LEWISTON — An unseasonably hot night, no dormitory air conditioning and end-of-the-year excitement created the conditions for a Wednesday morning clash between Bates College students and police.
Students insist police made matters worse by overreacting to a rowdy but happy late-night gathering.
"I actually laughed at the fact that they labeled this a riot," said Bates freshman Ethan Brooks-McDonald. "It did get kind of rowdy, but everyone was cheerful. It was pretty tame. Nowhere near what I'd call a riot."
Brooks-McDonald was one of the more than 200 students gathered on the street in front of Smith Hall on Wednesday morning in a celebration that ended when state, county and four local police departments responded. They arrested 11 students and charged them with disorderly conduct, failure to disperse and refusing to submit to arrest.
Students said it didn't have to turn out like that.
Tuesday night they were celebrating "Throwback Night," an annual celebration in which seniors visit their first-year dorms one last time, usually providing beer to the freshmen living there.
The dorm doesn't have air conditioning and the rooms were hot and stifling in the early morning. Students said the celebration moved outdoors.
"I understand police not wanting 200 to 300 people just standing around drinking," Brooks-McDonald said. "But it was unbearably hot inside and the students were peaceful."
Freshman Eric Devaux, a Smith Hall resident, agreed that the heat led the students outside. Devaux said he was outside but went back into the dorm when police arrived. He disputed reports that the crowd was unruly and wouldn't make room for an ambulance that had arrived to treat a Bates student.
"Nobody was being belligerent," Devaux said. "They got out of the way for that ambulance. But there were a lot of people, and I don't think security felt like they could handle it and that's when things changed."
Freshman Dan Lowenstein said police arrived and began telling students to disperse, arresting students when they didn't move quickly enough.
Students claim police used night sticks and Mace or pepper spray. Sophomore Ronnie Ead said he watched police tackle and handcuff a student in front of the Dana Chemistry Building, 200 feet from Smith Hall.
"He made a gesture like, 'What are you doing here?' and the police told him to move along," Ead said. "When he turned to go, another one ran up and grabbed him and tried to push him to the ground."
Ead said students began chanting "F--- the police."
The incident was all students were talking about Wednesday, before, during and after classes. Student Joe Musso created a Facebook page, helped organize an afternoon rally in front of Hathorne Hall and initiated a petition drive.
More than 100 students attended the rally. Lauren Christianson said local police regularly overreact to Bates students, especially on campus.
"We think of the campus as our home, after all," she said. "We are just people, celebrating on our campus, so this feels like an invasion of our home."
Christianson said local police have targeted students, breaking up campus parties and harassing students walking at night.
"To some people, we're just walking money bags and they target us," she said.

Funny posters
It's funny reading all these posts from non-Batesies.
1. I think it's funny how involved you all think you are. Reading all these articles, but not really understanding what actually happened.
No ambulance was blocked for more than 10 seconds
The police officer tripped in an attempt to tackle...
Bates College is the shining star of Lewiston Maine. Every weekend I'll have people outside my dorm taking pictures on the college's pond. People even get married at our chapel. "Daddy's money" helps support over 1000 locals and even more stores.
Students here are some of the friendliest people, who go out of their way to volunteer.
2. Posts wishing bad upon Batesies is nothing more than envy. but the reality is were not all made of money. Our parents work hard for it and we work hard at the college.

I can't say that I've read all the comments on this thread, but on the ones I have read, I am amazed at the level of anger displayed.
I view Bates College as a valuable asset to the L/A area. They don't pay taxes. But they certainly employ many people that do. Over the years, I've enjoyed attending many of the events offered. Just last week, went to a wonderful puppet show with my daughter. The Bates Students were extremely friendly and fun to be around. I also had the opportunity to participate in a leadership workshop at Bates lead by Jim Carigan years ago, along with 30 other participants. Many of those participants have gone on to start organizations like L/A Trails. I'm sure there are many more examples of how Bates has benefitted the L/A Area.
Regarding this latest event. I wasn't there, so I don't know, but based upon the reporting, there seems to be errors in judgement in both sides.
I've been to several events in various places, and later read newspaper reports and wondered if we had been at the same place.
If nothing else, I hope both "sides" attempt to reconcile this incident, and work on a plan to improve matters in the future. Don't let a few bad apples on both sides (students and police) ruin things for the rest of the community. There's a lot of potential for good.

