Firefighters and emergency personnel work to free a person trapped in a vehicle involved in a fatal accident on Sabattus Street in Lewiston on Friday.
LEWISTON — A Sabattus woman died Friday morning when the SUV she was driving rear-ended a garbage truck at the intersection of Sabattus Street and Randall Road.
Danielle Perrier, 33, was traveling west when she crashed into the back of a recycling truck owned by Pine Tree Waste and driven by John Lizotte, who was stopped at a red light, police said.
A dozen or more fire, rescue and police crews from Auburn, Lewiston and United Ambulance responded to the accident scene shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Rescue crews had to dismantle the Ford SUV to extricate Perrier. Her two children — a 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl — suffered minor injuries. They were removed quickly from the vehicle and were treated and released, police said.
Three doors, the roof and seats of the SUV were removed during the extrication process. A child's car seat was removed along with a red and yellow Little Tykes toy car.
Perrier was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Lewiston police officers investigated the scene through the morning. State Police also responded because a commercial vehicle was involved in the accident. And because it was a fatality, it was reconstructed.
Police said they did not know why Perrier drove into the truck, and no citation was issued. Sabattus Street east of Randall Road was closed for some time while police were at the scene.

What is believed to have happened
My life long friend suffered from MS that was not controlled. She had been in a lot of pain w/ her legs. It is believed that her legs got jammed to where she was able to move it and unable to brake due to her MS. So sad and she is truely missed . =(

Well respectfully this is a news article posted at a newspaper website and it allows for discussion. Discussing possibilities of irresponsible driving resulting in a death and two kids whoi do not have a mother are legitimate discussions.
This isn't a memorial thread or an obituary. To tell people they are mean for asking an honest question is completely ridiculous as well as being so politically correct it warrants ridicule as well. Nobody stated they DID it, they just wondered and stated they would not be surprised if there was a cell phone involved since not paying attention while driving which causes accidents happens to be a cell phone as the leading cause of them seconded by children distracting their parents by arguing in the back seat.
People are not allowed to wonder what caused this without some meathead telling them to walk the plank in here?

A guy got shot during a robbery too in Maine this week, lets not discuss it because a family member might read how the store owner was wrong for having someone working alone and it could have been prevented.

Im not gonna sit here and make responses to the arguing that seems to be going across this board pretty quickly. I was one of the first people on that site, the crash musta happend a few seconds before i peaked that hill coming from the side of sabattus st where sam's is. As i came over the driver waved me down and i got out to do what i could. we got both the kids out fine, and on a side note this is a HUGE reason those seats are so crucial.
It is a terrible shame what these kids will go through for the rest of their life but the fact of the matter is, i forsee this being a completely avoidable situation. For that woman to have created a crash with such force, especially if the light was red, she had to have been driving with extreme dis-caution to her, and the people around her. The thing that REALLY gets me, is the fact i held onto that 5 year old girl for the first 5 minutes or so till the wonderful people across the street took them inside, and after asking her if she was hurt, and pointing to her chest to indicate so, the only words that came outa her mouth were "We Crashed Again"
again my heart goes out to the family and friends of this young woman and children. people please for gods sake, pay more attention while ur driving.

I can't believe how many of you try to instantly make blame towards this women. She lost her life and her children and family lost part of their lives!! This is tragic and all you are worried about is if she was texting, not paying attention, etc. You know, don't try to make the story, keep your dramatic theories to yourself and face that you could be very wrong for judging this women. Maybe she wasn't texting. Maybe she had a health issue, or fainted for some reason. There are so many possibilities, but yet you people who are undoubtably filled with ignorance, are so quick to judge!
With that said I would like the family and friends of Danielle to know I am sorry for your loss, and wish the best for her 2 children. I can't imagine the pain you all are going through. I wish all of you strength and my deepest sympathies.
Also, very little was mentioned about the driver of the truck, but I do wish him the best and hope all will be well with him.

No a DOT is not required for this truck because the truck DOES NOT come equiped with the add on container on the back it is an add-on, However if at least I can bring this up this may make them do something to stop this in the future. She did not hit her head on the windshield she slamed her head into a metal barrier the D.O.T. bumper would have stopped her windshield from ever comming in contact with the truck look at the picture there really is not enough damage to sustain that she was speeding recklessly the damage is in line with the speed limit it does show however that the truck simply went right under that thing in the back if it was a car it probably would have decapatated those in the front So I do hope that they do remedy this as soon as possible. This is a sorry day for the families of the victim and the victims husband as well as the children they will have nightmares for thier entire lives and my sympathies go out to them, may they recover from thier wounds and remember thier daughter, Wife, and mother will always be in thier hearts forever more.

