The real story shows high taxes not nearly enough

USA Today created a stir last week with a headline that raised eyebrows across the blogosphere: "Tax bills in 2009 at lowest level since 1950," the paper trumpeted.

"Amid complaints about high taxes and calls for smaller government, Americans paid their lowest level of taxes last year since Harry Truman's presidency," the paper reported.

"Federal, state and local taxes — including income, property, sales and other taxes — consumed 9.2 percent of all personal income in 2009, the lowest rate since 1950, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports."

That was "far below" the historic average of 12 percent for the last half-century, according to USA today.

"The idea that taxes are high right now is pretty much nuts," said an economist at a liberal think tank, a quote which probably drew a "nuts-to-you" response from millions of working Americans.

While it would be nice to think we are all paying less tax to our federal government, the reality is quite different.

In 2010, about half of all Americans — 47 percent — will pay no federal income tax at all. Their incomes were below certain thresholds which gave them enough credits, deductions and exemptions to eliminate their tax obligations.

Those credits have grown to the point that a family of four making as much as $50,000 per year will owe no federal income tax for 2009, according to the Tax Policy Center, a conservative think tank.

So, when the people who pay no federal income tax are combined with the people who do, the "average rate" touted by USA Today quickly slips.

But that's only half of the true picture.

All working Americans, whether they pay federal income tax or not — are subject to payroll taxes, and those rates would probably wipe the jaunty smile off old Harry Truman's face. Those taxes include Social Security, Medicare and unemployment compensation.

For most workers, these payroll deductions now exceed their federal income tax obligation.

In 1937, the Social Security tax rate was 2 percent of all wages. By 1966 it had grown to 7.7 percent.

That year, Medicare was introduced with a .7 percent tax.

Today, the Social Security tax is 12.4 percent (half paid by the employee and half by the employer) and the Medicare tax is 2.9 percent on the first $106,800 earned.

Now, here's the truly eye-opening part — it's not nearly enough.

The federal government will run a $1.6 trillion deficit this year. Social Security expenditures will exceed collections for the first time in 2010, and Medicare already relies on general fund support.

So, the actual situation is not only different than the rosy report from USA Today, it would be far worse if we were actually paying for our current levels of spending.

And that, when you think about it, is truly "nuts."

well someone working with

well someone working with that experience will have learned how to manage thier money, worked in a real time frame, and most everyone pumps thier own gas today so i guess that part of the experience is true, however with those qualities I dont think I could do worse and many of these paper pushers dont even have the above traits such as they cant live within the means of the taxpayer dollars they prefer to take kickbacks from others to create works of art on our roadway like Russell St. and to Veritatas every figure is real and every tax stated is real tell me what tax I stated is not real that way we can see the real idiot eh.

A perfect example of the fail that is the SJ

Instead of actually dealing with the facts presented in the USA today article, the SJ farts out this nonsense: "Those credits have grown to the point that a family of four making as much as $50,000 per year will owe no federal income tax for 2009, according to the Tax Policy Center, a conservative think tank."

A conservative think tank? Conservative think tanks are the ones spreading lies about being taxed to death and the USA today article clearly shows that is a pile of crap, but the SJ prints it as if it is a meaningful rebuttal?

Hey Rex - want to know why the Sun Journal is getting knocked around for stupidity? This editorial is the perfect example why. You had what, six or so people around a table, and this is the crap you came up with. Pathetic.

Now that's a good idea. Let's

Now that's a good idea. Let's limit city employees to $70k/yr., I'm sure we'd have the smartest, most productive, resourceful bunch of employees in the state! Maybe Fixit will apply, I can see his resume now - McDonald's 2001 to 2003, Walmart 2003 to 2005, pumping gas 2005 to 2009, and then Lewiston City Manager 2009 to forever! Hey, that kind of sounds like Kai Leigh Tara's resume only in reverse!

Idiot. If you want intelligent, qualified people doing these IMPORTANT jobs, they need to be compensated accordingly with real-world wages, not economics 101 from Fixit's fantasy world.