No one is comfortable with people breaking laws. Whether they are Bates students or not. No one is calling for violence..."Grow up, and get over your temper tantrum!" These Bates students are being treated like every other law breaker in the state. When you are arrested, your name goes in the paper. You go to court and you receive your just desserts. I'll bet none of these children thought about the consequences to their actions...well, it's not to late to apologize. They can start by apologizing to Bates college for shaming them...student and faculty alike. They could apologize to the Lewiston Police Department and send get well cards to the officers that were injured. They can apologize to the emergency personnel that arrived to help two of their fellow students. Then they can apologize to all law enforcement agencies that had to respond to the chao's these children incited. Last but not least the can apologize to the tax payers of this community, and to their parents. Yes an apology goes a long way. I am surprised you were not taught this as toddlers. Then again....

Perhaps some of these students should consult Maine law definitions for riot, obstructing government administration, disorderly conduct, refusing to submit to arrest, failure to disperse, etc. They would then understand that once they engaged in such behaviors their "party" was over and the police were doing the exact job they are paid to do which is to enforce laws. Police are allowed to use force to make arrests and are trained to use a level of force to make those arrests, if the level of force was high then it's likely that the level of force to resist arrest was also high. If the police used excessive force then I'm sure that the numerous dash mounted patrol cameras and cell phone videos that were undoubtedly used by students will show that and if that is the case then I'll be the first to say appropriate disciplinary action should and must be taken, to include termination of those that used excessive force. But from what I see in the paper this is typical of similar college aged students engaged in this type of conduct, they aren't happy their fun was over and thought their large crowd should dictate the course of events, they were wrong and now they do what college students do best, shift blame, protest, sign petitions, and stomp their feet

Might want to re-think that rant. Commanding other people to stop posting and start a forum somewhere else because you don't like their comments is a great example of arrogance and intolerance, not to mention control issues. You have the option of restricting your reading to your own Bates forum on campus where you can trade identical views with your peers. Might be a good idea to stop visiting public websites if the comments upset you so much.
By the way, there is no aisle. This isn't Congress. In the real world outside college, from the smallest local business to the largest multinational corporation, you as a working member of society will have to listen to EVERYONE, not only the people you deem intelligent. That's how the world works. You may not think all your colleagues and contacts are intelligent, but not all of them will think you are intelligent either. Remember that.
It is logical to deduce that this incident never would have occurred if Bates students hadn't initiated it through their behavior. Whatever happened afterward, the primary catalyst was not the local police forces. Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and admit you screwed up. Learn and move on.

Too much mercy... often resulted in further crimes which were fatal to innocent victims who need not have been victims if justice had been put first and mercy second. He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it. There's a simple way to solve the crime problem: obey the law; punish those who do not.
Propoganda? I believe that if you want to see propaganda...you attend the Batesie rally. Propaganda? After listening to Mr. Chiampa's interview, I had to put a cold wash cloth across my forehead and call for smelling salts. That was the worst display of acting I have ever seen in my life. :) What a drama queen. I do believe he was smiling in his mug shot...yet he claims he was brutally beaten. He wants us to know he was beaten with a police baton, over and over and over again. Yet does not show us the bruises to the back of his legs. He had a few scraps and bruises...yet in every photo this boy is smiling and laughing. The pictures say it all. Mr. Chiamia acted like a difiant child. The police asked them to leave, they broke the law when they failed to do so. Did the police do their jobs? Absolutely!

Obviously one or two photographs is all it takes to convince people like you that they know exactly what went down, that they saw it with their own eyes. Why don't you just find somewhere else to proselytize and leave this between the people involved: Bates students and the police.

Too much...now your blaming the photographers! If I would have been in hand cuffs, being placed under arrest...I certainly would NOT have struck a pose! If I would have just seen my friends and school chums/chumps being arrested I would have left. A person like me, would not have stopped to pose. Those that continued to be defiant...were absolutely juvenile. People like me, have enough common sense to disperse when a police officer asks you too. A person like me...does not block the way for emergency personnel to get through to help those in need. Those like me...have better things to do on a hot sultry night...other than getting obliviated, and breaking the law. Mr. Chiampa was his own worse enemy. He made a case against himself, with that foolish grin of his! In case you forget "periodshyphensu", what happens in our cities...makes it everyones business. That is why they publish it in the news. And btw...tax dollars pay for our police department...our taxes, our votes, and our abiding the laws of this city and state makes it our business....so what happens to our police officers or because of them, really, really makes it our business. :) What went down, was Batesies violating Maine laws. Well-educated yet devoid of wisdom ...
If I am breaking the law our society demands that the police enforce. If I resist their efforts they are expected to do what is needed to make me obey the law.
We have all seen terrible videos of police abuse. The police obviously used care and restraint in not going to tasers or other more severe tools. Abused people do not flash proud smiles for the camera.
Wisdom would be shown if the Bates community and students drafted an open letter to the city and civil servants for acting so childishly. If you had respected your own campus security force and dispersed when asked, none of this would have happened.