I have read most of the comments on this terrible accident and I cant read any more. I am disappointed that at a time of tragedy for a family, people are arguing in the comments section. Regardless of what this woman was doing at the time of the crash, she has died and two small children no longer have their mother to raise them or tuck them into bed at night.
As for the comments regarding the PTW waste truck possibly being unsafe, I was an employee of PTW for 4 years and I can assure you that they follow all safety guidelines when it comes to their vehicles. I am sure that the driver of the PTW truck is very shooken up about this whole accident and my heart goes out to him and his family as well.
None of us know the reason for the accident so calm down and let the family have their grieving time. They dont need to pull up the comments and see people judging in their time of mourning. Have some respect!
To the family of the woman and her children and also to the driver of the waste truck, may God be with all of you.

I'm in tears as I read this article. I saw the recycling truck being towed away as I drove home from work. As soon as I walked through the door, my mother called me to tell me the news.
As sad as this is, it makes me more sad to see some of the heartless comments people post in this news forum. Yes it's true that this is a public forum, but for Heaven's sake, use your common sense if you have any! Just because it is a public forum, doesn't mean that you can't use your brain before posting something here, knowing that relatives and other people who care about these people will read it. Some people are just so STUPID!
@Megatrends, you made a direct assumption that the young woman who died was using a cell phone. Then in another post, you said that is not what you meant. If you don't mean it, then don't post it.
@Autoracingnut-Who are you, the village idiot? Lighten up? A young 33 year old woman died today, leaving her two very young children motherless. Who cares if the sun was in her eyes or not? You're comments were crude and insensitive. Ask yourself, what if this woman were your sister, or friend? How would you feel right now?
People who post here may want to think about walking in another person's shoes and getting all the facts straight before they go shooting their mouths off here. Some of you forget that this is a COMMUNITY, and that none of us are immune to this type of tragedy. It could happen to any of us at any time.
@Myfamily you are well within your rights to be hurt and upset by some of the comments in this forum. Please know that for every negative untruth posted here, thousands of others will be praying for your family, your loss and for the young children who just lost their mother. You are certainly in my prayers.

I clearly stated that IT WOULD NOT SURPRISE ME if a cell phone was found on the floor open for texting. I never said she was but it would not surprise me given the amount of accidents involving rearending type accidents from speeding and not paying attention. I live on this street and these rearenders happen every week LITERALLY. I have almost been hit just waiting to turn into my driveway at least twice so far.
Over the last few years I have passed this trash truck parked exactly where it was hit while on its route picking up recylables. I just cannot conceive anyone driving into it unless they were speeding and/or being distracted. Take just one of those away and this woman would still be alive.
Even if distracted by kids, spilled coffee or whatever else this accident should not have happened on such a straight away with no parking on the sides. There can only be 3 possibilities, speeding, distraction or alcohol.
I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I just live on this street and see this all the time, the police thankfully pull people for speeding very often here. It would be very unlikely that a person driving within the speed limit would be in this severe of an accident.
I'm sure the results of the investigation will be released at some point.

The problem is that as stupid as you are for posting something so asinine, there are a hundred people in this city as stupid as you are who will believe it for truth, and those 100 people will tell 10other stupid people they know who will also believe it for the truth. And those ten people will tell 10 other people, and on and on. Then before the investigation is over with, the woman is chastised, even in her death, and people will believe that she was texting, even if this is not true and she isn't even here to defend herself. So, I really don't care what you see on a daily basis on your street, the truth is you don't really know if she was texting, or if she had a seizure, or a diabetic attack, or if she was rushing one of the children to the hospital. So, if you don't know, don't put it into a public forum, because that is how rumors get started. The next time you log on here and comment on such a tragedy, you may want to consider employing your frontal cortex before making any statements about what you think "might have probably happened", and if you read the other comments on this post, there is no way you are winning this argument.

