A teachable moment, and an old lesson

L'affaire de Gates et Crowley, which has dominated national headlines, has been called a "teachable moment" by President Barack Obama. Unfortunately, by offering his thoughts, the president ignored an old lesson of politics: Sometimes, it's wisest to leave things alone.

There was little need for Obama to interject an opinion into the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. — he said the Cambridge, Mass., police, which included arresting officer Sgt. Jim Crowley — acted "stupidly."

Worse, the president prefaced this by saying that not only is he friends with Gates, but admitted he "didn't know all the facts." Trouble comes when U.S. presidents offer half-informed opinions. For someone with such a sharp political mind, the president made a dull choice in words.

He's trying to make amends, with today's showy offer of beers at the White House. Gates is a Red Stripe man. Crowley favors Blue Moon. All Obama has to drink is a white beer, something wheaty for summer, and the patriotic American brewscape is set.

But there is something contrived and sad about this whole thing. President Obama, in his election, proved this country could transcend race. This watershed seems watered down now that Obama is stooping to restore race relations over lagers.

Life isn't a beer commercial, where a few hours of sudsy socializing not only makes life better, but leads to harmless hijinks and always, always, attention from desirable females. Gates, Crowley and President Obama could imbibe like the guys in the summer blockbuster "The Hangover" and not achieve détente, or even understanding. Respect among races isn't found in the bottom of a glass.

Or, in political gimmicks — come 'round to my place for a beer! — to repair political mistakes. Obama's ill-conceived statements turned up the heat, rather than brightening the light, on the issues surrounding Professor Gates' arrest, turning a local issue into a deafening national debate.

Pressure from outside sources on delicate racial issues is never helpful. Lewiston-Auburn has been burned time and again, whether by idiotic white supremacists trying to make L-A an example of its hateful agenda, or by blow-dried blowhards more interested in ham sandwich jokes than the truth.

Fortunately, when these happened, this community responded. We beat back the hatemongers and untruth-tellers. The ultimate authority for patching rifts caused by heated racial incidents falls with the people who must live with them every day. No outside power can order it. Not even a president, offering a cold brew and a warm invitation.

Obama should have withheld comment. Today's beer garden in the Rose Garden is a scripted repair of a political mistake, not the birth of a new era in race relations in America. That happened last November.

Let Crowley, Obama and Gates drink to that, instead.

So Veritas thinks that

So Veritas thinks that everything stupid obama does can be blown off as a "Bush moment"? Well, I suppose that's fair; if you're a lib. What was Barack drinking in the Rose Garden?; obama light? What goes around comes around. The obama supporters have not even seen the tip of the iceberg of the depth of this guy's stupidity. Four years of him and Bush will look like an erudite prophet.

What a laugh! Bush, who did

What a laugh! Bush, who did more damage to this country than any president in recent history! You Obama bashers are soooo funny. Talk about stupidity, why don't you people just say that your prejudices are the basis for your hate, because your baseless ramblings have nothing to do with reality.

Obama had a very 'Bush' moment when he ran his mouth without having the facts.

Doesn't even equate to your allegation - which was indeed a 'Bush' moment on your part.

Very true Michael, but

Very true Michael, but Obama's happy because it took the spotlight off his terrible plan for ObamaCare...and the public's opinion of him keeps going down! It's nice to see people are beginning to realize he can't meet his grandiose campaign promises.

Hey Jay Bee, Crowley

Hey Jay Bee, Crowley "falsified information in his police report?" Do tell. My favorite line of this "stupidly" written editorial; "Trouble comes when U.S. presidents offer half-informed opinions." Well we had 8 years of that and the SJ never complained!

From what could be gathered

From what could be gathered from various reports, Officer Crowly asked Gates for some ID which was provided and verified by the officer with the college security. Gates then asked Crowly for his name and badge number which apparently Crowly refused to do.

Apparently this happened inside Gates' home. Now consider that a man's home is his castle, so Gates was acting as the King in his castle. But cops are trained to dominate in every situation, so Crowly continued to refuse, because he is trained to be the "alpha male" yet Gates, being the King of the castle feels he is the alpha male and the dog fight ensued. If this is true, then Officer Crowly was wrong and should apologize for not adhering to the law he is supposed to uphold.

Now think, if you were in your home and a cop asked you for, and received, your ID and had it verified, and you then asked for his "ID" which apparently the cop is legally required to give, and the officer refused... Might you get upset that the ?

Now the officer is acting as he has been trained to stay in control- be the alpha male, but he is in your house, your castle, and not complying with the law, would your respect change for this "servant" of the law, who was now breaking the law? Especially if you have been falsely accused, pulled over, etc... in the past just because of your skin color? And if you weren't allowed to get "disorderly" within your own home or on it's front porch, how would you react?

Basically Crowly's training to dominate in every situation, and Gates' experiences as a black man trying to exert his rights within his own home/property, butted heads and the officer than used one of his tools, handcuffs and arrest, to dominate. When possibly all the officer needed to do was give Gates his name and badge number...