Well it was a hot night, huh? No AC in the dorms either. Wow. That sounds inhumane. No wonder these poor students had to move their party outside. Bates College is abusive for not giving these people the bare minimums of their rights by providing them with AC would have prevented all of this. Students should rally about that. But wait ... AC is not ECO-friendly, is it? (Sarcasm intended.)
And, it's a friendly celebration at the end of the year. What's the big deal? In fact, I think I'll invite a couple hundred people over tonight to drink and party and celebrate graduates everywhere. It's going to be hot so we'll be outside. Underage? No problem, come and party with us. We'll kick holes in walls and litter the grounds and if the police try to get us to obey Maine law we will join in friendly, harmless chants of "**** the police." Darn police ... they just don't like us. They should just stay and party with us.
You are adults, Batesies. You are not "kids." We expect you to obey the law. When you do not, we expect that our law enforcement agencies will fully enforce the laws we have passed through our governmental systems.
Last word of advice, wipe the grin off your face when you get arrested and have a mugshot taken. The cameras will come for a couple days and let you tell your story of how misunderstood and abused you are, but none of that footage will matter in 10 years when you want to run for office and your opponents bring out your mugshot. It's serious. But then again, I bet you started to realize that when you sobered up and started working on your stories.

Its embarrassing that you can be so judgmental about what you hear only from the media. Do you have any idea of how it actually happened? No, you only comment on the situation according to how the media plays it. Police responded aggressively to a outdoor party, abusing power and throwing fuel onto a mild-tempered party. The ambulance had come and gone well before the police arrived, and the statement that students had "blocked the ambulance" was merely an excuse for the excessive force used on students.
Why don't you quit making over-arching comments about Bates as an institution and its negative effects on Lewiston, just because of what the media says about the incident. You have no idea what really happened. Why don't you worry about how the druggies are effecting your community than how a few college students are stealing your tax dollars. Grow up.

I'm not sure we could have said it clearer, so I'll say it again. Nobody on this campus believes we should not accept responsibility for our actions. Of course, "our" is a general term since out of the 300 or so people claimed to have been assembled, only 11 were targeted for arrest by the police. Regardless, nobody here is arguing Bates students were out of line.
That does not and never will give the police a blanket right to use force against any Bates student they manage to get their hands on. On top of this, I'm sure as statements are made and facts come out, we'll see that most of the 11 arrested surely should have been arrested, but I think we'll see that some of their actions should not have earned the violence perpetrated on them by the police. What happened to the officer's leg was a tragedy, and Bates students will gladly admit responsibility if it turns out that it was our fault. This isn't about us shifting the blame, or "spinning" it on anybody. It's about making clear that there were incidents of excessive violence by the police. Is everybody on this forum to narrow minded that perhaps there were TWO WRONGS? If you think we're acting like shameless children because we want to hide behind finger-pointing, look at yourselves. You refuse to acknowledge the police could have done anything wrong. There are certain situations that require you to be responsible for your actions. There are also certain situations which require you to question authority. This is one of those rare ones where both are required of us. We were there, we saw what happened, and we're not going to keep quiet about it until it's acknowledged. Leave all your other petty grievances at the door. I don't see many Batesies bringing up every last reason we dislike Townies.

trust me, you come across as ignorant about how things work in the real world and you certainly lack life experience (though not entirely your fault, you just dont have the years under your belt yet), someday, maybe you will inderstand but clearly right now, you do not.
as for the reason for the public lashback that you see,did you happen to watch the news last night? the 'highly intelligent' Bates students they interviewed came across as a bunch of whiners, blaming everyone else for what happened. It's not media spin, its words out of their own mouths.
Now, reality, I understand that this was a small portion of Bates students who were involved in this but to date, I havent seen much outcry over the actions of the students from bates students/alum, and that is disturbing to me. Seriously, take a step back and put yourself in that cop's shoes, faced with a drunken mob at least some of whom were chanting F---the cops. ok, now you've told ths mob to disperse and they refuse so you try to arrest them and they resist so you have to use a little muscle to get compliance....meanwhile, you still have no idea if this mob is going to turn on you. I've been on the mob side of this and the only reason it turned out differently is that the mob made a better choice and did as told. I understand that the police are not always perfect but in this case, it seems clear that some force was necessary. "Arithmetic on the Frontier" - Rudyard Kipling
A great and glorious thing it is
To learn, for seven years or so,
The Lord knows what of that and this,
Ere reckoned fit to face the foe--
The flying bullet down the Pass,
That whistles clear: "All flesh is grass."
Three hundred pounds per annum spent
On making brain and body meeter
For all the murderous intent
Comprised in "villainous saltpetre!"
And after--ask the Yusufzaies
What comes of all our 'ologies.
A scrimmage in a Border Station--
A canter down some dark defile--
Two thousand pounds of education
Drops to a ten-rupee jezail--
The Crammer's boast, the Squadron's pride,
Shot like a rabbit in a ride!
No proposition Euclid wrote,
No formulae the text-books know,
Will turn the bullet from your coat,
Or ward the tulwar's downward blow
Strike hard who cares--shoot straight who can--
The odds are on the cheaper man.
One sword-knot stolen from the camp
Will pay for all the school expenses
Of any Kurrum Valley scamp
Who knows no word of moods and tenses,
But, being blessed with perfect sight,
Picks off our messmates left and right.
With home-bred hordes the hillsides teem,
The troop-ships bring us one by one,
At vast expense of time and steam,
To slay Afridis where they run.
The "captives of our bow and spear"
Are cheap--alas! as we are dear.