We are headed hard and fast for socialism, and it's amazing how many folks are all for it!

I would dare say that you

I would dare say that you don't know the definition of socialism. Now, go do some research on the subject and stop listening to Beck, Hannity, and Limbaugh.

The problem with most of

The problem with most of those who want 'equality' is that they want everything that us working folk have but they dont want to work for it, they just want to have the government take it from us and give it to them. America needs to get back to what it used to be...you want it, YOU work for it, no more handouts.

As for unions, they had their time and place but now they are just a money grab. Why do you think school budgets are out of control?

OldHeathen, you are delusional. The wealthiest 10% in this country pay 70% of the taxes while the poorest 47% pay nothing at all (thats ALMOST HALF). Sure, Buffet's tax rate may end up lower than his secretary but his taxes paid are higher. What you want is called Socialism, they have that in Europe, guess what, they are all in worse shape than the US.

Billionaires and Corperations

Some oil companies are paying NOTHING in tax, Billionaires like Warren Buffet pay less in tax then their secretaries do, just ask him!

During the American high point, post WW2 to the 1970s the top tax rate ( before deductions) was 90%, houses and cars were much more affordable because the working people had more unions, the top wage earners had their incomes held down, and the working poor were lifted up. This worked great, and the middle class was born, Middle class is created, it does not naturally exist because income tends to gather at the top without regulation, thus, what has been happening since Reaganism has been to shift income from the poor and middle class to the rich! And then they pay less tax then a middle class person does!!! Anyone who has lived 50 years can see it!!

The question now is, what kind of country are we going to be? Do we want more of the same? Or do we want equality? Do we want work to pay a living wage?

These huge Corporations have no allegiance to any country, and the tax dollars from the soda you buy, to the Federal income withholding, go to encourage our jobs to be off shored!! Is this something working people want? How is that mc job working for you? If your lucky enough to have one!!!

What a maroon

I thought you libs gave up the old lies as they were shot down, and came up with new ones. If so, someone needs to let the oldheathen know that. The Warren Buffet line is tired, and retired. When the gasbag Buffet made this statement he knew he was lying, and somehow you still believe it. Buffet was trying to compare apples to to oranges between his secretary and himself, using her income against his. Her income is purely income from wages and taxed as such. Buffet's is mostly dividends and capital gains, taxed totally different than wages. He hires tax attorneys by the company full to avoid paying any other taxes and this myrmidon holds him up as an example to us poor slobs, beat down by the corporate man. take the tax shelters away so

take the tax shelters away so that billionaires instead of getting refunds pay their fair share! families of 4 earning 50 grand pay no taxes SAY WHAT only if they have a house that is frankly beyond their means or are facing very high medical bills, then there are the Bums who's rank are growing everyday because they are learning it is better to be on the system than tring to support the system. what they fail to say is to live in the days of Truman it required 1 working member to support the household of 4 in the 1960's it began to change to 2 working to live in the same style today it requires 2 working and 1 working 2 jobs, why is that? Taxes not the ones you see everyday but those hidden that FAR FAR EXCEED THOSE OF TUMANS ERA!!! Property taxes,Payroll Taxes,Cigarette taxes, Gas Taxes, Unemployment taxes, permit taxes and fees, sale taxes, death taxes, the list goes on and on taxes on equipment a company owns is taxed yearly and many other parts of industry are taxed as well and those taxes are borne by us when we buy their product So the idea that we are less taxed than in trumans day IS NOTHING BUT A POLITICAL HOG WASH STATEMENT!!! WHO CAME UP WITH THAT ONE THE RNC OR THE DNC OR BOTH THIS BS IS WHAT I WOULD EXPECT FROM A POLITICIAN!! ANd to the city of Lewiston if I have to pay 50 cents more for every thousand dollars then those earning more that 70 thousand should be cut by 50 cents for every thousand over the 70 grand and THEY WOULD STILL BE OVER PAID!! lets start a ref. to limit pay to 70 grand for all city employees!!!!