Seems like they both acted stupidly... I do have the utmost respect for policemen, as long as they aren't breaking the law, or abusing their power - which is breaking the law...

If a police officer refused to obey the law in my house after I complied with his requests, I probably would get irate too. Wouldn't you?

tron, "placate some white

tron,

"placate some white Americans?" Its not just white Americans. You my friends should do a little research into the reason why the charges were dropped.

The sad part is you probably don't even understand how racist your post is. If you were a police officer and received a call from dispatch regarding a possible break in, how do you think you would respond. let me guess....Oh look there is a guy in the house and the door is broken. Oh wait all I should do is ask to see if its his house and I'll let him go. Excuse me sir...could i see some identification. So you don't want to show me some ID, OK I'll just assume its your house and I'll go back to policing the neighborhood. You see here is the difference between myself and gates. If I forced my way into my house and the police showed up. I would launch in to a tirade and refuse to show ID, I would apologetically, comply to what the officer is asking. I say apologetically because i was raised to respect the law not verbally flip them off in defiance. This whole event would never had made headlines if Gates just given ID.

I find your broad stroke comments of "The The officier stands for what is wrong in this country" biased, venomous and speaks volumns of who you are and what you believe in. You and this viseral view of yours is whats wrong with the country.

B's picture

Robert, your research seems

Robert, your research seems to be incomplete as well... All accounts I've seen say that Gates did provide his ID, they even have the recorded phone call to the Campus Security where Crowly verified that Gates lived in his home. It was Crowly who had refused to tell Gates his name and badge number that seemed to escalate things.

So, Tron. If you were

So, Tron. If you were approached by a police officer because someone in the neighborhood didn't recognize you and called the police just to check out the report of someone breaking into a home, even if it's yours, the police shouldn't be able to question anything? If you took the time to research, you'd find out that the police did everything they were supposed to do,They checked the id of the prof. and found the information checked out. The officers were accosted verbally by the professer after they were leaving the property. He became abusive, and ran his mouth. the officers did what they were supposed to do with abusive people that look like they are going to get out of control. Subdue and secure. Skin color has nothing to do with it. and if you looked at the arrest report you'd find that the first officers on the scene were a black man and a hispanic, Officer Crowley is a supervisor, and showed up after the fact
but the media and the race baiter only saw a white cop hauling away a black man. Al Sharpton needs to get a life. As for BHO. He needs to think before he opens his mouth. where was TOTUS? standing there with a blank screen I'd bet. People are victims only if they let themselves be. Black,White,Native American,Orentiel, who ever.
and obviously you hate the police and I'd bet you also hold anyone in the military with great contempt. I hope you never need the cops for anything. then they'd become someone you need. Transend your hate brother.

It never ceases to amaze me

It never ceases to amaze me how opinions can be made from speculation. The only people who know what happened were the people who were present. I think the President made a big mistake with his comment. I also think he is trying to cover his butt by having them all meet for a beer at the White House. If I were the police officer involved I wouldn't go to make either the professor or the President look good.

I agree MD. If I were

I agree MD. If I were Crowley I'd tell 0bama to go fly a kite. Unless he apologized to the Cambridge Police Department, and personally to Crowley, for his foolish comments I would NOT be joining him to "smooth things over." Obviously, Crowley is a bigger man than 0bama. This is nothing more than a photo-op for "the one" who is so obviously a media whore.

Jay Bee's picture

Actually, based on testimony

Actually, based on testimony and the recording of the call made by Lucia Whalen provided by the Cambridge Police department, it appears that Crowley falsified information on his police report. As such, while it may be a stretch to accuse Crowley (or anyone in this affair) of racism, he did, indeed, act "stupidly."

But here's the kicker - both Crowley AND Gates are part Irish - crazier still, they are distant relatives! So my Celtic genes are telling me that indeed, sitting down and having it out over a beer is the best way to go, although a Guinness would have been the better choice.

I see these throwaway comments about officials being racist propped up by the talking heads on AM radio and Fox news, and all I can think is "it takes one to know one." Further, in a time when "special interests" have become the ONLY interests, we have allowed national discourse to degenerate into a withering barrage of racial innuendo while corporations steal our future away from average Americans and small, locally-owned businesses. This is a clever ruse by the Establishment to blind us to the real problems facing this nation, and it is doing a fine job.

In light of their comments,

In light of their comments, it seems that both Barack Hussein Obama and Prof. Gates are racists. Let's hope tonight is indeed a "teachable moment" for them.

"President Obama, in his

"President Obama, in his election, proved this country could transcend race." if this is so why is it necessary for the President to try and placate some white Americans by showing that he can be friendly with the "biased" policeman? The officier stands for what is wrong in this country and yet instead of being fired he gets to have a beer with the President of the United States. Maybe we haven't transcended anything. The truth lies in that the charges were dropped immediately once cooler heads prevailed. The man's only crime was he was black.