Here's an idea for Bates students: cut the elitist attitude and accept responsibility for your actions. You broke several laws and should consider yourselves lucky that the police were very lenient, they could easily (and justly) have arrested far more than they did and charged them with several more things.
I think the people of Lewiston ought to write an open letter to the President of Bates in protest of the elitist attitude that these students have and to let her know that their behavior is UNACCEPTABLE to local residents. When the Police have to call in backup from surrounding towns to assist, the situation is obviously far more out of control than these college students would have you believe. The Lewiston Police department has enough issues to deal with already without having people who should know better adding to their calls. Bates claims to be a top tier institution with high academic standards but the actions of its students tell me that they are no better and no smarter than the students attending any number of state funded schools and they behave much worse than the students at these supposed 'lesser' institutions.
In the end, these students should graduate, show up at court, accept responsibility for their actions and plead guilty and then move on with their lives bussing tables and serving coffee because that is about all their $200k liberal arts education is worth these days.

I went to college. Yes there is underage drinking occurring on campus. Is it legal?? NEVER. Especially if you are on someone else's property, open to the public view.
But it's ok, because we were the one's drinking, we were the one's forced out of our dorms by hot temps, we were the one's getting out of control, we were the one's that Campus Security couldn't handle and needed to call in the local Police to assist. What' that?? City, County, and State Police showed up?? Hey, Let's chant 'EFF the Po-LEECE', they wont care.
Ok, the sarcasm has ended!! KUDOS to all Police Departments involved. It's not easy dealing with the snooty group you dealt with that night. I bet some are pre-law thinking they know the laws.................AND I AM NOT generalizing all of Bates Students, just the 100-150 that remained all entitled and snooty. I don't mind Bates. I grew up not a mile from Campus and would challenge student joggers to a little basketball once in a while.

easy, the things they think the police did wrong are...incorrect. The police reacted to their actions. Had they not acted stupidly, they would not have been arrested. It's not like the cops were camped out waiting for this to happen, they were called to the scene. Outnumbered, 10:1 by a crowd chanting F--- the police could get ugly fast, resist arrest, force will be used (I know, I know, in their tiny little minds, no one is allowed to use force against them).
And the context of the letter, the way I read it, was that it was all the cops fault. thats how it came across to me and I've read it several times hoping to see something different but I dont.
oh, and their claimed 'right' to record the proceedings is a huge fail, once the cops order you to disperse, your only legal move is to leave the area, period. if you want to record it, do so from another location, if you stay, you are subject to arrest.

to bates1996grad, I was struck by your use of the words "perspective" and "interaction" or "interacted with the community" It seems to be a two words that have gotten more meaning than they deserve. Since you were not there, you couldn't gain more perspective. Obviously what has been reported in this paper was initially limited, now the story is unfolding. Since we are using these words, ok. My perspective is from the Hospital Emergency rooms from 1977 to present. I also lived on COLLEGE St for five years. The changes in the behavior of Bates students over that time has been dramatic. And not good. So, its a longitudinal observation. I also have the perspective of having grown up with and been surrounded by.....Bates Grads. A range of Grads from 1919 (believe it or not) to 1977. And, I worked with LPD for many many years.
When you use the word "interacted", it implies separation from the community (Lewiston/Auburn) that you were a part of as a Bates student. And, no, I had not implied that you were anything. Not a corporate Titan or anything else. Bates has separated itself institutionally from the communities than ever before. Sorry to be so pedantic about word usage, but there it is.
It is ironic, at least to me, that Bates Grads, who literally changed history, grew up in L/A. Like you, I am sad for Bates.

