Police, demonstrators prepare for topless march

FARMINGTON — Local police say plans are in place to make sure everyone remains safe during a topless march down Main Street on Friday.

A new message appeared Thursday on the Thought Bridge billboard at Joel Batzell's property at Bridge Street and Routes 2 and 4 in West Farmington. The message was put up the day before a topless march organized by a Univerity of Maine at Farmington student in downtown Farmington. The billboard greets travelers heading toward downtown Farmington from Temple and Wilton.

University of Maine at Farmington students Andrea Simoneau and Paige Barker promote Saturday's march in Andrea Simoneau's current Facebook profile picture.

The demonstration is designed to promote equality for women to go topless in public and not be harassed, and to make people aware that it is legal in Maine for both men and women to go bare-chested in public.

The march is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Meetinghouse Park, across from the county courthouse, and to continue down Main Street to Abbott Park, just south of Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Lt. Jack Peck of the Farmington Police Department said Thursday he would have extra police around and some on call as a precaution.

“We want to protect all people involved,” Peck said. “We don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

Counter-demonstrators also plan to be downtown.

Businesspeople who have establishments along the route say it will be business as usual for them.

“We’re actually treating it as a regular, normal day,” said Melissa Judkins, a clerk at Liquid Sunshine. “We were actually just discussing it. We’re just going to wait and see. It’s very interesting for us. We don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Sharon Tranten of Tranten’s Market and Jack Anderson of Trask Jewelers agreed that Friday would be business as usual for them.

Director of Support David Leavitt of the Mt. Blue Regional School District said school buses would avoid the downtown area as much as possible. From what he knows of the schedule, Leavitt said, he expects it to be over before kids are on the buses at about 2 p.m. But as a precaution, buses from the middle and high schools will be going down High Street to Anson Street and then hit Main Street to head toward New Vineyard.

March organizer Andrea Simoneau, 22, of Farmington, said she would speak for about five minutes at Meetinghouse Park and lay some ground rules. She‘ll have electrical tape on hand for those who want to cover their nipples, she said.

“I’m still not sure how many people will show up,” she said, but based on the e-mails, letters and phone calls she’s been receiving, there will be quite few.

“I think it will be something to see. That’s for sure,” Simoneau said. “I just hope it’s a safe and fun day for everyone.”

The number of calls complaining about the protest have decreased at the Town Office, though police have been fielding most of them, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

“We’ve had a couple of calls today,” he said. “Hopefully, this thing will come and go without any unfortunate incidents,” Davis said. He’s not planning to attend, he said.

Well I went and it sucked.

Well I went and it sucked. There was only about 30 marchers and 10 of them were men. They where walking at such a pace if you blinked you would have missed them. And worst of all the only remotely attractive one was wearing a scarf over her nipples. There was more people protesting the march then the marchers.

Equality for both sexes, especially for hairy man boobs!

In another video article a young lady is heard stating "no big deal, I have seen bigger boobs on men".. and I must admit, seeing some 400lb man at the beach with his big hairy man boobs flopping around is just down right digusting... We should pass a "pretty" law, only people with "pretty" boobs get to go around topless.. whetehr men or women! but wait... who gets to decide what defines "pretty"?... seems like we as a society still can not face the fact that as Pilgrims we fled Europe to come here under the disguise that we wanted religous freedom, only wait.. once we got here we set up the same oppressive religious society we said we wanted to get away from.. and it has been that way ever since... if anything displeases those who believe they are "churched" all they need do is just say it's "immoral" and the law HAS to back them... well I say big hairy man boobs are "immoral" and the "churched" should stand up against topless fat men! and to prove it I am going to organize a big hairy man boob march and see just how many of our pius religious churched people show up with blankets to protect society from seeing such immoral hairy man boob images! get real people... 300 or so years of religious tyranny here in the US is not going away anytime soon! All hail the mighty "Church"!! I say way to go to the marchers, but I shudder to think summer is almost here and once again I will be persecuted by big hairy man boobs a Popham Beach! Let Freedom Ring!

gross back boobies

Why coundn't the SJ report this was happening ahead of time so I could have made the trip down to see these boobies..... I am sure there were plenty of back boobies as well. The Portland topless march had plenty of those a couple weeks ago lol It seems it's always the gross ones that feel the need to want to be able to take their ugly cans out. Look at urselves in the mirror. How could you not expect us men to want to come down there and point an laugh? I am only sorry I missed another good laugh this time around.

heartknows...insults are peppered throughout this blog

I admit it is my fault for labeling people as I see them.  A majority of the comments are closed minded and not well thought out.  There comments are mostly based on the “Back in my day” doctrine.  I dub all who don’t just logic, Righteously Ignorant, because in their rush to get their opinion out they fail to use logic.  This bare breasted march is not against the law, she is comfortable in her own skin and as we know times change.  More focus should be on the Shoe Shops leaving for Mexico, lack of good paying jobs and the Paper Mills closing, not a topless college girl.

