Rescuers recount pit bull mauling, rescue

LIVERMORE FALLS — The child was screaming and blood was everywhere as a pit bull savagely bit him on the neck, abdomen and legs.

Pattie Reaves/Sun Journal

Britany Paskell describes helping Sarah Roy bring a severely mauled 11-year-old victim of a pit bull attack to Paskell's house to wait for an ambulance to arrive.

Pattie Reaves/Sun Journal

Raymond Roy pulled the pit bull off an 11-year old boy and saved his life. He beat the dog back with a chair and a lamp.

Pattie Reaves/Sun Journal

Sarah Roy, a neighbor of the pit bull keeper, was one of the first adults to arrive on the scene of the pit bull attack.

Neighbor Raymond Roy got word of the attack and went to the rescue. When he arrived, the dog was on top of the boy chewing his legs in the hallway. Both boy and dog were covered in blood, Roy said.

“I was frantic to find a weapon,” he said. He grabbed a chair and threw it at the dog.

Roy and others did what they had to do to save the 11-year-old's life, they said Wednesday.

The boy from New York was on vacation from school, visiting family friends at the mobile home park on Globe Street in Livermore Falls on Tuesday when the dog attacked.

Neighbors Sarah Roy and her husband, Raymond, and Britany Paskell and Josh Harlow were all home, which was unusual, they said.

They were alerted there was a pit bull attack going on in the park and started to run. They knew that the only pit bull in the park, which they say is against the park’s rules, had attacked Jessica Anderson’s teenage son at her home earlier in the month.

When Raymond Roy arrived at Anderson's home and threw a computer desk chair at the dog, it dropped down and rolled back about 3 feet, he said. But then the dog shook it off and grabbed the boy’s arm.

Roy searched for another weapon and grabbed a lamp with a post.

“I repeatedly struck the dog on the head,” Roy said. Between hits, he and Paskell were able to pull the boy away from the dog.

Paskell said she dragged the boy to the doorway in the living room while Roy kept the dog at bay.

“I never took my eyes off the dog’s eyes for a second," Roy said. "I kept jabbing the dog. I just tried to keep him from going past me.”

Sarah Roy said she grabbed blankets and took a shoelace from a sneaker to make a tourniquet to tie around the knee area of the boy’s left leg to stop the bleeding from a deep wound below.

She grabbed the bassinet-top from a pack-n-go crib to use as a stretcher.

Roy said she had a little training and watched medical shows and is a Cub Scout Den mother but had never tied a tourniquet before.

“I was petrified and instinct just kicked in,” she said.

They wrapped the boy in blankets, got him on the makeshift stretcher and moved him out the door.

Many people helped carry him out the door down to Paskell’s and Harlow’s trailer.

“He kept telling us, 'Please don’t let me die; save me,'” Harlow said.

They followed instructions from Androscoggin County emergency dispatchers and tended to the boy until an ambulance arrived.

Back at Anderson's home, Raymond Roy said he saw a red laser light pointed at the dog and realized a police officer had arrived and had his Taser trained on the dog.

When only Roy, the dog and Livermore Falls police officer Vern Stevens were left in the home, Stevens suggested they start slowly backing out the door, with the Taser and the lamp still in their hands.

“We got out of the house," Roy said. "We closed the storm door and the bottom of the storm door fell apart and that’s when the dog started to lunge, and that’s when (Stevens) Tasered him.” Roy closed the steel door to the home, securing the dog inside.

Anderson' s 12-year-old daughter was baby-sitting the 11-year-old victim, as well as her two siblings, ages 7 and 3 months, when the attack occurred. Anderson and the boy’s father, Garry Thomsen, had gone to visit a friend.

The boy never cried during the attack and was brave through the whole ordeal, Sarah Roy said.

I absolutely commend these

I absolutely commend these people for helping...what I dont commend is the harrassment this woman is getting. The people who helped saved this young boys life are now trying to attack the woman who harbored this animal and her children. I think the children have been through enough without the local trailer trash trying to beat their mother up physically with her children watching. Be heroes and leave the matter be. Dont make her children go through more trauma by harrassment and abuse.

