March organizer Andrea Simoneau, left, is shadowed by Elaine Graham of Farmington during the topless march for gender equity in Farmington on Friday. Graham was trying to hold up a blanket so people could not see Simoneau's breasts.

Before the march, organizer Andrea Simoneau, 22, of Farmington, arrived topless at Meetinghouse Park wearing a short plaid skirt with a cell phone tucked into the waistband. She was swarmed by people, mostly men, with cameras of all sorts as she made her way to the gazebo.

She jumped up onto a half-wall to speak to the crowd. Her skirt blew up, showing a glimpse of her undergarment. Oops, even Marilyn Monroe had that problem, she joked, holding her skirt down with her hand.

“I'm so happy to see so many people here, for or against” she said, adding that the demonstration was about women's rights and equal rights and that it's legal for women in Maine to go topless in public.

More women took their tops off and a few men joined them as they crossed to the sidewalk to begin the march through a crowd of onlookers on the sidewalks, in their vehicles and hanging out windows of downtown apartments.

One woman's bare back bore the words, “Sexuality is what you make it.”

Standing in the park before the march began, Erin Simoneau, 19, of Searsport, the younger sister of Andrea Simoneau, said, “I'm a little nervous. I am ready. I think it's great what we're doing for gender equality.”

The girls' father, Duke Simoneau of Brooks, said he brought sunblock.

“College kids don't think of those things,” he said. “All my daughters were taught to think for themselves and speak out when they think they should.”

“I think she's doing a good thing for women,” said Deborah Stubbs, Duke Simoneau's girlfriend. “I personally don't see any problem with baring a breast in public. It think it's the culture we created.”

Others seemed to be there for a different reason.

“We came all the way from Waterville,” Anthony Grenier of Vassalboro said. “I want to take some pictures. I just want to see what's going on. I talked to my wife about it; she didn't have a problem.”

Some men had two cameras hung from their necks and a cell phone camera in their hands.

Frenchie Colt of Farmington, who sat with his wife on another bench, said he was there to watch.

“They have nudist camps in Florida. My wife and I are both nudists,” Colt said. “It's about equal rights. You don't look at a woman's ass. You look at their face. You may glance down at first but once you've seen them, it's done.”

Tiffany Kennison, 21, of Farmington sat in the sun doing homework.

“Personally, I don't want to see it,” Kennison said. “I think that personally their point is not going to change the way people think. It's our values.”

Heather Grover, 22, of Gardiner stood next to her father, Dave Grover.

“I think it's good. I think it's fun. I think people are way too uptight,” Heather Grover said. She and her father drove up to support the women but she wasn't participating.

“People need to relax," Dave Grover said. "I don't think this is harming anything. In Europe it's accepted. God put beautiful women on this Earth to enjoy.”

Angela Sweenhart, 39, of Farmington, walked around topless, a pink feather boa around her neck.

“I think it's a great cause," Sweenhart said. "That's why I am here.”

Some days are better than others, C.W. Ames said, as he admired the sights.

“I've never saw anything like it in my life,” Ames said. “I hope I see it again. It's just flesh.”

“I'm proud of what they're doing,” Candace Minkowsky, 18, of Monmouth said. “I could never do anything like this. It's so courageous. I support equality, and this will make history.”

Elaine Graham, a Christian conservative, walked the route beside Andrea Simoneau with a large blue blanket spread at arms' length, trying to shield Simoneau's breasts from the public.

Traffic was backed up through downtown for miles but police said there were no incidents.

Simoneau walked across the bridge to Abbott Park to stand on a hill above the crowd. She thanked everyone for coming as Graham still tried to shield her with the blanket.

“I am so glad it went down peacefully and safely for everyone,” Simoneau said.

Vietnam veteran Charles Bennett of Farmington, the District 4 commander of the American Legion, passed out American flags from the back of his pickup on Main Street.

“I thought it was ridiculous," he said. "I would rather see a half-dozen or dozen young ladies walking down the sidewalk with skimpy bikinis on than naked, to let my imagination run wild. When they're naked, there goes my imagination."

Like your body? Show it!

To me, being nude is being the same person but in a sensually charged ambience that is very pleasurable. Indeed I prefer being with with my family and other sociable mixed gender naturists in clubs and resorts for all of our recreation or relaxation. My personal best was three weeks vacation at Euronat resort in France, with everything except sandals put away for the entire duration.  The strangenes of shirt and shorts to depart there was almost as strange as becoming a naturist many years before. As regards sex-life; being nude together promotes an appreciation of the pleasure that can be given one to another. Enjoy our clothing free lifestyle!  (naturistspace.org)

Scary, armymom!!  Sex

Scary, armymom!!  Sex offenders roaming around in the neighborhood!!  But tell me, how does that correlate with the article of the topless march?

Don't Feel Sorry For Me

Wake up People. There are two or is it three big time repeat sex offenders that made the front page of SJ this past week alone for current events. Do we go a day without a sex offender notification? These guys do not get this put in the paper because they are nice guys folks! They rape, sodomized in some way sexually assaulted a mad, woman or child, most of them more than one and more than one act. My neighborhood has been host to a peeping tom for the past seven months that we know of. A few weeks our very big dog. In the middle of the night he dog went nuts, barking at my daughters partially open window bedroom window, it was one of those warm nights. In the morning when we took the dog out, we found a condom under my daughters window. Before anyone gets the idea it was her boyfriend, she is 20, he was at work since he works the night shift and he has a key to the front door and is welcome. We and our neighbors who he also "visits"have been reporting this situation to local police for 7 months with zero response. I am convinced the peeper was putting on that condom with the intent of entering my home and scared off by the dog. So do not feel sorry for me, I will feel sorry for you when I read you have become another victim, another statistic.

