Public help sought in double homicide

RUMFORD — State and Rumford police
appealed to the public Tuesday for help identifying and
finding the young man they say gunned down two Rumford men in their
Pine Street home at about 9:45 p.m. Monday.

State police detectives were getting warrants Tuesday morning to begin searching the small house, center, at 244 Pine St. in Rumford, where two men were killed late Monday night.

Victor Reed Sheldon, 22, and Roger
Leroy Day Jr., 48, were found shot to death in their living room at
244 Pine St., shortly before a 911 call about gunfire in
the house, said Maine State Police Detective Lt. Brian
McDonough.

Although people at the scene Monday
night said the two men were shot in the head, McDonough declined to
reveal the nature of the men's injuries. He also declined to say how
many bullets were fired, or whether police had recovered the weapon
involved, or its caliber.

By 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, search warrants were
obtained from Rumford District Court to enter the house and vehicles
parked in the yard to gather evidence. A judge ordered the
warrants impounded to shield them from the public, a court official
said.

“We are seeking the public's help in
locating an individual seen fleeing from the scene immediately
following the shootings,” McDonough said at a 2 p.m. news
conference at Pine Street and Oxford Avenue near the scene of the
killings.

The shooter was described as white, in
his 20s, about 6 feet tall, with a medium build and dark,
shoulder-length hair. He was wearing dark clothing, the
detective said.

“And, he had these — they've been
described as either bandages or almost like gloves you'd wear riding
a bicycle, with the fingers free,” on both hands, McDonough said.

“Please keep in mind that he may have
changed his appearance following the incident,” he said.

People with information are asked to call Maine State
Police at 657-3030 or Rumford police at 364-4551.

McDonough said one of the state's key
witnesses in the case was actually inside the dark-blue, single-story
house at the time of the killings. He declined to identify the witness, other than
to say that the man, who was an associate of the victims, was not
hurt.

“There's a good chance the assailant
wouldn't have known the third person was in the residence, because he
was in a different location in the residence; although, he may have
known,” McDonough said.

With a killer at large, McDonough
said, residents should “be smart about yourself and on your guard.”

Day lived at the house, which is owned by Anthony Scott Richards, 34. Richards was
extradited to Helena, Mont., in mid-April to face federal sex
charges. Richards bought the house in
July 2003 for $24,000, according to county records.

Sheldon stayed at the house
frequently with Day, according to state police. Sheldon, who was arrested on July 6 by
Mexico police and charged with domestic violence assault, was
scheduled to be arraigned in Rumford District Court on Tuesday
morning. However, sometime Monday, the charge against him was
dropped.

McDonough declined to say whether
Monday night's killings were related to domestic violence or
the federal sex crimes case against Richards.

“But, I don't think we're ready to
rule anything out at this point,” McDonough said. “It's really
too soon to tell." He said police were aware of the FBI
case against Richards, but hadn't made a connection to it.

“I think we're bouncing around some
theories that we have some confidence would be applicable — without
going into specifics — but, obviously, we're looking at all
angles,” he said.

Rumford police Chief Stacy Carter said
at the news conference that his officers had received no recent
complaint about Day or Sheldon.

“This is our first homicide in a
number of years, so it is upsetting to community members,” Carter
said. “This isn't something that is typical of these communities,
Rumford and Mexico.”

John McCaffrey, 20, of 151½ Oxford
Ave., said Tuesday he was stunned by
the violence. Richards' house, and another he
owns at 244½ Pine St., are directly behind McCaffrey's home.

“This isn't 'Law and Order,'" McCaffrey said. "This is
Rumford, Maine.”

McCaffrey said he didn't know Day, but he
knew Sheldon. They went to elementary school together in Rumford.

“I saw these (victims) recently in
the neighborhood out walking around and they've been shot dead now,”
McCaffrey said. “I moved here two winters ago and
it's usually a quiet neighborhood,” McCaffrey said. “The most you
ever hear is somebody burning their tires on the street. I never
would have expected a gunfight to break out.”

Day and Sheldon "played the most unlikely music
from their house — pop songs by the artist Pink — that you
wouldn't expect to hear blaring from their house," McCaffrey said. "They were strange folks, but being
strange doesn't get you shot. I hope they find the
guy who did this.”

