Alison Fereshetian crossed the finish line and punched the air.

As she slowed from her sprint over 10 hurdles, she couldn't decide whether to cover her face with both hands, or continue celebrating with those fist pumps, so she did both, eventually hopping to a stop in her father's arms against the fence at the end of the front stretch of the track at Windham High School.

"I'm a hurdler because my dad helped me, so I was so excited to see him there after that race," Fereshetian said. "I've been hurdling since I was 10, and he's always been my coach in the event."

The top seed in the 100-meter hurdles all season, Fereshetian capped those expectations with a brilliant run in Saturday's state final, blazing the track in a time of 14.72 seconds to earn her first of two individual titles of the afternoon, and in state-record time.

"I never expected to set a record, not even close," Fereshetian said. "I didn't even know I had done that until two seconds before they announced us on the podium. That was awesome."

Fereshetian, a Leavitt Area High School senior, began the day as the top seed in two events, and second in another. After her record-breaking performance in the 100 hurdles, she didn't appear to have much left in the tank in the 300 hurdles, and after leading for nearly the entire race, slipped back to second over the final hurdle as Olivia Thurston of Waterville finished first.

"Honestly, I don't think I was prepared mentally for that race," Fereshetian said. "And I think my workouts this week for that race kicked my butt. But hey, it's still second place."

In her third individual race, she atoned, racing out to an early lead in the fast heat and hanging on to upend Amanda Peterson of Gray-New Gloucester in the 200-meter dash.

"I really didn't expect this one, not at all," Fereshetian said. "I knew (down the home stretch) that she was there, and I knew I had to find that extra gear."

Peterson, meanwhile, just a sophomore, capped a solid day of her own after a fourth-place finish in the 100 and that second-place finish in the 200.

"It wasn't what I expected in the 100, but it was definitely more than I expected in the 200," Peterson said, "so I guess it evens out. It usually does."

Poland's Kendra Lobley also had a solid day on the girls' side. The middle-distance specialist captured fifth place in the 400, and then sped out to a win in the 800, improving her seed by two places.

"I wasn't really sure about the 800," Lobley said. "We'd talked about having a strategy for this race, and it felt different than the other ones, but it worked out. I didn't want to start out too fast, so I tried to stay behind the runners at first."

Fereshetian's top performances, in addition to her help in the 1,600-meter relay in the last event, helped Leavitt earn seventh place in the team competition.

Waterville, the overwhelming favorite coming in, was never challenged. With 168 points, the Purple Panthers won the girls' meet by 74 points over York.

Poland, thanks in large part to Lobley, placed fifth, while Gray-New Gloucester tied for 10th.

In the boys' Class B meet, Poland's jumping ace Matt York, in his final meet with the team, placed second in both the high jump and the long jump. He took one jump in the triple before passing, due to a nagging knee problem.

In the high jump, he finished with the same height as winner Tanner Storey of Greely, but lost out on the top spot on jumps.

"It's kind of fitting," York said, "I did the same thing to him last week. Honestly, I felt like I jumped well, that happens sometimes."

York's teammate Cam Woodford also had a solid day. The junior thrower placed third in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

"I still wish I could have thrown better," Woodford said. "But I have another year. "I'm just happy for Matt that he did well today, as a senior."

In the boys' competition, Falmouth earned the meet victory with 104 points, with Greely in second with 76½.

Woodford and York led Poland to a ninth-place finish, Gray-New Gloucester finished in 18th, and Leavitt came in at No. 20.