Not sure about the point of your response, though it's difficult for me to imagine myself being separated from the "working class" since I am a part of it. I'm not the Wall Street banker or corporate titan that you are likely imagining. I live paycheck to paycheck. So it's not clear to me how I've tried to separate myself from any class, working or otherwise.
Re: your question as to the whereabouts of the "good Bates students"... they clearly were a) not at this debacle on Wednesday morning b) there and dispersed when they were told to or c) at least have had the good sense to avoid yesterday's student gathering and not sling insults at police officers or members of the Lewiston community.

Just one comment about students and former students claiming that if they do damage, they pay for it. First of all that's not entirely true, since damage done beyond the dorms is not necessarily traceable to any particular dorm or student or group of students. In that case the college has to eat the cost, which they are of course free to pass along in tuition hikes.
Leaving that aside, the core of the problem, and the most disturbing point, is this: students seem to think that merely coughing up money to pay for damages absolves them of all responsibility for having behaved like common criminals. Paying a fine is a laughable consequence for this indefensible behavior. Fines are soon paid, soon forgotten, and apparently painless, since the behavior continues each year.
If the college required the students to repair all damage themselves (particularly during the hot summer, in buildings with no A/C, remember?) they might think twice before smashing in a wall or breaking a window. When a moment's worth of immature fun smashing something turns into hours of labor, it doesn't seem like so much fun anymore. And they'd soon be complaining that it's no fun to pick up bottles, broken glass, and cans around the grounds. Being tasked with personally cleaning up their own messes instead of simply throwing money at them and walking away would contribute more to their higher education than many classes they've taken.

I rationalized that responsiblity not age should be the factor for the responsiblities that we are given. These kids did not show that they could act responsible, but I was sick of coming on here and seeing "The college should be fined for every kid who drinks underage." These remarks just made me upset that this has become all about money and drinking. They didnt get arrested for drinking, but for not dispersing. Leave the underaged drinking out of the conversation; it was alcohol and the age of the students that caused the issue.

Dear Bates Grad1996, even by your own words, even now, you separate yourself from the "working" class. I KNOW LPD, and the "bad cops" (if there are any) don't stay employed at LPD very long. And...where are the "good Bates students?" why aren't they saying anything? I think elitism fostered at Bates spilled onto the streets this week. Although most ED and emergency personnel will tell you it's been dribbling out for a long time. Bates has come a long way from an institution founded to train ministers of the gospel. So....I see very smart kids with absolutely no character. If they had character, they would go to LPD, hats in hand, and apologize for being stupid. At the very LEAST, they could go and apologize for their part in it.
Instead, by virtue of their superior intellects, are developing "spin" to cover their own shame. Sound familiar?
In case you are wondering? Whether I am working class or the unbelievably lucky professional. My grandmother is a Bates Grad, my Grandfather is a Bates Grad, my mother is a Bates Grad, I have a brother who is a Bates grad. Bates has an international reputation for the quality of the education received, it used to be "for the benefit of our human community." They used to promote character, now it seems to promote malignant narcissism. Not a good day for Bates

I'm a younger part of the 'older generation' and while I feel this story is being blown out of proportion, in part becasue it makes good news copy, it points out a fundamental flaw in today's youth.
The phrase "It's not my fault" is a staple for most anyone age 10-30 these days. Accountability is a thing of the past; blaming others is the trend of the present. I see this on a daily basis and it's frightening.
The 'real facts' have little relevance here. These students were in the wrong and the entire thing could have been avoided. If the students had left when originally asked, this would be a non-story. What followed thereafter is moot.
One other thing: I am new to Lewiston and admit that it is not the most thriving city in Maine. Bates College seems out of place - it's kind of like sticking Miss America smack-dab in the middle of the female contestants on The Biggest Loser.
But from my perspective, Bates feels like its own little world - the connection to the community is marginal at best. So, the students who see Lewiston as a 'pit' and complain about it should live by the addage: "If you are not a part of the solution, then you're part of the problem."
I think for some of them, their affluence gets in their way. But then again, that's 'not their fault.'

Rather than being resentful that some of these kids come from well off families why don't you stick to the facts, laws were broken and the police may have gotten a little out of hand. Neither side is innocent, but neither should be a shock to anyone either. A lot of you would apparently be surprised to find out that many Bates students are actually not "rich kids", and attending based upon their grades, grants and financial aide. I sure hope they don't lump all Lewiston residents into one stereotype, like many Lewiston residents have done with them. I for one would hate to be included in that lot!