I simply stated it would not surprise me if a cell phone was involved since driving into the back a huge garbage truck that fast enough to cause this much damage seems out of the ordinary and having lived on this street for years and seeing many accidents like this was which are virtually all caused by either cell phones or not paying attention I simply made a comment about it so get over it.
Lets say someone gets shot by accident, articles in here get responses like "That guy should have known better what a dolt". It is a news story, obviously some family member may see it. I didn't even do that for crying out loud.
people are so damned touchy these days, well too bad. I've done nothing wrong to begin with and people like you are making me feel like I have .... wrongly I might add. Let's just assume for a moment that you are capable of using your frontal cortex and therefore able to take the perspective of someone else, putting yourself in their shoes. I know that's a stretch, but just go with it for a few minutes. Now, go back and read your original statement, only this time, pretend this woman is YOUR sister, or your daughter, or cousin, or friend, or niece, or your own mother.
Just because a thought pops into your brain, doesn't mean that it has to come out of your mouth, or transferred to your fingers to be typed in a public forum. A real sad day for many, and to those who blame the driver really should look at the truck if it was a regular truck it would not have happened and I dont think speed had anything to do with it either So Why??? well if you make a truck with a high lift you need to put in bars it sort of looks like two Ls together so cars cant go underneath this safety mech. was mandated after a famous actress was killed in like the 50's I guess its like seat belts we are all required to wear them except of course our children going to school in buses without them guess if it is the city state or fed you dont have to comply right? That truck should be taken off the road why is the thing in the back like that or is it something they mollyhocked in which case they would be guilty of total negligence to the tune of tens of millions someone should look into that.

I have been reading all the comments from everyone and it is pretty sad... I came upon this accident just a minute after it happened when they were taking the two little kids to the building across the street. The look on the little boys face was so sad because he kept looking at the SUV while being carried by some gentleman. The driver of this truck had nothing to do with what happened and the type of vehicle it is. He was sitting at a light that has been there and was red. It was quite obvious when I saw the SUV that she ran into it at quite the force, and I could see the accident scene way before I got to the corner. This is not a blind corner and driver inattention was the cause, whatever that was. We will probably never know, but two precious children are without a mother. So sad :(

Some people can be very ignorant, being miles away from the accident scene and having no idea. I am here and saw it, after the fact. I am very disturbed and feel for this family, YES people speed, they talk, they text, they eat, they put make-up on! Until the investigation is complete we wouldn't know what caused this tragedy. Those poor little kids lost their Mommie. The intersection is very dangerous and should be policed more frequently during "rush hour". It is crazy.

I know the Fire Department did a great job getting her out and to the Hospital ASAP! we provide them with vehicles and they train and practice their life saving skills with their tools here, many times each year.
We set up mock accidents for them to train, different each time so they never know what they are going to find when they get here. alway different type of vehicles, so they get to use different types of tools to practise their timing and training to help save lives.
Then a Accident like this happens and there is fatal results, its heart breaking to say the lease.

This however is a public forum open to all discussion. I live on this street and am surprised this is the first fatality this year. People are wreckless, not being specific to your relative.
I can only go by what I see and more importantly did not say she was using a cell phone. I said it would not surprise me if she was texting someone on a cell phone.

I live around the Black Shark just up the road and can tell all of you there are several rearend accidents on Sabattus street because people do not see stopped or waiting to turn vehicles WHILE TEXTING ON THE PHONE.
I am not exaggerating, at least one accident a week on Sabattus street alone.
The other problem is that the speed limit is 35 mph and people literally do 50 to 60 mph. Cops pull people over all day long here.
But really this is something we talk about in this household because we actually watch for cars in the rearview with a foot ready on the gas just in case we see someone not slowing behind us while waiting to turn into our driveway which can take some time when traffic is heavy.
This will not surprise me if the police investigators find an open text message on a cell phone in the vehicle. trust me when i say this the only time sun issues are a problem are at dusk and they are not enough to drive into a trash truck that has its hazard lights flashing.

I live very close to the accident scene, in fact all the traffic is being rerouted by my house. It is very horrific to see this SUV with no roof and a toddlers riding toy on the side of Sabattus St. No matter what happened, this is tragic. Those two little children may have lost their Mother. God be with them all..
You can take all the driver refresher courses you want, but when God says it's time, it's time. No course will prevent that.

the sun could not be used as an excuse, even it if was sunny. Ever since the reconstruction of Sabattus Street it has become a speedway. Going westward and coming to that intersection there's a small hill. There's plenty of time to stop if you're paying attention, however there were two small kids in the back seat and a little distraction was all that was necessary. When that light was placed there, comments were made about the danger, but the value of the light was considered worth it. People must pay attention when driving, at all times.

