New parking area built for rec field access

The Livermore Falls public works crew has built a parking area next to the Tri-town Skate Park off the Foundry Road for those wishing to access the town's Recreation Field from a level area instead of climbing down to the field from the road.

Public Works Foreman Bill Nichols designed the lot to try to address concerns about parking and handicap accessibility issues to the playing fields after the new bike-walk path was installed, Town Manager Jim Chaousis said.

The town crew did the work.

Chadwick suggested signs be put on Foundry Road to direct people to where the parking is.

Work is continuing on enhancing the recreation area and other areas in town, Chaousis said. The crew and Chaousis want to see how the new gravel parking area packs down.

A Facade Committee that worked on oversight of a $150,000 Community Development Block Grant has agreed to turn over any leftover funds from that grant to the town, Chaousis said Wednesday. Otherwise it would have to be returned to the grant program.

Businesses had to apply for the match-grant money, up to $25,000 each, and match each grant $1 with $1 from the businesses. The initiative was to improve business facades in the downtown area.

It is estimated after all grant-associated work is done that there will be $13,000 to $15,000 left, Chaousis said.

Some of the money will go toward more picnic tables, trash receptacles and benches at the recreation field area and other town properties where those items would be a benefit to the public.

Resident Richard Korhonen asked Monday if handicap-accessible parking will still be available off Foundry Road so that someone can sit and watch a game or go down to the field. There was an area that led to the field prior to the new pathway being installed.

Chaousis said at this time there is the parking lot below with a handicap spot and there is still one above.

“We have limited funds,” he said. This was a short-term fix, Chaousis said, and they will work on a long-term plan for the area.

Korhonen said he would be contacting the state to make sure there is compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

His late wife used the former pathway down to the recreation field for several years before she died, Korhonen said.

Waste of Money

This town sure knows how to waste money. They put in a walking path beside the road. This looks like a paving accident where they missed trying to pave half of the road. A path around the grassy area of the field would have served better purpose. Then you would be able to watch your children play in the center area and be able to see them at all times.
It would have been better to see the picnic tables come back, or maybe a garbage can or two. Dug outs for the little baseball players that cook out in the sun. Maybe another porta-potty closer to the parking area. Then there are the cracks in the basketball court that you could trip over.

The money the town wasted on the poorly planned walking path could have been used to make a very nice parking area on the end of the rec field. This area is currently used to grow poison sumac, black flies and a catchall for McDonald's bags blowing in the wind. Again....it would have been a place you could see your kids from. Do the people that designed this mess even have kids?
Please......don't write any more articles on this subject. It is hard enough to see this misuse of funds. It is harder to see it's praise in a public forum.

I went to the field for the

I went to the field for the first time since the 'path' was put in...I had no clue the lose rocks were part of the 'path' at the entrance..my nephew said to me 'Auntie you're driving on the bike path'.....it needs to be much more defined..you cannot tell it is not part of the road!! There was no place to park at the road level...hard to watch a game being played on the field, from the lower new parking lot. Some seniors, and handicaped people, enjoy watching the games from their cars...this 'new improved' design has some serious flaws...It is a nice field, and very well kept, but the new path leaves a lot to be desired.
