Auburn sets brush collection for June, creates coupon program for bulky waste

AUBURN — Spring cleanup will be back in June, with city trucks collecting brush curbside for residents that register for the service.

Those interested in having brush and branches collected need to call the city Public Works Department at 333-6670 by May 28. Public Works Director Bob Belz said the city will begin collecting brush at those residences after June 7.

It's a good solution that should save the city money, City Manager Glenn Aho said Monday. Councilors agreed, voting 6-0 to approve the collections.

Councilors decided in April to end this year's free curbside collection of bulky waste, old appliances and furniture. But councilors asked Aho to investigate offering a collection to people willing to pay for the service.

After considering letting residents pay to have the city cart off bulky items, Aho said he's settled on the brush collection program. Residents would be able to register with the city to have brush collected, free of charge.

The city will also sell tickets for residents wanting to take bulky items, old furniture and appliances to the Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. on Goldthwaite Road. Residents can buy those tickets at the Public Works office on Gracelawn Road or in the City Clerk's Office in the Auburn City Building.

Each ticket will cost $20, enough to cover the city's costs, Aho said.

Councilors also voted to change the city's curbside recycling collections, going to a twice-monthly schedule beginning July 6.

The city will continue to collect and sort recycling at the curb, but collections would be reduced to two times per month. If a month has five weeks, there will be no collections on the fifth week.

Community

I haven't been a part of the budgeting process, but I would love to have all my recycling and trash hauled, roads and sidewalks plowed within moments of the snow falling, my kids' teachers paid a salary they deserve for the important job they do, more police on the job to keep us safe, public concerts and festivals free of charge... and to not pay taxes. But that isn't realistic. Being a part of a community means we need to share in the responsibility. This seems like a workable compromise.

weird

It's weird how so many people don't want to take care of their own TRASH. Other towns have the citizens be responsible for their own, and you guys whine. Free brush cleanup? cool! As far as spring clean up, how spoiled have you folks become? You hauled the junk TO your house, why do others have to pay for you to haul it AWAY? Some people would bitch if you hung 'em with a brand new rope!

unreal.....

we all scream "don't raise my taxes" then complain when the city cuts services. That's the trade off folks-

BTW

The whole budget fiasco is a joke...Aho appears to have the council by the shorthairs with his double speak.

They seem intimidated by him...

Does that make sense????

So someone loads a pickup, spends gas $$, goes through the hassle of getting a "ticket" during business hours, and  PAYS $20 to get rid of bulky waste. BUT, the city will drive around picking up brush for nothing.

Why not charge for picking up the brush as well? $15 bucks to cover gas and contribute to the manpower would be a bargain.

In the beginning of this

In the beginning of this spring clean up fiasco, Aho's biggest concern was out of towners taking any potentially valuable trash/junk before the city of Auburn can cash in on it. How ironic that Aho got his way in the end. Aho is all for the brush pick for" Free", because the city will grind that brush up for mulch.  The Auburn homeowners get the shaft again. How long has Aho paid taxes on his auburn home? People that have paid taxes on their homes for 50+ years lost their spring clean up. I would like to see a list of city vehicles except Police vehicles. How many city officials get the use of a city vehicle, and who those city officials are. The taxpayers have the right to know, so I urge Belinda Gerry to adress this issue at the city council meeting.  The city can swap in those huge v8 impala's for Ford Focus', like CMP, and others have done with their car fleets. Aho gets 100+ grand a year, a city vehicle, gas, free sandwiches at council meetings. It' great to be mr Aho !!! homeowners in Auburn.......not so great.   We want our spring clean up back. I urge all city councilors to poll their constituents, and not mr Aho on this issue.
