Maine police rescue baby after standoff

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police say a Portland, Maine, woman is facing bank robbery and other charges following a six-hour standoff that ended after she turned her 5-month-old son over to an officer.

Thirty-four-year-old Jill Polley of Portland was arrested Sunday afternoon. She was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.

The baby was turned over to relatives.

Police say Polley is a suspect in the Saturday morning robbery of a Norway Savings Bank branch in Portland.

Police chief James Craig tells the Portland Press Herald the standoff was "a pretty significant situation."

Police say Polley threatened to harm herself, but not the baby.

Polley surrendered shortly after Officer Eric Nevins carried the baby away from the building where Polley was living.
