Bilow Farah sits with her lawyer, Jeffrey Dolley, during her arraignment in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn on Thursday morning.

Bilow A. Farah, 33, of 10 Knox St., Lewiston, was in Androscoggin County Superior Court to answer a charge of driving to endanger and driving without a license.

Farah spoke through an interpreter, Ahmed Isse of Portland, who was appointed by the court. She pleaded not guilty to both charges, her attorney, Jeffrey Dolley, told the judge.

She was released on personal recognizance, but was barred from having any contact with the alleged victim, a 17-year-old student. She also was prohibited from driving without a valid license pending trial.

The student, Kelsey Cope-Norris, suffered broken bones in the accident.

Farah, who was driving a white Mercedes SUV, was parked in front of the school at about 7:30 a.m. dropping off her four sons, according to an affidavit filed by Lewiston police. As she started to leave, her vehicle drove off the roadway and down a paved walking path.

Cope-Norris, who was on the path, was knocked to the ground and Farah's vehicle ran over the girl.

Farah's vehicle kept moving, hitting several parked, unoccupied vehicles — seven in all.

Police interviewed Farah, who said she panicked and lost control of the vehicle. She had been seen with a cell phone in her hand shortly before the accident, the affidavit said.

A search warrant was seeking access to her phone and records of calls and texting history that might support her having been distracted at the time. Police hoped also to search the Mercedes, which was impounded after the accident.

I love the part where it

I love the part where it says, "She was also prohibited from driving without a valid license, pending trial. Holy jumping Judas. Does that mean that when the trial's over, then it'll be o.k. for her to drive without a valid license? I hope her "interpreter" picks up on that. What a freakin' joke.

remember when they first came?

Oh please be patient. Only until they get on their feet.  Remember that speech? How long has it been? None have a clue of their ages yet "ehem" get licences? Or in this case the judge implies they drive without one??? Maybe before they get behind the wheel of a 3500LB weapon they should LEARN how to operate one? They all "own" these stores in Lewiston. Sounds fishy. Somali stores all down lisbon st, all selling the same thing yet go to wal-mart and they're all over the place paying with that ever popuard  welfare card. On hard times is one thing but I cant afford to pay someone to just drive around all day driving "aimlessly" with nothing more to do then take take take. Thats the view I get from my window anyway.

more questions for SJ

With all of the rumors and complaints over the years of the Somali immigrants receiving special treatment and perks, I think the sun-journal could use this case as an example and get some answers on things once an for all.  I am surprised like many others here that this woman lives on Knox Street yet drives a Mercedes SUV?  She doesn't have a drivers license, and the court ACTUALLY ordered her to not drive without a license?  Are you kidding me!!!   There are way too many people on welfare working the system.  That includes all you 'lifelong mainer' welfare losers who somehow feel you deserve it more than others.  WELFARE IS NOT A LIFESTYLE...

You don't know that woman is

You don't know that woman is on welfare.

We actually did work on a story about the number of people on people on disability in Maine not too long ago.  Anecdotally, there was an expectation that rates would be high in Maine and/or the Lewiston area, but we found that is not the case, especially if you consider that we are the state with the oldest workforce.

Somali's a Touchy Subject?

Thanks for the response Patty.  How about addressing the whole somali's getting special treatment complaints we always hear?  I would be very interested to see what all the fuss is about.  In this case specifically, why is this woman driving without a license, who's Mercedes was it if it was not hers, why did the court feel that it needed to tell her not to drive without a license ( I mean really - this one is so ridiculous )?   I also noticed Patty that there were a lot of post removed on this subject.  While I understand offensive comments being removed, it seems like your paper is a little sensitive on the somali issue.  I read some pretty bad comments from the left and right political nuts once in a while...

get tough

Get tough on immigration just like Arizona is trying to do. If she is here legally, she needs to follow the rules like the rest of us.

not guilty?!?

This judicial system is a joke. The only doubt is was she on her phone.  waste taxpayers money for lawyers, interpreters is a joke.

1, LEARN ENGLISH

2, Be responsible for your actions

3, She WAS driving, no doubt about it. unfortunately her fine will be small or waived IF shes prosecuted at all. Maine laws are harder on someone that actually HAS a licence verses someone that has NO driving experience at all.

4, I hope the victims file a civil suit!!!

I wonder...

She was driving a white MERCEDES SUV, who did it belong to?

Your kidding right?

Ok, hmmmm. She lives on Knox St, but was driving a Mercedes with no drivers license. Something is  seriously wrong with this. I think people should have a license to have children  now a days.. You'd think that by driving an SUV at a school, she should have been more cautious about her surroundings, especially knowing there are kids there walking.

Appalling

Is this woman a legal immigrant?  I wish Americans would take control of our country already.  This is disgusting.  Not guilty?  I am sorry were there not a ton of witnesses?  Common Sense ..............RIP

By pleading "Not Guilty", her

By pleading "Not Guilty", her court appointed lawyer will get to bill the taxpayers for more hours than would have been the case with a "Guilty" plea or a " No Contest" plea.  BTW, Ugh is spot on with his comment,  but then, if you read the police accident reports, and not just the ones that make this paper, the answer to his question may very well be yes.
