LEWISTON — A Winthrop couple was arrested Friday for leaving their baby daughter in a pickup truck on Lisbon Street while they browsed a nearby head shop, police said.
A Maine State Police trooper arrested Lyndsey Hall, 18, and Scott Babineau, 20, when they returned to the truck roughly a half-hour after the officer arrived. They were charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said the 4-month-old had been left inside the pickup with the doors unlocked and a dog barking next to her.
Trooper Robert Burke was on his way to Central Maine Community College when he was flagged down by several people who pointed him to the pickup truck.
“There was a very small infant in the back seat with what looked like a pit bull cross hovering over her,” Burke said. “When I opened the door, the dog started going crazy on me. We were very concerned about the child.”
A Lewiston police officer went to the scene to assist. The officers called for Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout who came from Greene. Strout arrived, but there was still no sign of the couple.
“Obviously, it’s dangerous to leave a child alone anywhere,” Burke said. “You never know what could happen.”
The truck was left in front of the district courthouse on one of the busiest sections of Lisbon Street.
After Strout arrived and began working to remove the dog from the truck, Hall returned to the truck.
“She seemed bewildered that I was even upset about this,” Trooper Burke said. “She didn’t understand why this was a big deal.”
Babineau came along a few minutes later. The couple said they had been shopping at a nearby store that sells incense, pipes and assorted paraphernalia.
Burke arrested Hall and Babineau and called for help from the Department of Health and Human Services. An agent was there within minutes and decided to take the child into custody.
Hall and Babineau remained at the Androscoggin County Jail on Friday night. Burke said the couple remained indignant as they were taken to jail, insisting that they were good parents.
“It’s disturbing that they left the child alone to fend for herself,” Burke said. “You’ve got to be a good parent 100 percent of the time.”

Parenting classes
I don't beleive they get nothing in taxpayer assistance. Being that young, not even having enough liquidity to purchase a vehicle. If they don't see the problem with thier actions clearly this is a case of ignorance. Therefore they really should seek out some parenting classes et cetera. It is a shame Maine and other states don't institute drug testing for benefits. I guess the children would pay that price anyhow.

I am assuming most of you who are commenting this are adults, who feel like you know everything about children and parenting and how kids should be raising. YES what lyndsey did was wrong, extremely wrong, I would never condone her actions. But you people commenting on this are pathetic. Don't you have lives? Obviously what your saying will not have an impact on what will happen to the baby, that is for DHS to decide. None of you judgemental peices of trash are perfect either, so why don't you all get a little more concerned about your own lives, and not the life of an obviously confused teenage mom who needs guidence, not judgment during this difficult time in her life. So back off, and let the punishment she is going to receive from the law be sufficent enough, your opionions are unneccessary.

Yes I agree that what the parents to the 4 month old did was VERY wrong. and I know the mother and she should have known better, but hey we all make mistakes okay... You guys sittin here talking about it and saying a bunch of crap about the parents being bad and not good parents are waisting your time, its not like you guys can take it into your hands and its not like its your life to worry about...... Once again yes leaving a 4 month old alone in a car for over 30 mins is wrong but theres nothing you guys can do about it the law enforcers are doing their jobs and taking care of this.. Just drop it and stop talkin shit on here about it because you guys arnt doing anything.... Thank you

Rather than all of you arguing with each other maybe you need to consider that there was a 4 month old baby left unattended for almost 30 minutes in a car with a dog. WOW......it doesnt take a whole lot of brains to figure out that this is just soomething that you dont ever do. Stop trying to make excuses for these people and maybe teach then how to take care of someone other than themselves. A head shop REALLY.

No, I never HAVE left my child inside a vehicle alone.... I'm sorry you feel the need to assume that I have. I agree with you totally--ANY amount of time is wrong. Too much can go wrong! I'm NOT judging your family/friends or whomever they are to you. Yes, they made the news. Hopefully they will NOT make the news again and hopefully OTHERS can learn from their mistake --IF they happen to be doing similar things. I was merely wanting to point out what could have happened as well as the potential unseen damage to a baby left unattended. Why? Two reasons. Because I've seen it happen personally and because I have degrees in the social service field so I'm just trying to use what I've learned to help someone else along the way because IF they want the help, it's out there!