Speaking of animal abuse

Speaking of animal abuse perhaps Snoringdogs should be investigated for shooting their dogs for something that could be dealt with by placing the dog in a loving home willing to work with their animal rather than shooting them when they can't handle them

Great Article Real Heroes

Great Article, the people that jumped in to help are real heroes...Pitbulls do have a very bad rep.  Would I own one??  Absolutely NOT, although I know many that are great dogs, It is all in how a dog is raised, many people raise these dogs to be fighting machines, and abuse the dogs, generally speaking these are the ones that make the entire breed have a bad reputation....the work of a few....

True blessing that these neighbors were home & able to jump in and save this boy from dying...

It wasn't her dog, she was

It wasn't her dog, she was just keeping it for someone else. Riiiiiiight. And she was a good mother - keeping "someone else's" dog even after it bit her child.  These dogs are a big white trash middle finger to the world. Did anyone check the trailer for other animals like venomous snakes?

Clearing things up

I am the proud owner of 3 y/o American Pitbull Terrier named Rico. I am not a drug dealer, not a thug. I work a professional 9-5 job and so does my signifigant other. When people meet us they are suprised that Rico is a "pitbull". He weighs 48 pounds(The weight of true "pitbulls", larger dogs are not pure breed but usually mixed with some form of mastiff) and thinks everyone wants to be his best friend.

I just want to clear a few things up about this breed. How you feel about owning them is your opinion but I just would like to provide some facts.

- There is no such breed as a "pit bull". This is a term used to describe many dogs in the molosser family of dogs, most notably the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pitbull Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

- Contrary to popular belief these dogs shouldn't need to be "raised right" to be friendly. They are by nature extremely loving and loyal to people, their family and strangers alike. Due to their history(being bred for fighting), most, if not all will display aggression toward other dogs, this cannot be trained out, but responsible owners can manage it. Human aggression however CAN NOT BE TOLERATED.

- For those "pitbull" owners who are mad that this dog was put to sleep. You are wrong, a pitbull that displays ANY aggression toward a human needs to be PTS. Agression towards humans shows they don't have a sound temperment and are most likely living their life in fear.

- Due to their aggression towards other dogs and their high energy these dogs are not for everyone. In fact, I, as an APBT owner despise 90% of other "pitbull" owners I meet. These dogs must remain on a leash at all times, and do not belong in dog parks or other uncontrolled dog meeting situations.

We have won many people over through their visits with Rico, and hopefully these facts will change some of your minds about these dogs.

A reputation is something

A reputation is something that is earned be it good  or bad. Pitbulls plain and simple have a bad reputation and the reputation is well earned. There is no reason to have one except to bully others with it. This is a breed of dog that is not needed and should be terminated. These dogs and variants or mixed breeds of these dogs should be outlawed.

ONLY_GOD_CAN_JUDGE_ME's picture

Just a bad rap....

It is horrible that this poor child was mauled by a dog that im sure was mistreated by someone. Im not blaming the current owner but who knows what this dog has endured....and now its dead because someone mis treated it. When will euthanisia become legal for humans?

This Is Terrible but.................

The dog was only 1 year old? I guess this was lucky for all.
Never let your friend leave a Pit Bull with you in a trailer park that is OFF LIMITS to those dogs.
I stilll want to know what led up to the attack? Was it the boy was unfamiliar to the dog or did the boy do something to the dog?
Also yesterday they said the dog was in it's kennel?
I also think the Pit bulls get a bad reputation and it's the backyard breeders and stupid owners that are at fault, not the dogs.

Wow!

Amazing story, brought me to tears.  Wonderful neighbors.  It sounds like they did everything to save this boy & to calm him when needed.  I'm sure he felt safe & loved once they got there.  Excellent job.  I hope you have the opportunity to see this little boy again & give him a big hug!  I hope that his parents are appreciative of your efforts.

Owner responsibility??

