the right to shoot you EVER!!  RIP Erica miss you sweetie!!

MbNOdragon.....you sound like

MbNOdragon.....you sound like a friend of the killer posting to defend him.  I hope your friend, Amos Don, finds a friend in jail that likes him a little too much....you know the rest.

As for your comments, they are rude and inconsiderate to the Field family.  They lost their daughter.  You have no right to wish someone dead just because of his or her actions.  Remember no one is perfect, everybody makes mistakes.  Let me guess mbNOdragon, your family is perfect (they have never tried drugs, drank too much, used profanity, been arrested, etc.)  You and your family need an award for being perfect.  I nominate mbNOdragon and his family for perfect citizens of the year.  I hope one day you realize that words do hurt people.  You owe an apology to the Field family.  I am sure they have access to the internet and can read your posts.  How would you feel if your daughter or son died in a tragic accident and someone posted "good he deserved it, i saw him smoking pot at a party, one less loser here on Earth."

MbNOdragon, wake up and smell the coffee, no one is perfect, and I know for darn sure you aren't.

I did not to use your phrase

I did not to use your phrase "wish someone dead" and I do not know the accused. I was merely expressing my opinion, people have choices to make in their lives, when they continually choose the wrong path they must face the consequences.