I graduated very proudly from Bates College 14 years ago today. Reading about what has happened on campus over the past 36 hours disappoints me tremendously. I would hope that both the school and the city of Lewiston would be featured in news stories for reasons other than this.
I was not there on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and therefore I don't think I (or anyone else in here that wasn't there in person) should jump in and say who is to blame. Once a story like this ends up being debated in a forum such as this, all perspective is lost. All that I can do is give the perspective of a Bates grad, now in his late 30's, who remembers his Bates years fondly but has the perspective of adulthood to lean on when reading these stories:
1) Bates is like many college campuses. Students can be immature, unruly, destructive and obnoxious. The same students can be mature, respectful, helpful and kind. Lumping all Bates students into the "spoiled brats" category is inaccurate.
2) Lewiston residents are like the residents of any city - hard-working, proud, and decent people. While I was at school, my friends and I interacted with countless members of the Lewiston community - we bought goods in your stores, saw you on the street and even shot pool with you at The Cage on Thursday nights. I never had an incident with anyone from Lewiston. Never thought about it, really. The people I met just seemed like your average working person trying to live their life. To use a phrase like "townie" or to call Lewiston "a dump" serves no purpose in here.
3) Police officers - there are good cops and there are bad cops. For every cop that rescues a child, there's the cop that beat a suspect. But 99% of cops are just men and women doing their job to support themselves and their family. Just as with Bates students and Lewiston residents, it's not right to generalize.
4) My friends and I certainly drank too much in college. We caused minor dorm damage (and paid for it). We abused our freedom at times and relished the protected environment and comfort that a college campus often provides. But even my group of friends knew when to say when and where certain boundaries were.
5) 100 students showed up for the rally. This hardly seems like there was raging sentiment against the police by the entire campus. If 150 students remained and witnessed what happened, less than that amount showed up for the rally... doesn't sound like this galvanized the student body (just in my opinion).
Graduation is this weekend at Bates. I'm not sure who is at fault for what happened this week, but things are very different once you walk off of a college campus. Bates grads are headed all over the country to start their professional lives as adults and need to understand that things change dramatically once you leave school.

I agree with you, the rally didn't have the turnout that the organizers wanted, but I don't think that's a reflection on the student's passion about the issue. I really believe that there wasn't enough time to really organize anything bigger. Not many people heard about the face book group, and I only heard overhearing others talk about it by chance. I think if they had waited, even a day, the turnout results would have been exponentially better. It's all anyone is talking about on campus right now. Staff members, Faculty, Students, Parents, Alumni, everyone is really upset, by student behavior, police involvement, and the venomous reaction from the community. It's a really sad situation all around.

Are they not all adults? Can't they all be arrested and charged? I feel that voting and Killing/dieing in the army are to things that take more responsibility then drinking alcohol. I know that it is against the law, but it is a law that creates a situation where at the institutions like college where something as abstract as age determines that someone is responsible enough to imbibe while others are not. What about all the 45 year old drunks that have to go to AA? These kids drink on the weekend and work hard all week, while the man or women with a family that they need to provide for is stoned drunk every night. Which is more offensive? These kids know there is a time to drink and it is Friday and Saturday nights ON campus. I also have it from a reliable source that the ambulance made it through because the party inside was broken up. My friends at security had to call the cops because the crowd was to big out front; not because people could not receive medical care. Sun Journal did a good job at making that part abstract to fuel the banter in these discussion boards. I am sure that these kids were calm, the police arrested a few people to make a point the make the rest move, and then things got out of hand when people saw their friends being arrested for no reason. I do not fault the cops or the kids. It was a #!#$%y situation. People on these forums need to relax. You are all out for blood. Stop being so bitter. It is not as if the mob went into Lewiston and vandalized stuff like the youth that lives in Lewiston now. Moreover, the cop who broke his leg, I sympathize with him, but it is not as if the kid stopped on his leg. The officer fell down while arresting the kid and his body broke his leg; another point SJ leaves out to make it seem that the kid broke the officer’s leg with a bat. Look deeper into the news. There are two sides to each story, and no offense to the SJ, but they are not the NY times.

