Maine bill allows 8 marijuana dispensaries

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A bill to set up a dispensary and distribution system under Maine's medical marijuana law is awaiting a final Senate vote.

The House voted 126-17 in favor of the bill Monday following a debate in which defenders stressed the importance of the drug as a palliative. Opponents questioned whether the state should expand access to a drug that's banned on the federal level.

Maine is one of 13 states that allows medical use of marijuana. But there was no formal system for obtaining the drug other than growing small amounts until last November, when voters expanded a decade-old medical marijuana law.

The bill before the Legislature allows up to eight dispensaries, and sets a process to establish fees for patients, caregivers and dispensaries.

I'm guessing the clinics will

I'm guessing the clinics will be up for about 3 days before the FBI will raid it to try to make some money. We need to legalize it at a federal level - legalizing it on a state by state basic only subjects them to bullying by federal agents. The reason why cannabis was even criminalized was because a few powerful, greedy men's empires were threatened by the hemp plant. marijuana conspiracy <-- this article does a good job of explaining how that happened. One of the government's most successful tricks up its sleeves are taxing things that they deem morally reprehensible. The people always subscribe to this because they're afraid of being judged by others that are also subscribing to these, i guess "misinformed ideologies," and give the gov more and more control over our personal lives. We live in an age of gov induced hypersensitivity, and now any little annoyance that is able to be stigmatized w/ propaganda is indulged as a legitimate problem. Pretty soon they're going to start persecuting ppl for wearing white, since it reflects light the best and technically would put the ppl around them at a greater risk for skin cancer (bad example, I know, because at least cancer has been proven to harm your health, unlike weed). Yea, it's ridiculous sounding, but the logic is exactly the same as ppl that can't stand being around smokers. The government is the one instilling a sense of corporeality and attachment to our bodies, which is just another exercise in using fear (the only thing that governments are good at) as well as an attempt at preserving our bodies to increase productivity to the state (what other governments were health nuts for this same reason? oh yea, the nationalist socialist party). The same goes for the way the gov targets certain items to hike up the taxes on, such as "sin taxes." Like almost all laws passed in this country, there's always some corporate bullshit behind it. I took a free smoking cessation class back when I was in college, and it seemed like they legitimately wanted to help me until they started throwing expensive teeth whitening products at us at the end. (I remember one of the brands was malibu bright, which is by no means a cheap complimentary toothbrush if that's what you were picturing). They should just call it "the government needs an excuse to take more of our money" tax

Last time I checked when I

Last time I checked when I voted "yes" this fall I did not instruct the legislature to add any limits they saw fit.

Once the state accepts that

Once the state accepts that pot is a medicine by opening dispensaries the a federal can be applied to which medical care can not be out of reach which means it must be within a resonable distance for a person to access it therefore the department who will oversee such matters will be sued quite soon as 8 will be an unresonable area to access the medication. Man I wish our legislators would read follow  the laws we must follow!!!

I say have a lotto for all

I say have a lotto for all the people who want to open a dispensary and are qualified such as a lic. phamicist in each county this way a dispensary can not be brought and if they choose to give up thier site then again it must be spun off the bussiness can not be transfered that would be fair!!!

OH I agree this is needed

OH I agree this is needed Medical marijuana has tons of uses!! I guess my point is any time you limit free enterprise, like only allowing 8 in the whole state, you limit access and competition. Mark my words all 8 will be owned by one company and it will be a very  politically connected "favorite son" who will be allowed to control this "Pot Monopoly".

Cmon now lets be Reasonable.

Maybe a state Senators Child will open a Dispensary.(seems a strange comment to me ) . But I believe these dispensaries have been a long time coming . We have Voted on it several Times and the time has come to hear the words of the PEOPLE of MAINE . Do I want Medocal marijuana for myself?. No , because I don't suffer any of the illness's that it helps . But I have seen family members , friends and many worldwide who have suffered without it's medicinal relief . I applaud ( I can't believe Im saying this) Arnald Swartenaeger for even considering DECRIMINALIZING  Marijuana all together and get there state out of DEBT.

Hell Cigarettes Kill 100's of thousands yearly and do nuthin for u . And we Tax the ever livin hell out of em . I personally say raise em again . MORE WILL QUIT .But Marijuana can be a great relief to patients and a great relief to MAINES Economy .

open 16!!!

Availability of medicine to the people

I am glad that now there is now legislation that brings the availability of a much needed medicine to a body of people that probably had to go without or had to go through some times shady dealers (even if it's illegal). Power to the people and all that jazz.

hmmm

how about crack for fat people that eat too much