I think its funny that all her sister and parents can do is make excuses for it, just accept the fact that it was a extremely stupid thing to do, and it wasnt a mistake. I know who she is and I know some of the things she does, and this isnt the worst of it. She's at my neighbors house buying "things" all the time, and leaves her child in the car. And as for smoking, that isnt the worst of her habits either. Kelly, that picture does make her look like a monster, I agree. :) I think for them to get their child back they should need to take alot of parenting classes and prove they are responsible enough for the HUGE resposibility of being a parent.

We are not making excuses for her actions and only have hear say about her habits. I agree with the fact that she needs to get her priorities in check and go through extensive parenting classes. There is nothing more important then our children! If you had read all comments you would have seen that I agree it was an unexcusable act and there are no excuses for their actions. I know she was taught moral and values and not sure what she was thinking, now my granddaughter is a victim of the couples circumstances!

Sorry Sista, but no. I was a single 18 year old mother. I NEVER endangered my child. When I got pregnant I had to leave childhood behind. Your sister is responsible for everything for that child and there is no way she didn't think what she did was stupid unless she was stoned out of her mind. No one thinks it's okay to leave a baby alone in a car, or that it's legal. Anyone using that excuse needs to get real, 20 years ago when my son was born everyone knew not do do such a thing and they are even more aware of it now. There is no excuse for this behavior and it only shows the obvious carelessness these parents have. No one that I know that read this story today had one single ounce of sympathy for them. Again, no excuse at all. They are screw ups and don't deserve to have a kid. I don't know them, and don't have to, I see their kind every single day and all I can think when I see them is "God, someone needs to take that poor kid away before they screw it up permanantly.".

It seems like you DO see she made a mistake but, not knowing you or your family, I have no idea if you realize the level of seriousness in that mistake and the potential for severe damage or death to your niece. For instance, even IF no one touched the baby, no one tried to kidnap her, no cars hit the vehicle the baby was in, the dog did no harm to the baby, the temperature inside the car did not escalate or get too cold there are a LOT of what if's.. What if for instance, the baby had spit up or started coughing and choked to death? What if she had had a seizure of some sort? What if, some fluke caused the car to overheat and catch on fire? What if a stray ball had hit the window and caused glass to shatter on the baby?
Babies and children go thru a series of developmental stages. At your niece's age, she is learning whether or not she can trust she will be responded to and cared for if she is wet, hungry, thirsty, tired, needing to be held or soothed. The way she views the world in the future is dependent upon whether mommy, daddy or other RESPONSIBLE caregiver meets those needs consistently and lovingly. The fact remains they made a HUGELY irresponsible decision that likely will have or could have had far reaching consequences.
It is up to us as adults to take the past--what we went through, what was done to us etc, and learn from that rather than repeat some of those same mistakes. There is plenty of help out there...including Advocates for Children, Tri County Mental Health, private therapists, the baby's pediatrician, your sister's doctor, etc. PLEASE encourage her to get some help!! Your parents may have been drunks, druggies or whatever, but YOU TWO don't HAVE to go down that same road. You can CHOOSE to do better and in this case, unfortunately your sister didn't! I hope she learns from this hard lesson without further risk to that precious baby. I love my sister dearly just as you love yours but if she had done that to my niece and nephew, I have to tell you there WOULD be consequences for that behavior even if I had to turn her in myself! My first priority is ALWAYS the helpless child!

And to eeyoresfriend, I bet you never left your child in a vehicle! MMM...like when you stopped to get something from moms house, got ready to leave for work running late and forgot something important, child was sleeping after running errands so you brought the groceries inside...my point is, no matter whether it's for a few minutes or 30 minutes it still is wrong. I'm sure many parents are guilty for doing the same thing. The difference between most and this young couple is they made the news!