I think it is too bad that Pitbulls almost always get a bad reputation and most people lump all pitbulls together as "bad".  As this was a very unfortunate thing that happened I think people need to step back and look at the owners.  The owners are responsible for this pet and they obviously did something wrong.  Dogs react to their environment and what they were taught--from their owners.  I have had, and continue to have, pitbulls as pets and none of them have EVER lunged, bit, acted in anyway aggressive to a person or another animal.  I just think it is too bad that we only hear the horrible stories about pitbull attacks and never anything good about them.  We also never seem to hear the stories about other dog breeds attacking; and they do attack.  Anyway, just my opinion.

cmhoughton's picture

owner repsonsibility

I agree with Pink. There are not bad dogs, just bad, badly informed or irresponsible owners.  All dogs, but especially large and strong dogs, need good and consistent training.  And no really strong dog (including pit bulls, german sheherds, rottweilers, etc.) should be left alone with children too young to control them.  Pit bulls do get a bad rap, and that is unfortunate.  They can be wonderful pets and family members like any other dog.

ojhuig's picture

It is not the animal control

It is not the animal control officer's job to come and kill your pet. A vet would do this for you, or take the dog to the animal shelter where they will retrain, re-home or euthanize.

Jericho's picture

First let me say,  there is a

First let me say,  there is a terrible thing that happened and I am blown away the owners of the dog didn't do something the first time this dog attacked someone.  I agree with you Pink...  I think we need to look at the owners of the dog in a tragedy such as this and not the breed.  Unfortunately, that is difficult sometimes.  The next time you are around Lewiston, take a look at the average person walking a pit bull down the street.   It is how the dogs are raised.  In fact, the original bull terriers from England were known as Nanny dogs because they are so good with children.  Again, this was an awful thing and I hope the boy pulls through this OK.

ME2's picture

Im grateful to the neighbors

Im grateful to the neighbors for saving this child's life, but I just want to let you know that she did try to have the dog put down after the first attack. She literally cried to the animal control officer for help in putting the dog down, he refused to help so she was trying to find the dog a different home. I wish they published the whole story with all the facts so people didnt have to speculate and make up their own versions of the story. Again, the neighbors are absolutely heroes for saving this boy's life.

TRIED?!

so ... no one had a gun? I mean, I had a beagle with severe separation anxiety issues, and when that lush of a vet refused to put her down, my husband and I took her out to Meadowview and did it ourselves. And SHE was just a beagle!! she didn't attack anyone or anything other than the inside of the house and herself.

to find that pit (and my beagle) a new home is horribly irresponsible. sometimes death IS the best resolution

ONLY_GOD_CAN_JUDGE_ME's picture

Seriously???

You shot a dog because it had separation issues?!?! Thats an outragious reason to shoot a dog. You should have trained it, medicated it or given it up....do you want to shoot your friends because they make you mad? Trying to find it a new home that has more experience and/or knowledge would have been the BEST RESOLUTION!!!....not DEATH!!!!!

Pitbull

ANYONE who has a pitbull is twisted and stupid, especially if there are children in the home.    And...what about an 11 year old boy being left alone with a baby and a pitbull?!?!?  What's wrong with that picture?!?!?  These parents should be charged with negligence!

Thanks God for the wonderful neighbors who saved the day!  They are truly heroes!  Kudos to all of you.

Susan2's picture

PLEASE - You Are An Idiot!

ANYONE who has a pitbull is twisted and stupid?????

Normal families have Pit Bulls! The problems are the teenagers and druggies that TEACH them to attack! Also bad breeders are at fault.

I say anyone who dated or married YOU is twisted and stupid!

Heroes, Truly Heroes

Britany Paskell, Raymond Roy, Sarah Roy, and Josh Harlow - you are heroes! It is at times like this when we learn what the meaning of "neighbor" truly is. This story would have had a far worse ending if you had not been there or if you had not acted quickly, bravely, and intelligently.

I would be proud to have people like you for neighbors. And I would feel a lot safer. Thank You and God Bless you all!