First off.. The rumford

First off.. The rumford police are always out. I'm not sure where you're looking, andy1957, but they ARE around. There's more than one cop on duty (not including the person answering calls), in Rumford, and the cops do more than patrol the streets, they need to go inside and write paperwork, bring people in and talk with them. Then, theres someone there answering calls.. of course some will be inside. Being a cop isn't just patrolling. If they arrest or pull over someone they need to document it. Unlike other towns/cities, they have to do that themselves. I think they do a pretty good job (maybe too good) at patrolling. Also, the Mcaffrey person you're talking about is 20! I'm sure he knows music. He wasn't saying anything bad about them. A 22 yr old tough guy (or so you state yourself, andy) and a man in his late 40's do not often listen to pop songs. But to each their own! another thing.. your 2nd issue isn't even relevent since it happened in mexico. or maybe I'm not understanding that fully?
Either way, it's sad and scary that this happened.
And I agree, the sketch looks like his brother... or any other man with long hair. haha

Why does the story say it is

Why does the story say it is a single-story house? I lived in this house years ago and it is NOT single story. The bathroom and 2 bedrooms are upstairs. There is a livingroom, dining room, and kitchen on the bottom floor. It also has a basement.

I wonder if the person who

I wonder if the person who did this was looking for the owner of the home? He isn't very well liked after what he has done with the child porn on the internet. Just a thought.

Hakim, I disagree with you

Hakim, I disagree with you on who has a right to take a human life. not even the govt's of the world have that right. that's not what our nations military force is all about. While I am a firm believer in the death penitently it is not a god given right for any human to take another humans life. I also doubt this will be come a cold case. It may take the state police a few weeks to fully investigate the double murder, but there is a reason for that. When it comes to the Maine state police department they like to be very through and make certian they have all there bases covered. I'm sure once that process every thing through the DNA lab they will find the killer.

Ah, Hakim, it was a

Ah, Hakim, it was a Republican administration/legislature that eliminated the death penalty in Maine. You might want to do some research on the subject.

T, So since the death

T,
So since the death penalty was repealed in Maine sometime around 1887 with a Republican Gov...and I haven't been able to find the controlling party of the legislature back then so is this the timeframe you are referring to? Where did you find the political make-up of the Maine legislature ob the late 1880's? The reason I'm asking is because I always do the research and if you have a better source than i can find...I'd like to see it. By the way, the death penalty was repealed because a prisoner who was being executed by hanging suffered from a poorly tied noose. Also there have been a total of 21 people executed in the history of Maine. Now here is a question I would like to ask you...what do you think is the recidivism rate for these 21 executed prisoners? Well that I can answer...zero.

Andy...you're an idiot. I

Andy...you're an idiot. I was very interested in everything you were saying until you started bashing the cops. You talk like someone who's been on the wrong side of the law once or twice. For your information, in a homicide investigation the State Police are always called in. They have people who have the training to be able to do the investigation properly. Most city and county officers do not. But what bugs me the most about your post is the way you talk trash about Sheldon in one sentence and then say how sorry you are in the next. Kind of hypocritical don't you think? I know the Rumford area fairly well, and for those of you who keep saying what a nice neighborhood this is, you're kidding yourselves. I'm sure it was years ago....but over time the scumbags and the drug dealers and users have been moving in, and the nice families have been moving out, and quite frankly I'm surprised it's taken this long for something like this to happen.
With that said I'd like to add how sorry I am that this happened......whatever your lifestyle, or your choice of residence, nobody deserves to have their life snuffed out in such a violent manner, and nobody's family should have to go through this. My thoughts and paryers are with everyone.