The photo used makes the 18 year old look like a monster, but I want people to know that she feels remorseful and she cried endlessly. People need to know more about other people before passing judgement! It's ok to express concern and share your thoughts, but somethings written are just uncalled for. I know she now realizes how dangerous and unsafe is was for the baby. Everyone parent has made mistakes. For instance, When we bath our kids how many people have turned their back for a second, how many have had kids fall downstairs, how many have had them cut their hair....you get my point! just because she knows where to shop, and will give you a ride in a snowstorm, and will give you a cigg. when your out does make her a good person. leaving her kid with a pitbull in an unlocked car on a busy city street while shopping for over 30 min. in a headshop makes her a bad parent for now. as for her life and what she's been through: we all go through things, and most of us leave that behind and shelter it from our children. its called growing up. those who had bad parents know what it was like, and have the option of leaving it behind and being a different parent. also watch your language, this isn't a dance club and no one is intimidated by your foul mouth. try to keep it civil.

so we are clear on that because your response was about parenting a toddler, and the act was about an infant human, the weakest and most vulnerable and most defensless of our community. as for redemption, rehab and parenting classes would probubly not be enough, but mabey after the kid is old enough to care for herself, they can have her back. if they can't handle an infant that just sits there, what WILL happen with a toddler?

it wasn't 10 min. it was over 30 min from the time the cop stopped, how long before that unknown. keeping eye contact? they were both inside a building with covered windows browsing. it only takes a moment for a baby to startle a dog and have it attack, or a car to crash. i'm a first time mom too, and i have made mistakes, but never intentially for the sake of convience in order to shop. get a sitter or stay home or take baby/child with you, thats your life as a responsible mother. this isn't entirely (though mostly) a learn on the job thing, and some forethought is required.

But you can not blame your parents for this and the upbringing that you have had. It makes your mom sick for what choices her girls have made so please remember family always comes first and and at a time like this you all should be banning together to help each other NOT putting your parents down. I know that it is hard to be a good parent when you have not had any good parenting yourself. I have struggled with that all my life.
But maybe your sister and you can break the cycle. Perhaps your sister will get some support and if she is willing, some education about parenting. The state has more than enough children in foster care. They would rather that a child live with her parents, if it is safe. They will do as much as they can to help to bring your sister and her husband to the point where they understand why what they did was so foolish. The key is for her to take responsibility for her actions, not in the sense of being blamed or shamed, but in the sense of realizing that when you are a parent, the buck stops with you...you alone are responsible for your child's welfare. I will pray that she can look back on this as a turning point that led to a good end.

my sister was a first time mom at 18 too, and we didn't exactly have a plush upbringing with little parenting also, but she was smart enough to never leave her children (twins with no father present) unattended. will her next mistake kill? will that be your parent's fault too? when does personal responsiblity kick in? it takes more then feeding and changing diapers and dressing her cute to make a real "MOTHER". justice for you as children? you are adults now, ACT LIKE IT!

The fact that a Staffordshire terrier was present in the Vehicle should have no baring what so ever on this story. The breed in itself is not dangerous, It's how they are raised. Just like any animal in this country or Child for that matter they learn what they are taught. Makes me wonder how these individuals were raised to go and leave their child unattended in the vehicle. These 2 people, I will not call parents, are probably out of jail by now and working to get the baby back. They probably will succeed. Why? Burke said it's "disturbing" that they left the baby alone. It's "horrible" !! AND I would believe against the law to leave your baby with a pit bull while you go for "paraphernalia." Although after they used the "paraphernalia" the pit bull may have been better fit to care for the baby.

It sounds to me that the dog was protecting the child. While it probably isn't a good idea, it was a common thing to do years ago. Perhaps this couple didn't know it is now illegal to leave a child in the car while running into a store to shop. More should be done to make the public aware of the law.

The dog is a pit bull. What if it decided, for reasons known only to it, to deface the baby. Would that have been o.k.? I wouldn't trust a pit bull with my tank.

Probably not a good idea? They were gone at least half an hour. The truck could have been hit by another car. The dog might have hurt the baby. Some one with a steak could have lured the dog away to steal the little tike. The baby could have vomited and choked.etc. etc. Good parenting and common sense is what's involved here law or no law.

You never leave a child anywhere. These two scumbags should be punished to the extent of the law but will never happen with Maine's judicial system.
