Poisonous atmosphere

Today, the Republican Party is recognized as the party of greed and, more recently, of "just say no." Its leaders revolt when any social program is suggested.

This selfish behavior seems to be part of its manifesto. It is a sad truth, but of late, members have added an even more sinister label to themselves — that of the party of hate.

Their spokesmen can be heard loud and clear every day spewing their diatribe of bigotry and hatred over the airways to the gullible and ignorant among us.

We hear outbursts from them in Congress that demean their fellow statesmen, the president, and any individual who dares to disagree with them.

Like the bully in the schoolyard who beats up anyone who dares get in his way, they use fear as a weapon to dissuade anyone who may have an opposing point of view.

Unfortunately, Maine's two senators are in lockstep with them. They seem to care more about how much the special interest groups are putting into their coffers than the welfare of their constituents.

There was a time when some middle ground could be found; when both parties could share in a bipartisan way for the benefit of all.

Today, the poisonous atmosphere of opposing ideologies seems to make that impossible.

I'm concerned that until voters start electing representatives who want to work for the common good, instead of their own selfish interests, the road ahead looks very bleak for all of us.

Bob, Bigelow's a 'Research' lab

Bob, Bigelow's a 'Research' lab.

But I would imagine the fruits of their research will actually be contributing to the good of society in a lesser time span that it took you to develop and be productive.

By your post - you obviously were incapable of dealing with long-term concepts.

Bob - You really need to get out more often.

And are you aware that Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences teamed up recently with the Boston-based renewable energy company Bodega Algae to develop technology to speed up the algae-growing process?  In doing so, Bigelow joined the race to make algae-based fuels commercially viable.

As it pursues its research, Bigelow is also finalizing plans to build a new campus and deep-water landing on 64 acres of woodlands in East Boothbay. The laboratory is obtaining permits for what will be called the Bigelow Center for Blue Biotechnology.

It expects to break ground this summer and complete the first phase of a multi-building project in 2011. The laboratory is now seeking economic stimulus funds and private donations to complete the next phase of its campus."

Bigelow's been around for over 35 years, and presently has fifty employees and scientists in it's West Boothbay Harbor digs.

You need to get out of L/A a bit and find out that there's a world out there - and that those stimulus $$$ do some good.

Nice 3rd grade tactic there, Bob - "Obummer"

Nice 3rd grade tactic there, Bob - "Obummer"

Stimulus has been alive and well in Boothbay, funds to the Water District for infrastucture improvements doubling  water main capacity out to the boatyards (remember Washburn & Doughty Fire of '08) - money for the boatyards, research projectds, etc.

Perhaps the difference is that we have some 'progressive' officials and administration here who went after it, unlike the ones in Lewiston who were busily concerning themselves with Witch Hunts - cough - cough.

Party of Financial Responsibility?? Ha!!

Party of Financial Responsibility??

That's how the Republican have packaged themselves.  But is it the truth?

From the end of World War II until the Reagan Administration, each administration, including Democrats Kennedy, Johnson and Carter reduced the national debt by running surpluses.

We did not start running up massive debt until the Reagan years.  During his first term, he increased the debt 7.3% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) - his second term - a whopping 11.2% of GDP.

With Bush I it gets worse, the debt goes up 12.2 of GDP.

Enter Clinton; during his first term, the debt still goes up, but at a much more manageable rate of only 3% GDP.  During his second term, the debt is reduced by 9.8% GDP

Now comes Bush II - the Republicans again.  Does the debt continue downward?  Of course not.  It is raised 5.6% GDP his first term, and 6.3% GDP his second term.  But there's war you might say - yet the debt was significantly reduced during all of Vietnam.

Read it and weep.  The Republicans just can't handle money.  They cry for fiscal responsibility - but simply can't deliver.  It's all Bull.

Assuming what you say is

Assuming what you say is accurate, and I have no reason to doubt that it is, why are obama, a democrat, and his current regime, mostly democrats, being so deviant from Kennedy, Johnson and Carter?

RONALD RIML's picture

Neither Kennedy, Johnson, nor

Neither Kennedy, Johnson, nor Carter upon their Inaugeration were handed any economic disaster so globally devastating as the 2008 Financial Crisis.

Not exactly a small matter. And unlike the Vietnam War, which was funded while it was being fought - the Bush Administration kept requesting unfunded budget supplementals from a compliant congress which have been passed on.

Obama certainly has to keep spending money to get the economy going again, but they also need to again start taxing at the old rates which were in effect before Reagan slashed them and drove us into the deficits.