I guess it shouldn't be a big

I guess it shouldn't be a big deal.  In Europe, topless isn't a big deal.  The Riveria is known for their topless beaches.  And of course, nudes have always been a work of art.

If she is so damn proud of

If she is so damn proud of her boobies, why the blanket?  She preaches to let it all hang out and then is ticked when people look.  Get a life Andrea, we're tired of the BS this week.  Honestly.  Go worry about an oil spill, THATS news.

Get over it!!!!

Isn't it nice to live in a country and a state that allows a person to express themselves as they choose?? When we are born we are nude so what is all the fuss about? I choose not to do this but you do and that is alright.  FREEDOM OF CHOICE IS GREAT!

Don3's picture

ok, if women topless is legal...

Why do strip clubs need special licences? Their genitils are "thonged". Another way for the State to make an extra buck by buying permits? Am I wrong in believing the govenment spends THOUSANDS of dollars to make a dollar? These people are running this state into the ground. I remember years ago an establishment I think in Portland made the waitress's wear paint or pasties.

Topless

Who are all the people that are ashamed of their own bodies that they try to dictate to others on how they should express themselves?? Who are the people that they feel they are to judge others?? Could someone PLZ tell me one crime that was committed because someone saw a Boob?? To all those who are ashamed of their own body,,,Guess what,, You were born without a shirt and as tough as it may seem, You  had no pants on either....What makes one think that they know what is best for everyone??  Just what does it hurt??If everyone went naked after ten minutes, who would care??Why is the human body shunned??And finally What effect does it have on children?(Facts not opinions Please) Most children suckled as a child anyways..Heavens the same people should keep their children in a dark room, so that they don't look out in a pasture and see a cow without a shirt on.. Or a stallion!!

Disappointed That So Many Mainers Just Don't Get It

I am so dissapointed that so many Mainers just don't get it! As a woman I can not walk freely and safely through the community even in a business suit. I must every minute be aware of my surroundings and on guard. I walk around with my keys laced through my fingers to be used as a weapon to defend my self as well as for quick access to my car which I check firs to make sure no one is hiding in before I get in. As soon as I get in my car, before even start the engine, I lock all the doors. In addition to keeping the keys through my fingers, I keep a heavy flashlight and other weighty objects attached to my key chain that I can swing and hit an attacker with. I also always carry a can of aeresol hairspray in my pocket with the cover off and pointed so I can pull it out and shoot into the face of an attacker. I use hsirspray becase it will stop the attack of a person or animal without causing permanent damage or have the high risk of trigger life threatening resperatory distress mace/pepper sprays do. Someplaces I even carry it in my hand since statistics show they are so unsafe for women all the time such as parking lots and parking garages and entry areas to homes and apartments. I always am espescially on the alert on arriving home to a seemingly empty house carrying my protection with me and doing a walk theough before I settle in or let my guard down at all. As a woman I have taken self-defense courses. I have practice both in class and in my mind what I would do in various situations. ahow many of you men live this way? It is the norm for woman. This even was about "take back the night." It was about the fact that it should not matter what a woman is or is not wearing, she should be safe and unmolested. Women should not have to walk down Maine St with keys laced through the fingers of one hand and mace or hair spray in anothe anymore than a grandchild should be afraid to sit in Daddy's or Grandpa's lap, but we are now having to teach them to be afraid anymore than women should have to be constantly on guard at best and frequently in fear. This march was not about giving men a thrill because women could bare their chests on Main Street, it was aobout the fact a woman should be safe doing so when in fact, today she isnt safe walking down Main Street in a business suit. I hope people, men in particular will give some thought to this march and its true meaning and what women feel every day and think about their mothers, wives and daughtersbecause that is who we are talking about here living ing fear and having violent crimes commmitted against because we are women.

What part of Maine are you

What part of Maine are you from?  I agree that women should be aware of their surroundings and be prepared to protect themselves if necessary, but the first part of self defense is to not put yourself in a situtaion that is dangerous. I lived in Boston for 10 years and never felt unsafe. It sounds like you're obsessed and overly prepared, and on heightened alert all the time, playing out what you would do to counter act an attack, that you're missing out on relaxing and enjoying life itself.

Don3's picture

can you say paranoia

You make it seem like we live in the bronx. Unless you made alot of enemies in your life I think you went off the deep end.

Maine is not like it was 30 years ago I'll give you that but its not quite that bad. Not to be rude or incensitive but maybe you should seek professional help.

What a bunch of boobs!

If this amount of time and energy had been spent on the environment, the economy, medical research funding - anything - it might have been worth it.

What a joke

What a farce it truly is sad that these "women" feel this is the only way to get attention because I can't for the life of me see what other purpose or relevance the march had when it was not illegal to begin with.....but then again it probably will be soon now that they put on this freak show.

nudity

If we all went nude, they would laugh at some men.  Really though, if we all went nude then we might be forced to shape up our bodies more as we might be embarrassed by how fat or ugly the stuff is that we hide under all those layers of clothing.  However, We do not advocate going outside nude in the Maine winters.  We would hate to freeze anything vital, or not so vital depending on our age.  Reason laughs at all the fuss over nudity... We are all born naked, and although it may be hard for some to believe we are all born White too.  It is only after birth that the skin pigment really begins to change.  Truly we are one race of men and women on this world.  Reason thinks you should believe this for it is true.