These Bates students need to "man up" and take responsibility for their actions. They had choices. They chose to do the wrong things i.e. providing alcohol for underage friends, refusing to allow an ambulance access, totally disrespecting the police, and creating a fracas. They knew what the outcome would be, so they should face their punishment and not whine like spoiled babies. Why aren't these kids either working to pay part of their tuition, studying, or volunteering their time to help those in need? That would give them less time to be hot and bored. If they need a cause to get fired up about, how about learning respect for the public servants that are paid to protect their sorry butts or helping to solve some of the country's IMPORTANT problems? Why did the SJ downplay the officer who broke his leg? I'm sure he didn't just slip on a beer bottle. If that was done by a student he should be charged with assault. The parents of kids everywhere need to teach them RESPECT. If your child chooses to do wrong, teach them to OWN IT, not make excuses. These students are blaming everyone but themselves. Next, I'm sure it will be the school's fault. No air conditioners after all.... WAAAH

Who the heck blocks "Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics"??? If a student had died that night, because of your childishness...you Batesies would be singing another tune. Bates college should be held accountable. These boys and girls, "YES, I said boys and girls"..apparently need someone to hold their hand. It goes to show that you can pay approximately $51,300 a year to send your child to Bates college...and they graduate, being nothing more than educated idiots! I am angry that more charges were not brought against these "Buffoons"! (1 : a ludicrous figure : clown
2 : a gross and usually ill-educated or stupid person). I would hope the DA would investigate, and arrest those that supplied the liquor to these children.
Compared to other schools, Bates has a relatively relaxed drinking policy. Drinking is permitted in dorms, provided they aren’t chem-free. If security catches someone drinking outside, they’ll ask the student to pour his or her drink out and then let the student go. Several years ago, most forms of drinking were allowed on campus, but a series of alcohol-related hospitalizations caused the school to re-evaluate its drinking policy. Now, hard alcohol is prohibited (even to students who are of age), and people caught breaking this rule can be given strikes. Students who have three strikes are brought before the Disciplinary Committee. Unregistered kegs are also against the rules, and if a party with an unregistered keg is broken up, the person responsible for the party will get a strike, and everyone else will be sent home.
The original reason for Bates’ lenient alcohol policy was the belief that college students are going to drink no matter what the school does to stop them. The College wanted to discourage surreptitious drinking and ensure that students who have had too much to drink would not be afraid to go to Health Services if needed. Bates decided to change this policy in an attempt to curb the alarming number of hospitalizations due to alcohol poisoning. Security has recently started cracking down on beer pong games in the hallways, but this is more to comply with fire codes than for any other reason. Even now, Bates is far less strict than other colleges, at least in regards to alcohol. In other ways, Bates can be fairly strict. Rooms are checked over breaks, and students who forget to hide their illegal appliances or cable-stealing wires and boxes can get in trouble. Bates is also very strict about parking—illegally parked cars are nearly always ticketed, and sometimes even towed. ( Well how about towing the idiots that blocked emergency personnel from doing there jobs? )

Only Brats would call this brutality. Without Daddy's money these kids would be so lost in the real world.
1) EMTs were not allowed to enter a building to render aid to someone in need
2) Bates Security called Lewiston Police. My guess is they were unsuccessful at handling the situation. I'm not blaming them, 300 drunks is a lot to handle
I say send Bates a bill for the cost including the officers' medical and recrupitive time. I sincerley doubt any of these kids receive substantial punishment from the school. These kids don't have a clue about the real world.
I'd prefer the property tax revenue from Bates than the "community involvement" from Bates any day. So a bill from the 5 police departments to the school seems to be reasonble. Plus any cost to defend the cops against any gratuitous allegations.

Bates doesn't pay property taxes; none of those brats pay taxes in this town,so the taxpayers pay for cops, and ambulances because it's too hot for these spoiled brats to illegally drink and use the word "actually " in every sentence outside. Bates gets 50,000$ per student a year, pays no property taxes. The strip of Central ave that runs through the campus to russell st, is in such bad repair that many people that had physical challenges walking in the M D walkathon had trouble making it down that short street. Bates doesn't pay property taxes, do you think bates would just pay to pave that little stretch, especially since Bates construction, and Bates traffic mostly ripped it up; one of their whining brats could turn an ankle, and Daddy will sue... Oh no, Bates will wait till the Lewiston taxpayers foot the bill to repair that road.

Would you rather bates not be there? That way you could put up a bunch of houses in that spaced and take away about 1,000 jobs bates creates. You are a moron. Every college in the country is tax exempt. The reason Lewiston is a dump is not because Bates is based there. Grow up. Go look at Brunswick. They don't complain about Bowdoin being there.

The bottom line is drinking on Bates’ campus created this situation not the cops. The person or persons that bought the booze should be charged for providing it to underage students. Two of the eleven students charged are from in state. I wonder what the percentage is of in-state students at Bates. I am tired of catering to people from away who come here and break our laws while drinking and then claim they were doing nothing wrong. These students will never work in Maine or return for any substantial period of time to help our economy save hiring locals to work as servants in their summer homes. Meanwhile Maine taxpayers will be expected to cover the cost of the infrastructure these people use to run rampant and complain about being called on it later. It was a hot night and things happen on hot nights but the bill for this, no matter who was at fault, will eventually fall on the shoulders of the Lewiston and Maine taxpayers, not the students or administrators of Bates. Suck it in and accept the fact that you were doing something illegal in the first place, either allowing underage people to drink or drinking underage yourself.