Rita, I was not bashing them

Rita, I was not bashing them I have facts to back up my statement's seven years ago I was assaulted in my home in Rumford. I filed a complaint with Rumford PD. When the cops arrived on the scene I was arrested for defending my self and my home against my attackers. no weapons were involved. last fall I was assaulted in front of my home here in Mexico. I again called the cops, the officer showed up took pictures of my face and the open wound over my left eye then insisted I go to the hospital to have it looked at and told me he would be along with the paper work for me to fill out for the complaint. He then drove to the home of the person that assaulted me. picked him up and drove him to the bus station and put him on a bus to PA. no complaint was filed because I never got the paper work for it and when I called to get the paper work all I was told was the investigating officer would be in touch. So, yes Rita I can honestly say I'm speaking from experience.
And yes I have been on both side of the law I've done my time for my crimes I know first hand what Rumford PD is like now. 25 to 30 years ago things were different they did there jobs and they did them well. they made people want to live in the Rumford / Mexico area. They made people feel safe. The new cops they have on the street you can't find after ten o'clock at night. and if you go down to the station there is a note on the station's locked door stating that if you need an officer you can call one of two numbers. Mexico is the same way as well. and the funny thing about all of it is. the officers on patrol are inside there cars are in front of the station, not out doing the job they are hired to do.
Take a drive around town some night see for your self.
As for my comments about Victor Sheldon? Those are all from memory. I know the family personally I've known them for about seven or so years. The family has its share of problem. hell read the article.
"Sheldon, who was arrested on July 6 by Mexico police and charged with domestic violence assault."
You think that was the first time he had been arrested? I know of two other times as well. Victor, Chris, and Penny Sheldon have all been in my home at one time or another, and I have been in there homes as well. They know that what I said about Victor was from what I remember and was not met in anything more then my memories of him. Honestly I liked Victor. I understood him a little bit because I've been where he was. When ever he and I met we would always talk for a few minutes.

Rita before you jump on someone and call them an "idiot" make sure you have all the facts.

My bet is that they will

My bet is that they will solve this one!
My condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

Andy1957's picture

My condolences go out to

My condolences go out to both the Day and Sheldon families.
While i didn't know Roger Day. I can say that I did know Victor Sheldon. Victor could be a handful when he wanted to be. Making friends as fast enemies every where he went. He was one of those kind of people you either liked or didn't like. not a very tall person in fact I think is ex wife was taller then he was. But if you ruffled his feather he would come at you with every thing he had and try to make you think he was the biggest and baddest dawg on the block.
It's sad to find that this has happened to him, based on what I've read to this point Victor was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I remember telling Victor the last time I spoke to him to be careful one day he would bite off more then he could chew. But that was always the way Victor seem to like doing thing.
Mr. McCaffrey stated that, " Day and Sheldon "played the most unlikely music from their house — pop songs by the artist Pink — that you wouldn't expect to hear blaring from their house."
To that I say this. Mr. McCaffrey check the music your children and there friends are listing to. don't be surprised to find Pink in there selection or ICP or Eminem.
I can remember Pine Street 30 years ago and while it true Rumford and Mexico were different then. families lived in most of the home on that street and most of them back then work in the mill on the other side of the hill. But like everything else things change and so do people.
When I first met the Sheldon they lived there on Pine street not to far from the place where the shooting took place. In fact almost across the street. Victor was no angle by any means but he didn't deserve to be shot either. Although I'm sure there are many who have dealt with him in the past that may have had that thought in mind once or twice. no body I know would have ever followed through, it was always a lot of talk in the heat of the moment.
I've read the information on this case in the sun journal and watched the video's and it's refreshing to see that the state police are stepping in on this shooting. As we all who live in the Rumford Mexico area know how our local police departments tend to muck things up and sweep them under the carpet and try to pretend it didn't happen.
After watching the recent video at the top of the screen. and seeing the police sketch then seeing Victors brother Chris in the same Video. I wonder if the police artist was looking at Chris while creating that image. Put a scruffy beard on that image and you have Victors brother Chris. Not a very good likeness of the shooter your looking for Chief Carter. I've seen 5 year old's that can draw better then that.
The State police will do there job as always in this matter I'm sure of that and they will find the person responsible for the shooting. The shoot who ever it is might as well turn them selves in. See the state police have this new method they call DNA processing. if the shooter stepped in to the building they will find him. They will bring the person to justice and we the tax payers will have to support his sorry ass for the rest of his natural life.
Well that's my opinion anyway.
Penny, Chris, and Dale. my condolences to you, Victor did not deserve this and I hope you get your justice and find away to move on when things settle back down again.
