Keep the pressure on FairPoint

FairPoint Communications has trouble. The company has assumed a tremendous amount of debt, undertaken the largest telecommunications system transition in the U.S., and has been battered by the recession. Still, this doesn't exempt the company from meeting its obligations.

The company must be held accountable for its errors and missteps, like
what occurred before the Maine Public Utilities Commission last week,
when the panel declined to waive $845,000 in penalties for recurring
service problems. The company's performance so far hasn't earned it
leniency.

Northern New England states must continue to pressure FairPoint to perform and
fulfill its promises of service, broadband Internet expansion and
competitive prices for consumers.

That's easier said than done, nowadays. Over the past 18 months, banks and automakers have teetered under the weight of their debts, only to be stabilized by government dollars. And these were largely unregulated industries, far freer to maneuver in the markets than any public utility.

Government oversight of utilities is natural, which could lead to the natural reaction of government trying to direct management of a utility that's faltering — like FairPoint. This is understandable; the government's ultimate responsibility is to the customer, and if the utility falls apart, the customers would go unserved.

Yet FairPoint doesn't need more help repairing its service in Northern New England. The company needs to fix what's broken, and fast; not be slowed by bureaucratic demands, such as hiring an independent consultant to check its work, which is the recommendation of the Maine public advocate. A second opinion, though, doesn't seem necessary.

The diagnosis and prognosis for FairPoint is apparent. It knows better than anyone what is and isn't working with its systems in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. What FairPoint needs are swift, improving results, not further appraisals of its myriad challenges.

The state, or its regulatory agencies, or its lawmakers (hearings on FairPoint convene in Augusta before the Legislature's Utilities Committee on Aug. 12) must resist trying to micro-manage FairPoint. This won't help the company. And, the public has likely had its fill of government intervention into struggling corporations.

State regulators and lawmakers are acting right in taking hard-line stances on FairPoint's performance. Accountability for public utilities is crucial; their overseers must do everything possible to ensure utilities fulfill their public responsibility. Keep the pressure on them.

But remember: The only entity that can really fix FairPoint right now is FairPoint.

I canceled Fair Point in May

I canceled Fair Point in May and went to Vonage. I also had Fair Point DSH until June when I went to Time Warner Road Runner. As of last month when I received a bill from Fair Point for August I called and was told my cancelation orders had not been processed yet...As far as I'm concerned Fair Point can keep billing me till THE COWS COME HOME....They'll never see any money from me.....

During the few short months

During the few short months that I had Fairpoint I had numerous phonecalls for the previous owner of the home Im in, who had no landline phone connected as he had snipped the lines under the house yrs before...The callers I believe were telemarketers and got my number by using owners address last known which was us....Another and one of the first incidents was a phone call to my house at 2 30 am from sheriffs dept. saying that a 911 call had been made and was shown to be from my phone number...They swear it happened and I was sleeping and very disturbed this happened...Fairpoint also says the call had to have been made from me...Insulted, confused and fed up with the company I finally made a switch...With this company I have no more calls for previous owners and of course no false 911 calls have been made...Also the monies saved has made it easier to open the bill each month as fairpoint charges were from 90 to 400 a mo...and these are local calls that Fairpoint charges as long distant numbers. After only a few months I was so fed up when absolutely noone at Fairpoint would help in my situation and soon was hearing news reports about how even the 911 system was messed up because of them and people had to go without emergency help... For them to be bankrupt at this point is a fine example of companies not knowing how to run the businesses they took over...

FAIRPOINT STILL HASNT

FAIRPOINT STILL HASNT REMEDIED THE PROBLEM!! Angel you are the exceptoin to the rule not the standard... My wife and I have been trying to recieve internet service from Fairpoint for about a month now. In the begining we were told 5 to 7 days till we recieved our modem to install ourselves. After 9 days we called to inquire what the hold up was and they basically told us the order wasnt processed and they couldnt tell us why. Also they could not cancel the current order becouse they cannot comunicate with the technicians. (what kind of system doesnt let the them talk to techs) After 5 phone calls and speaking with 2 supervisors we were told there is nothing they can do for us and they cannot give us a time frame for when we can recieve service so hurry up and wait or we would be better off using a different service provider. If they cannot simply mail a package and answer the customer when it doesnt show up with something other than go somewhere else then they dont belong doing buisiness in our state. I understand there isnt another company lining up to take over the infrastructure or the debt. But if they cannot provide the service within reasonable limits then internally heads need to roll and jobs need to become available. The rest of theyre branches in other states dont appear to be having a problem. And by all means they cannot be allowed to collect on service not provided and stop the bait and switch game they play in the rural areas like Lainie9 has seen happen.

Not sure why when you call

Not sure why when you call them to honor their promotions, and you are told you are a "Fairpoint Classic" customer and suddenly a $10 promotion is $70. Basic phone and internet service from Fairpoint in Greene is no less than $70/mo.

I have heard nothing but bad

I have heard nothing but bad things from Fairpoint customers, however, when i recently called them about my internet and phone bill, i got right through to a real person...who spoke English to my delight!...they were very polite and very helpful. My problem was resolved in about 10 minutes and I will now save about $10.00 a month on my bill!