More focus should be on shoe shops leaving for Mexico

I agree, more focus should be on shoe shops leaving for Mexico! Perhaps these college girls are attempting to get us use to the day when we have to choose between food and clothes because all the good jobs are gone.

What is the march for???

If it is legal for a female to go without a shirt in Maine, then what is this march all about?  I am not getting this...Is she an exibitionist or just really proud of her boobs? Just don't forget to bring your shirt and shoes with you if you plan on shopping or eating out, cause most places require you to be covered, including men.  And I'm sure there will be all kinds of coverage for this story, but enough is enough...Just don't go crying to anyone if a perve follows you and you are raped.  Nothing like advertising!!!

1st, grown people should not have imaginary friends ! 2nd, i love tits. i love women. i see nothing wrong with showing a body part in public that is legal to show. you stupid ass women make comments back and forth about every guy you see without a shirt, be it going in a store, at the beach, or in a construction zone. let us men enjoy looking at a gift.  would you put your baby in a play pen and not give him a rattle to play with? bought time men can see titties and not have to pay a dollar!!!!

I would

I have had a double mastectomy due to cancer. I am a survivor of 4 years! If I were in Maine, I would be there. I think people would be more horrified to see my scarred chest than all of the health, perky ones. They are marching for something that isn't even illegal! March for a cause and make a difference.

Logic...where is YOUR tolerance?

If it is okay for you to freely express your opinion about this, then it should be also okay for others of opposing views to state theirs--without your insulting and degrading adjectives (i.e. closed minded fools, righteously ignorant).

Pandora's picture

enough already! I don't care

enough already! I don't care about this march.  If anyone, male or female, chooses to go toppless I really don't care.  Go for it.  Glad to see people that are comfortable with their bodies.  The human body is not a "nasty" thing we all got one, some are prettier then others.  But it is a natural thing.  If you are not comfortable with your nakedness then don't be naked and leave those who are comfortable alone!

Righteously Ignorant

After reading the redundantly painful articles and posts someone has to set everyone straight. Once all the closed minded fools realize that this would not garner half the attention it does if people used a little tolerance. There are topless beaches all around the world and you (people of western Maine) are the sort that could have a great vacation but complain about that one aspect of a beach. If it is not against the law then why should you care? This march does not hurt anybody and for those would be or are embarrassed, stay home. Until someone comes up with a logical reason why this is so bad, the Righteously Ignorant should stop their complaining.

Everyone has pretty well said

Everyone has pretty well said al I could say!

This is a very immature, childish thing to do, for something that is already 'legal'. Grow up!! Want to be nude, go to a nude beach or nude community. You seem to forget there are 'innocent' children who might be witnessing this circus you are starting..how 'mature' is that..to not think of anyone but yourself??

Surely this immature 22 year

Surely this immature 22 year old student will come to regret this childish behavior. What is she really protesting? What she is doing is not illegal, and she is aware of this; she can protest human nature, but there are certain things that even her childish tantrums cannot change. Unfortunately even though she may not list this activity on her resume, with a simple Google search this will follow her for a long time.

consider this her application

I suppose she can consider this her application to Hooters: they are the only ones that are going to hire her after this stunt.  She is protesting something legal, on a cold day...make a point in the heat of summer (usually a day on or around the middle of August) and get ligitimate. This is a sad appeal for attention. Really, trying to change the nature of those who would already ogle is not going to go well when it is a freak show in the cold anyhow.

marooned's picture

One time?

What is this going to accomplish other than the fact that this stupid show will give her  15 minutes + of showing her lack of intelligence and decency.  If being bare breasted isn't illegal, why doesn't she just pop them boobs out and go for it any time she wishes?  No! She has to make a big deal out of it.  Her mother and father(if she knows who he is) must really be proud of her!