Sounds like you've got a chip on your shoulder there Bilgerat. It's a shame, too. Underage drinking is a problem at ALL colleges in the U.S. As for Maine tax payers' dollars-- I think you should worry less about the odd incident at Bates and more of the chronic drug abuse of Lewiston residents and the dependency syndrome of some of the numerous parasites on welfare

Hmmm, could this be immaturity, failure to comprehend simple instruction? Disobediance? Primitive behavior? Self-centeredness?
The Throwback is a satirical novel written by Tom Sharpe in 1978. "The protagonist's illegitimate grandson combines sexual and educational innocence with an alarming propensity for violence."

Two Points.
1. The conferment of a degree is on a contractual basis between the school and the student. If the student fulfills all of the requirments for the degree program, then they are entitled to the degree.
2. If conviction of a crime renders that student ineligible to graduate - you must remember that no one has been convicted here, only charged. But I seriously doubt any misdemeanor charges would ever make one ineligible for their degree.
In 1966 when George W. Bush was a 20 year old student at Yale, he was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct when he and some friend stole a Christmas wreath - the charges were later dropped.

Good comment - the only thing I would add is that, while the College is required to confer the degree (i.e., "give the diploma") to the student who has fulfilled all the requirements, they can ban someone from marching during the Commencement ceremony as a disciplinary action. In this case, the degree will still officially be conferred during Commencement, but the student will receive the diploma via mail.

OK solet me get this straight, first the college wants more help from the Lewiston Police Department because of the tragic stabbing death of a Bates student. Now students are complaining the LPD harasses students and is always around...what absolute rediculous childish behavior these kids displayed. I agree with an earlier post about welcome to the real world. If this is how they want to act...the next "room mate" they have will be a 300lbs cellmate named Bubba who may take a shine to their new playmate...Grow up take responsibility for your actions and realize the world isn't an altruistic perfect place and if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time...even if you think you didn't do anything wrong...you could be caught up in it. This was nothing more than a mob mentallity and the police were called in.

Some of these yahoos blocked the ambulance that was sent to provide medical care to students who needed it and some people think the police are in the wrong? What is wrong with this picture? Having worked for years in the ER, frequently taking care of drunk college students, I know that theyare often verbally abusive, obnoxious, belligerant and sometimes violent. I have been hit by an intoxicated college student and yet there does not seem to be a system in place for these idiots to be punished unless charged. Even that does not seem to teach them a lesson. The colleges don't seem to punish this behavior. Although I am sure that the majority of the students that night were not being disruptive, it doesn't take but a few for things to get out of hand. If one of the students that had needed medical attention had died, everyone would be blaming the police for not being proactive enough to make sure that the student got the care needed. Frankly, I think the students got off easy.

You're absolutely right in saying the colleges don't punish this behavior. Then again, why would they? To do so would affect their "Development" office - a.k.a. donations to the college(s). Do you seriously think a parent of a student will give more money to the college if the college actually reprimands the student? This day, age & seemingly dominant social perspective (i.e. - everyone being politically correct)- I HIGHLY doubt that would ever happen.

Cranky Yankee, that's quite a list you've got there. How do references to child abuse and stealing from others even find their way into your response? The point is that before the police arrived there was simply a group of friends hanging out. The police handled the situation very poorly. Perhaps this is due to improper training or simply being overly excitable. That said, the crowd could have been peacefully and uneventfully dispersed had proper tactics been employed. Oh and Cranky, how many shootings have you heard of in Lewiston? How many of those are attributed to gun wielding Bates students?!
It is however, lamentable that the cop broke his leg. Hopefully, it will spur his superiors to implement proper training for police officers to prevent such a re-occurrence.

Lose the elitist attitude and understand that when the police order you to leave, failure to do so is an arrestable offense. Perhaps the Bates students in question would have acted properly had their parents instilled them with the understanding that ones actions have consequences, maybe the parents of said students will take the opportunity to revise their parenting skills to prevent such a re-occurence with any younger siblings these holier than thou Bates students may have.

What's the draw? I mean, really? I've watched these drunken fools (both when I was in school and these very fools that we are speaking of here) lose all control and do things that they could not take back in the light of day. There were plenty of opportunities to have a good time "back in the day" and, contrary to popular belief, I did not have to drink myself stupid to enjoy myself, or the company of my friends. I would hope that there are students just like me at Bates today.