Do you live on this street? If you do know that I do too and know what you are talking about. I cannot remember the last time someone was doing the speed limit of 35 mph. I see a lot of people screaming past stopped school busses too unfortunately. it stops outside my house everyday and people go by at 50 mph without even slowing down when people are beeping at them for passing a stopped school bus.

but I grew up on Dow Ave. during the fifties and sixties, so I've seen the street developed. Thorne's Corner was always accident prone, and it abated slightly when they put a light there. But once they improved Sabattus, the road became a speedway, with corresponding accidents. All it takes is one distraction and tragedy results.

That trash truck incident. Im not sure if you are aware...but russel st, which is where it happened, early in the morning, is very hard to see when it's sunny.
And im not sure if you also remember, that woman that hit that trash truck, it killed her son.
So next time, think before you write something like that.

it wasn't russell street it was sabattus just up from roopers. it's a busy intersection and people are always in a hurry to be the first through the light. The speed limit is only 30 but everyone goes 50 or more.

Which is why a flippant comment about making excuses was in particularly poor taste. Especially since you made it before you had all the facts.
Accidents are called that for a reason. The results are horrible this time, but rushing to judgement about the hows and why helps not at all. IF she had survived, and IF she had made a lame excuse, then your comment and disgust would be appropriate.
As it stands, you're just the wank who shot his mouth off. There's really no point in trying to defend yourself about it.

My comment was made before verification that the driver died. There has been accidents there before similar to this one where the driver that hit the trash truck claimed that the glare from the sun caused them to not see the HUGE trash truck in front of them.
Either way.. you're coming up onto an intersection, you should be slowing down and paying attention regardless of anything else!
It's very sad, but there are far too many drivers in this world that don't pay attention... kids, phones, radios, pets, etc.. are distracting them in some form and/or they don't know what a turning signal is for! It's getting bad out there. There should be some kind of mandatory test for drivers to take every 10 years or a refresher course.. something!

My driver was just coming out of Cumberland Farms herd the crash, it was up the street at the light in front of the old Galaxy, he seen it was major, he dropped his coffee ran up the street to help. there were several people who who did not hesitate to help, he said there a Ford Explorer driven right up under the recycling truck. A woman driver who seemed to be hurt very bad and two little girls in car seats in the back, thank God! he said "those car seats saved those children" the other people took the little ones out. he directed the traffic away from the scene until the Police, Fire and Ambulance arrived. they cut off the roof and the doors to get the woman out of the wreck. he does not believe the driver would make it! the State Police came, they called another tow company to tow the vehicles.

How truly sad and ignorant of those that feel that they can judge someone's actions when in fact they have absolutely no idea what happened! I guess it depends where your head is at. Being a mother of two, young children, I am greatly saddened to hear of the loss of the childrens' mother no matter what transpired. She will no longer be a part of their lives, just a faint memory for children so young. The thought of my children losing me at such a young age is heart wrenching! The thought of my husband left without a partner to raise the children leaves a deep void in my heart and I'm sure in her husband's as well.
So, rather than passing judgement, as many often do when they have not had the same life experience, stop and think! This event will effect those involved for the rest of their lives. It is a great loss for Danielle's children, husband, brother, parents, extended family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Also, I am sure the rescue workers will also be effected by this event for a long time. How can one not be?
Please send condolences and prayers, this is not judgement day! This event is what it has been called....a tragic accident! If you don't have positive, supportive thoughts to share, don't bother to share any!

This is very sad!! Everyone should be praying for this lady who has passed...and praying for those little ones in the car seats and for the family and friends of the victim of this terrible Accident!!! When I hear something like this, after being in several automobile accidents myself...I thank the Lord I am here...and that no one was ever killed in those car accidents...For the folks who are so judgemental out there remember one thing- they are called Accidents!!! I am so sorry for this lady and for her family and friends.. It must of been awful to witness such a horrible accident- at the same time I think its courageous for people to step in and try to help the victims involved!!! What a terrible tradgedy :(

That was my true sister involved in this accident and my niece and nephew. the children are fine so far thanks to all of your thoughts and prayers. In fact they aren't even sore and with God's Grace and our steadfast prayer these children will be mentally fine. JESUS is the one who gets all the credit for this amazing recovery. I believe that my sister is face to face with her savior and the family is at peace with this tragedy. We are grieving a great loss however God's Word says in Romans 8;28 that "God works all things together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose". Any assumption can't and will not give the truth to the matter. I now know and feel what it is like to lose a close family member/friend and I will never have the same reaction to another who has experienced what I've experienced in the last 36 hrs. If the driver of the recycle truck is reading this we pray that you are freed from any misery this has caused you.
